Is "Saiyan" the correct spelling?

Discussion regarding the entirety of the franchise in a general (meta) sense, including such aspects as: production, trends, merchandise, fan culture, and more.

The way I look at it

Saiya-Jin = people of Saiya (even though they live on Planet Vegeta)

Saiyan = American, Canadian, African, ect.

SSj_Rambo wrote:So in Japan is there any commonly used abbreviation for Super Saiya-jin? Because I know that they abbreviate a lot of other titles and something as long and as detailed to write out as "Super Saiya-jin" seems like something they would abbreviate.
As far as I know there is no abbreviation. The only other way I've seen it written is スーパーサイヤ人 (writing out "super" with katakana instead of kanji) which is actually longer. There are times when they use English (well, roman or whatever) letters to abbreviate things, like using "DB" to write dragonball/s, so SSJ as an abbreviation for Super Saiyan wouldn't be too odd, I've just never seen it used.

I pronounce it "sy (or sigh)-an. Who else does? I believe that's the 'correct' way to say it in English.
Just Saiyan...

Was the name of the planet ever given before the Saiyans took it over? 'Cause if it wasn't, then it could've been Planet Saiya and the old name persisted even after the Saiyans renamed their world.

Wasn't it Plant back when the Tsufuru-jin lived on it?

Wasn't 'Saiya' a pun on the word for plant?

So I guess there is no simple answer to this question.

I was just cofused, and I wanted to do it correctly when I typed out my reviews (like the ones in my site) and such, as to not look like someone who doesn't know anything.

But thank you for going to the time and effort to help me, everybody.

I suppose I will spell it as "Saiyan," rather than "Saiya-jin" like I have been doing. I suppose it would be a lot more simple for people who are only familiar with the English dub.

And I apologise for posting this twice. I couldn't find it when I logged on, and I thought that I may not have posted it properly.

Saiya is Yasai mixed up. Yasai means vegetable.

Yes, the planet was named Plant before the Saiya-jins landed on it. When the planet was won by the Saiya-jins the Vegeta we know's father (King Vegeta) had the planet named after him, and then named his son (Prince Vegeta) after the planet.

So Planet Vegeta's name had no influence on the name of the race. It is possible, however, that the planet that the Saiya-jins lived on before they came to Planet Plant was named Saiya or something. If not that, then it is possible that the Saiya-jins lived on a different planet before they got to the planet that they left for Planet Plant, and that planet might have been named Saiya or something. And they could have lived on a planet before that one, and before that one, and before that one and so on.

Pretty much we have no idea how many planets the Siaya-jins have called their home-world or which planet they originated on or if any of their planets were called Saiya or Sai or anything like that. All that we do know is that they call themselves the Saiya-jins from the time we first see them onward.
