Should Viz Media release Dragon Ball SD and Super Dragon Ball Heroes?

Post by TheRed259 » Mon Jan 05, 2026 4:38 pm

Do you think something like this would be successful?

Should Viz Media release these two series in manga format or not?

Personally, I would buy them if they ever started to come out.

Bizarro world in which we get anything and everything we want with no repercussions or realistic considerations? Sure; go nuts.

Real life? It's infinitely more important that the rest of Akira Toriyama's actual works be released in English before any of the spin-off stuff. It's great that we finally got Manga Theater so we're a long ways to being "complete"... but we still don't have Kajika or Neko Majin, and Katsura Akira is also sitting right there (and already half-licensed by Viz!).

That said, if I were in charge of the licensing department, I don't know that I would bother with SD or (any of) the (various) Heroes manga. We can barely get American fans to read the actual fucking Dragon Ball manga (nevermind Dr. Slump), so a somewhat-funny-chibi-retelling (which also skips entire story arcs) is basically a non-starter. Heroes miiiiiiight find itself a market, but I can also see a backlash to Nagayama's art, and at this point we're already a couple years removed from Heroes even being the primary product in Japan (we've moved on to Divers), so we're double-removed from the marketing machine that actually drove that manga in the first place.

Honestly I'd rather:
  • We (Viz) start over with a complete retranslation and deluxe hardcover Dragon Ball manga release; and
  • Japan collect the manga series they never did (Victory Mission, Fusions, Discross), put out a fourth ____piece Theater of Toriyama's uncollected works
...and then maybe we can talk more about the other ancillary stuff after all that.

Yes, although I'm biased because I'm a collector.
Do you have any info about international non-English broadcasts about the Dragon Ball anime or manga translations/editions? Please message me. Researching for a future book with Dragon Ball scholar Derek Padula

Super Dragon Ball Heroes exist as a way to promote a video game. A game is not released in the states.

The Super Dragon Ball Heroes manga has been released in Italy, Germany and Spain where the game has never been released there either.

Have to second this. More pressing than getting Teen Dragon Ball Go and Yu-Gi-Dragon Ball Marvel : the manga promo, I’d rather get a retranslation of the manga that stays consistent in its naming conventions and doesn’t have weird localization choices like Piccolo’s brief Shakespeare phase and “Hey Bro Whazzuup” and more importantly isn’t done by a fucking chomo

Come to think of it I wonder why Dragon Ball SD hasn't been released in English yet. I get that it's a weird spinoff thing but they released That Time I Got Reincarnated as Yamcha. Although maybe that's just lower risk cause it's only 1 volume. A similarly weird concept for a different anime, Attack on Titan High School got released in America too, although that's not Viz.

They probably just don't think it's something worth spending the time/money translating when they could use those resources on more profitable full series. They've been slowly making their way through translating Jojo's Bizarre Adventure for like 10 years now.

I'd love a Neko Majin translation. And speaking of Toriyama's other works, I'd love a Cowa anime but specifically if it's done in like a 2D crayon/watercolor style instead of 3D.

Also seconded (thirded? lol) the idea of a revamped deluxe Dragon Ball manga release. The Vizbigs are pretty close to something like a Kanzenban but they still have some flaws. Like for some reason not all of the color pages are in color.
