Nameks can most definitely eat, piccolo has eaten senzu beans before which is equivalent to 10 days worth of food. Even though it's just a little bean he still had to digest it.

Manga (manga what? the series itself, or the creators?) decide to figure out what makes other manga popular and try to incorporate them into their own. Look at the facts. Naruto characters match up with DBZ ones. Jiriaya and Roshi, Naruto and Goku, Vegeta and Sasuke... I don't want to go on. But One Piece and Naruto used some stuff of (from?) Dragonball Z and GT and DB.

I really wouldn't be surprised if Naruto's eating style is a reference to Goku's since the artist for the Naruto manga has made references to Dragonball before:

Naruto got the hair of a super saiyan like Goku.
Plus Naruto got an orange and blue outfit like Goku.
Naruto nine tailed fox look a lot like Goku Kaio Ken.
Naruto n Saskue relationship is like Goku n Vegeta.
