Dragon Box: The Movies 20th Anniversary

Post by coola » Thu Jun 25, 2026 8:05 pm

Last JPN Dragon Box set was released 20 years ago, April 2006, I myself got one a year later as reward for high school graduation 😀 If i remember correctly, it was first ever official release with clean stereo audio, and to this day it's one of better releases, especially compared to US ones (even on Blu-Ray) https://www.kanzenshuu.com/features/dra ... s-arrives/

Honestly colors were probably better than the Toei BD release lol.

That BD would be really good if they didn't have that rdiculous censorship, the green tint, and the DNR.

It's amazing how some DVDs from 20 years ago are still the best release this anime has ever had.

Seed of Might is by far the best thing to ever happen to the classic era; everything we've gotten in terms of home releases must have some glaring flaw for some reason.

I wish there was Dragon Box 4K UHD.
Movies on those era were shot on 35mm film, so it would look great.
On one hand, the infamous censorship from Bio Broly would still retain, and Toei would likely to put more censorship on newer release.
I just hope Toei would release it uncut on higher quality.
I'm sure there would be demand for it.

I view SOM is to Dragon Ball in much the same fashion as what both Petr Harmy and Team Negative 1 has respectively done with the amazing Despecialized and 4Kxx fan restored versions of the unaltered theatrical/Pre SE editions of the original Star Wars trilogy, namely stepping up where the official companies and license holders fail to deliver. Filling the demand for those wanting to experience the films as they first saw them in their original form in higher quality than has ever been available for the original versions. Seed of Might has effectively done the same in picking up the ball both Toei and FUNimation/CR has dropped over the years across numerous releases.
DB collection related goals as of now:

1.) Find decent priced copy of Dragon Box Z Vol. 4 (Done)

2.) Collect rest of manga

3.) Get rest of Daizenshuu (2-7)

I wonder why they are doing just the movies, instead of the whole uncensored series... maybe it is a marketing strategy. But do they know that most fans don't even care about the movies that much?

Thank you for sharing the pictures from the old box
