Dragon Ball is the only anime/manga franchise that can pull off such a thing, and I'm glad they're finally doing it. I really hope we can get one of these every 2-3 years.
Pokemon? You can argue it’s been primarily a video game franchise first since around 2002 but things like Ash finally winning a tournament (Sun and Moon) or being dropped after 25 years as a protagonist still get media attention.

I don’t particularly care for either but don’t One Piece and Demon Slayer turn up some pretty decent cash worldwide in the box office?

Shonen Jump in general* is kind of Japan’s Marvel at this point.

*And yes I am aware Pokemon isn’t a Shonen Jump IP
Yeah, you're right, I guess saying Dragon Ball was the only one was incorrect, but I still think it can do it best though.

Well, I'm glad they're not doing a DBS remake because this means I can binge Super (manga and anime) in its entirety because I've never exactly done that before. I own all of the Super anime, but I still need to watch it and read the whole manga (I pretty much know what happens in both though).

Globally speaking, Dragon Ball seems to be bigger than One Piece, despite how absolutely massive the latter is in its home country.

We still have one announcement, so it could still happen. Considering One Piece is getting a movie and seasonal anime this year, and Moro is getting adapted next year, what else could it be ? I doubt we're getting a new Dragon Ball movie with all that in production.

One Piece is big in the States too. I’m not plugged into the One Piece fandom to know how it’s perceived globally. As far as I know it’s not a second religion in Mexico like Dragon Ball or anything but it’s definitely not “Only big in Japan” ala Anpanman

I have zero skin in the game in defending One Piece but that thing is undeniably a juggernaut. It’s every bit as mainstream as Dragon Ball

One Piece’s popularity in the states has been picking in the years since the 4kids dub ended, but I don’t know if it’s on the level of stuff like Dragon Ball and Naruto over here.

Chainsaw Man The Movir: Reze Arc has made $125 million at the box office and the latest Demon Slayer movie made $779 million, so...yeah. a movie would hit hard, if people gave a shit about it. I don't think that Dragon Ball has the zeitgeist for that kind of money, though.

I would say that Dragon Ball is more widely known globally than One Piece. In my country, the average person recognizes Goku even if they know nothing about anime or manga.

Like I said I hope that if this is a show it had 65 episodes to have a series that could be enjoyable by binging.

Well, I guess with these announcements, we can finally say the Dragon Ball drought is over (2018-2026/2027?). I know we had Super Hero and Daima, but I don't really count those. They were like breadcrumbs, not a full meal.

It very much (unfortunately) is though. Like it’s pretty much impossible to avoid any general conversation about anime irl or online without One Piece getting brought up. The live action adaptation did numbers on Netflix. The movies at least the Red one made a decent amount of money in the US box office. Globally it and Demon Slayer have outperformed any Dragon Ball movie

I feel like I a lot of people are still stuck on “One Piece didn’t perform well back when 4kids put it a on a channel nobody was watching when I was a kid” as some sort of evidence that it never caught on outside of Japan and that just straight up isn’t true

The Moro arc is the star player of the Manga if not Super in general so I’m excited! And the new game looks interesting too! I’m wondering if it’s some spiritual successor to DB Online and if it’s gonna play like a “souls” game (which I’m not the biggest fan of) but faster paced do to it being DB and what not. Whatever the case is I just hope the gameplay ain’t a clunky mess, I’m so sick of playing DB games where I’m hovering over my opponent, throwing punches and he’s actively getting hit even though he’s under my feet and not in front of my face.
It's not too late. One day, it will be.

By the way, is this the first time Naoki Miyahara has been involved with anything Dragon Ball since the end of GT? He was the director for the 40th Anniversary special video.

Yeah, I think it was successful in Europe because they got the original uncut version, and there was a time when the French and Catalan dubs were almost up to date with the Japanese version.

In the case of that One Piece film, it made less than a third of what Super Hero did at the North American box office.

Huh, that’s an interesting tidbit. I certainly didn’t expect him to be the CGI director for the movie.

20 minutes to go until the next big announcement. What is everyone's expectations ? I think the Super remaster is still possible.

The heavily censored One Piece dub has honestly been long forgotten at this point. I don’t know why people think it had some lasting negative impact on the franchise here. The uncut version has been around for like 20 + years. It may not be as big as Dragon Ball in the States but it’s still huge.

“Anime isn’t mainstream EXCEPT Dragon Ball” is just such a silly take to me.

It would make sense to run a remaster leading up to Galactic Patrol. As a refresher of sorts. Especially if that GP doesn’t start until late 2027 rumor is true

Anime is indeed mainstream and manga has been outselling Marvel and DC comics in the West for years, if not decades. That much is undeniable.
