Tenkaichi 2 vs Tenkaichi 3

Post by comicstar100 » Tue Jun 23, 2026 4:34 am

Over the year's I've seen so much love for Budokai Tenkaichi 3. But I think Tenkaichi 2 is slept on. You get an actual overworld to fly around and explore similar to Budokai 3. There's so many more fights. Storymode wise I just think it's superior. But Budokai Tenkaichi 3 has the superior roster, storymode is more condensed. What do you think is Budokai Tenkaichi 2 or 3 the superior game?

I used to like the story mode in 2 a lot more, for the obvious reason that it had a LOT more fights. Almost every fight in the franchise. And flying around the world was awesome

But I've come to like the execution of 3 more, at elast when it comes to specific fights, with the mid fight character switches, story moments etc if only it was as long as the second one. A mix of the two would be perfect.

3 also has more costumes, that allow fights to actually look like they did in canon, iirc in 2 there were a few story mode fights with inaccurate costumes.

Gameplay wise I prefer 3, it's just a more improved and polished version of 2

Tenkaichi 2 has the better story, while Tenkaichi 3 is better at everything else (roster, stages, mechanics, etc.).

For me, BT2 all the way. It had a better story mode, a more rewarding feeling when unlocking characters and the international soundtrack had more variety than BT3.

Although I cannot deny that the battles in BT2 didn't get significantly faster than BT1 and the GT cutscenes looked a bit awkward due to the absence of some characters from that series (namely GT Goku and Vegeta.)
A little too late but yeah, I've been officially active in Kanzenshuu for ten years :)

BT2 has always had its fans who consider it the best of the original trilogy. I’m not one of them, but it does have certain features that BT3 removed that I can see why fans were disappointed by. The international release also has probably the best non-Yamamoto score of any Dragon Ball game. Lost Courage is a banger.

I can’t say I agree with the people who prefer the story mode over BT3, though. The BT2 story mode always struck me as very awkward in its presentation. Even the map it gives you to fly around on is pretty shallow compared to the one from Budokai 3.

The BT2 story mode covered more events but was stale in its presentation. The cutscenes were just talking characters with zero expressions, save for a few well animated ones (the ones who got shown in the trailers lol). Flying around the Earth was still cool. BT2 had better music.

BT3 had a lot less story content, with key scenes missing, but the execution was better and more dynamic. Rehashing BT2's story mode would have been boring anyway. At that point I was already thinking "do the VA's get bored of voicing the same lines over and over again?" but they are still doing it 20 years later lol. If "cutscenes" just show people talking, it's clever to combine them with actual fighting and timed ultimate attacks and transformations which are cinematic on their own. Speaking of said cinematics and graphics, they really were a big step beyond those of BT2. A lot of effort was put into creating unique transformation scenes and attack animations. The controls also flowed better than ever, a long way from BT1's stiffness.

BT2 has the better soundtrack by far. It also let's you hide from your opponent at the start of a match, which can be fun. And Goku can form his Spirit Bomb in the sky, like against Frieza. I also appreciate the long and detailed story mode, even if it does get repetitive. It's cool how they really tried to place the movies at appropriate points in the story, even if it didn't make much sense.

BT3 has overall better gameplay and a bigger roster, and the story can be played through much faster if you don't want the commitment of a long story mode.

I'm more of a Budokai fan, but I do have a lot of fondness for both BT2 and 3. It's honestly hard to decide between them. If BT3 had BT2's soundtrack it would be the clear winner.
