Not allowing other writers to take Toriyama's ideas and really make plots out of them is ultimately what harmed the series.
This is the biggest issue I have with Daima as well. On one hand, it's clearly the most Toriyama's been involved with Dragon Ball since the original manga, but on the other hand, there were still major plot points that were in desperate need of an expansion. We were told that Gomah's magic was terrifying, but we never saw it; we were told about Arinsu and Glorio's relationship, but we never saw it; then of course everything that had to do with Ssj4. The plot points were there; all they had to to was elaborate on them. The problem is that everyone was so afraid to change or add anything to Toriyama's work during this revival that everything just feels undercooked. I'm not even saying they should've introduced completely new ideas not present in Toriyama's draft, but rather just expand on what was there.
JulieYBM wrote: Tue Sep 15, 2026 12:10 amThis is what happens when you have an undisciplined producer, like Iyoku Akio, trying to create a series that can be marketed as being "the most the original creator has ever contributed to a series!"
What's funny is that DB & Z regularly expanded and changed elements from the original manga back then, and more often than not, the changes improved the story.
Yup, yup, yup.

You gotta treat this shit like, say, Pocket Monsters. The world building notes from Toriyama have to be a used like a bible for other writers to build properly dedicated scripts around and then flesh out. Oh, the overall story is about Pansy, Glorio, Duu and Kuu eventually going from these positions to these positions? That's where you do one-off episodes to build on those ideas without trying to fully copy the notes like they're a checklist. Dragon Ball Super understood this, it's why you can feel a more natural progression and flow between the scenes in each episode.

I'm really curious to see how things pan out for The Galactic Patrol. Hopefully a good series director is brought on and Tomioka and the other Dragon Ball Super writers return and get to continue in the same vein of what they were doing in the Tournament of Power arc.

I always thought Daima was left unchanged, even with its glaring flaws, out of respect for Akira's passing.

In a regular situation, you wouldn’t have two separate introductions to SS4 that step on each other; a character arc as undercooked as Glorio’s, whose relationship with Arinsu is never properly established, making his betrayal carry no real weight and making it obvious from the start that he’ll eventually side with Goku; or a useless and stupid character like Degesu, who makes some of the dumbest decisions a cartoon could possibly make. And then there’s Gomah’s magic, which is literally just like the little Yakuza guy from The Simpsons. How many times can we be shown a gun that’s never fired?

Now, all of this is extremely obvious. The only explanation I can come up with is that they chose to leave the work as close to Toribot's vision as possible.

To me, the 1986 movie is a much better way to experience the beginning of Dragon Ball. The Pilaf Arc being a arc I have great issues with because I think the villains are too silly, and the arc in overall being too centered in comedy, which is something I can understand as Toriyama intended it to be a gag + adventure manga initially, but we all know how that changed as the series progressed, making that first arc feel too distinct from the tone that the series adopted later, and it's something that Toriyama later repeated with Daima, which I also had issues it, so I'm not a fan of that.
Definitely not saying that Dragon Ball should be serious ala the Cell Saga from the beginning, but I think the Pilaf arc emphasizes too much the joke side, which contributes to me preferring the 1986 movie over it, the tone of that movie being much more in align with the rest of the series, it has many comical scenes but it also emphasizes very dramatic and serious moments just like any other story that came later.

The moment where Shenlong is introduced also being much better in my view, as it has the main villain defeated in one of the most unique ways in the entire franchise, with Shenlong being summoned from inside his stomach, and I also prefer the wish that Pansy makes in order to save her village a lot more than the joke wish that Oolong makes to stop Pilaf's plan.

If the series went in a direction with its tone closer to the latter I would have no problem with it, but it did the opposite, which for me is much closer to the tone of the former. So for me it shows how Toei could make a much better beginning for the series than Toriyama himself did, which ended up being a big contrast with the rest of his manga.

The only problems with that movie is that it's only double the length of a episode of the anime, so you can feel how the character introductions are rushed. Also, having no Pilaf Gang, Chichi and Gyumao creates a conflict for the future stories in the series as they become important again later on.

I would've fixed that by having the Pilaf Gang as minor villains before Goku and others face Gurumes' army. Also, have Chichi and Gyumao replace Pansy and her parents. Gurumes would be responsible for the fire in Gyumao's castle, the fire being supernatural in nature would somehow connect to Gurumes' curse which transformed him in a monster and the story of the wizard also being related to that, then in the end Chichi would wish for Shenlong to erase the curse, leading to the fire stopping and Gurumes going back to his normal self.
Then the story closes and proceeds to the 21st Tenkaichi Budokai. (Maybe the only conflict would be Bulma, Puaru, Oolong and Yamcha already being aware of Goku transforming into a Oozaru)

This + giving more time for the characters to be introduced would've been perfect in my view. I would also replace Kuririn and Lunch's introductions with Sleeping Princess in Devil's Castle, only because I think the whole adventure on Devil's hand was really cool, but that whole thing can be seen as filler, also, Bulma and others returning for that adventure creates conflict with the idea of Goku not seeing them again prior to the tournament.

I think the 1996 movie is a much better take on the beginning as well, but it borrows too many Red Ribbon arc characters and elements, leading to some kind of fusion between Pilaf and RR arcs, so I pick the 1986 movie for its original characters and having more space for Chichi and Pilaf to not be left out from the story. But both movies have much more interesting stories than what Toriyama came up with in those first 22 chapters of his manga in my view, the only loss being Oozaru.

Resurrection F, the Champa arc, and the Zamasu arc all had the issue of everything feeling very bare bones; this isn't something that started with Daima. The Champa tournament for example felt very underwhelming compared to the tournaments we got in OG DB, while Resurrection F felt more like a rough first draft than an actual script. There was practically nothing going on besides everyone going back and forth between timelines in the Zamasu arc. Daima feels more like a complete story than these three ever did, but that's only because Toriyama was more hands on with it than those other stories, not because the staff decided to take things into their own hands and make improvements where needed.

Say what you will about those movie arcs, but Toei added things, changed things, and replaced things. For better or worse, they took some liberties. They saw things that didn't work and tried to address them (some were improvements, some were not). In Daima, they just left every bad decision in place.

And I'm not sure what OG DB or DBS have to do with my point, since I didn't bring either of them up. I'm not arguing that Daima is the first Dragon Ball story to have these problems or that the other arcs were better written. My point is that Daima seems to have been left unusually untouched despite some very obvious problems. Given how short it was, I don't think it should have gotten away with so many bad decisions when a few tweaks could have made the show so much better.

The only things they adding to Super was filler-like padding for the run time; they didn't make any substantial changes to Toriyama's scripts there either. The Champa arc for example was 14 episodes in Super 1.0, but in the remaster it'll be between 6-7; that shows that their changes were not of much value. Daima, despite its flaws, has the most substance out of any arc in this revival, with maybe the Moro arc being the exception to this.

It's kind of hard to tell what's-what when we don't actually have Toriyama's original outline for the Champa arc. Having rewatched the first episode recently, it's not immediately apparent what could have been added or not. What is apparent is that the episode at least has a flow and feels naturally paced in how it divulges its information.

We also don't know if the Dragon Ball Super: Beerus arc version is actually going to be good or not. It's absolutely possible to do it well in only five or six episodes worth of time but that doesn't mean that this specific case is going to be like that.

The biggest problem I had with the anime version first arc is the last 4 episodes are horribly paced. We did not need that stupid pinball thing or the fight with the guard dogs and Oozaru Goku seems to take forever. Sleeping Princess’s pseudo remake of that bit was much shorter and to the point. Also most of the anime added stuff with the Pilaf gang throughout the arc felt intrusive and killed momentum. Episode 3 in particular all the Pilaf stuff was ugggh get back to the perverted sennin giving the monkey king his flying cloud goddamnit. It’s always been my least favorite arc of the series adapted from Toriyama’s manga. It’s not the best of Toriyama’s work but the manga is significantly better because the faster pacing works better with the comedy.

I do agree Curse of the Blood Rubies is a better way to watch that arc. To the point if it just had the time to include Gyumao, Chi Chi, and Oozaru Goku it would have absolutely replaced the first 13 for me. Shame Toei didn’t think to use Chi Chi in place of Pansy and Gyumao in the Gurumes role. Especially since Toei seemed to be sold on the idea of Chi Chi being Goku’s girlfriend before Toriyama brought her back 4 years after introducing her.

Path to Power will always be a GT movie to me. Yes it’s a remake/adaptation of the Shen Long and Red Ribbon arc but it has GT’s art style, Goku wearing his GT gi for most of the movie, GT’s composer and it’s music being recycled into GT, GT’s opening as the ending theme and GT’s original head writer wrote the script. The movie might as well have been called Dragon Ball GT: Goku’s Beginnings.

I think the problem is the unavoidable “This is the third fucking time we saw this story” is going to be hard to like or care about these six episodes. It’s all going to feel like killing time until the Galactic Patrol arc.

Battle of Gods is probably one of the most well liked Dragon Ball movies not named Super Broly so a “less shitty version of the tv series remake” probably won’t get any praise beyond “it’s better than what we got in 2015
but not as good as what we got in 2013 now get to the new stuff already”

I still fail to see what the DBS filler episodes have to do with what I was saying about Daima. I never said Super made better changes, or that Daima has less substance.
My point was specifically that Daima seems to have been left unusually untouched despite some very obvious problems. How much filler Super had, or how long its arcs were, has nothing to do with that.

What does 'filler' even mean, though? Stories that Toriyama didn't write loose outlines for? Why are those bad?

I'm not sure I understand this mentality. Bare with me if the following handful of paragraphs feels like I'm spinning my wheels as I try to make my point lmao

Good is going to be good and bad is going to be bad regardless of why this project exists, because all commercial art exists for the same ultimate reason. We can all just skip watching this if it's that laborous a process to engage with it. Personally-speaking, other than watching Episode #28 of the 2015 series the other week, I haven't watched the Champa arc since it first aired a decade ago, nor have I read the comic since it first came out whenever ago. Which brings me to the point of: Am I also not going into this Dragon Ball Super: Beerus project knowing that it is going to be a mostly re-edited series using animation from a decade ago and the likelihood that the series qualifies overall as a good television series is not high? Yeah, I definitely am aware of these things. I'm bracing for this entire series to not be well-made. I'm still going to watch it because I think it's a curious project and I want to know how it gets pulled off.

That brings me to another question: At the end of the day, who is the Dragon Ball Super: Beerus project actually being made for? Kids—and their parents—who did not watch the original broadcast a decade ago or who haven't touched the series in a decade and want to get ready to watch Dragon Ball Super: The Galactic Patrol. It's not being made for us, ostensibly grown adults with ostensibly high standards for art. Admittedly, I'm speaking for myself more so than anyone else in that regard, since it's easier to just frame this as being a Me Thing lol.

Like, what I'm trying to get at is the community's general "this is the [x] time that they've done this" just feels like saying the sky is blue. Like, yeah, okay? Why do we need to keep repeating this, it's not really the issue at hand and certainly isn't something that isn't immediately apparent or something being done against us like a form of 'violence inflicted upon us'. Can we not just...move along to the next point of discussion?

It's one thing to repeatedly discuss That Thing We Like. There's nothing annoying about that. What's annoying is that we need to point out this being the 69,420th time that Resurrection of Lightbulbfuckgods is being told. Yeah, okay, I get it. What's next on the agenda for today's meeting of the minds?

I know this is extremely petty, but I always hated that word because of the negative connotations to it. Then again, maybe I'm biased, as I enjoy most of the original Toei content.

I like a lot of those original episodes, too. Colonel Silver spending a few episodes being the baddest bitch in town? Literally only let down by adapting his defeat in the comic as-is without changing it to better suit the sheer truckload of aura he had early on.

Or that episode with the Phantom Saiyans slaughtering the Earthlings as they trained for the arrival of Vegeta and Nappa? Absolutely loved it. I wish it had been referenced afterwards for a full-circle effect.

Then there's Dragon Ball Super (2015), where not only are there outright fully original episodes, but there's also the fact that the storytelling within the arcs that adapted Toriyama's outlines still had their own flourishes to make those arcs function like proper stories because there weren't having to match a comic panel-for-panel.

Anime-original storylines and character beats are neither inherently good or bad, the problem is when the production crew tries too hard to stick to Toriyama's original comic, his outlines, or his style of writing. Putting everything on the back of one inconsistent writer who doesn't even know all of the mediums he is writing for does not work.

My point is it really doesn’t matter if it’s “good” or not. This is still going to be the third time we’ve seen a story told right the first time. Yes everyone and their mother has made this point but until it airs what else is there to talk about? And if there’s anything worth talking about when it airs other than “the animation is really nice” I’m heading to the casino. It’s going to be better than the Super tv series arc but probably not as good as the movie is pretty much a foregone conclusion. This isn’t like Daima where we had a wait and see to see if it was good or not and it just turned out to be really boring.

That's what I'm confused about, though. I don't get the transition from me saying "we don't know if it's going to be good" to "it's going to be the xth time this has been told and therefore it's hard to care." I feel like there's some degree of caring going on here if we're all talking about it. I, myself, personally certainly hope that I'm wrong about thinking that this series is going to turn out to be, overall, bad. Adding in new lines of dialogue and new story beats, even if they don't look amazing, can certainly help with the flow issues that I expect there to be from not fully re-animating the series from scratch.

The number of times a storyline gets told is ultimately irrevelant so long as it's good. Who is refusing to watch something regardless of quality but instead because it's a trillionth retelling of a story? You're more likely to find someone not watching something for reasons other than that. There's plenty of other things to talk about than just the fact that this is Battle of Gods 43-and-a-half again. Or heck, there's nothing to discuss at all. I made this post because I felt like there was more to gain from pulling the lens back and thinking about the broader scope of what was going on. Things are too in-flux right now to just be speaking definitively on anything, which, as an optimist, I think is something to look forward to.

I think you might be the first person I can think of who don't like Z 1st OP and ED.
Then I'll be your second. Cha-La Head Cha-La is a very overused song and so I don't like it anymore. Sometimes you really have to be careful with your nostalgia drug, too much of it will be bad, and we're at that point with that song. Can't stand it anymore.

I'll be joining the club; I'm neutral on Z's first ending and believe its first opening is very overrated. Don't get me wrong, It's not that I dislike it, but is it good enough to be the face of Dragon Ball music and be used over and over again ? honestly, no.

I do like Cha-La Head-Cha-La, but I never liked Detekoi Tobikiri Zenkai Power.

Anyway, here's a different unpopular opinion: many people often debate that other warriors should have learnt Kaioh Ken, usually pointing out Piccolo as the best candidate for it, but I actually think Gohan would have been the most logical choice. Think about it, the Kaioh Ken can't be stacked on top of (blond) Super Saiyan forms, and thanks to the elder Kaiohshin we know that Gohan can access a much greater power without the need to trasform (until he transformed again in GT and in Super). Ultimate Gohan with a 10× Kaioh Ken would have been able to defeat Buu. Change my mind.

Beast, however, is a whole different story, I doubt it would play nice with Kaioh Ken, since it's extremely based on rage.

And yes, I do think other warriors should have learnt the Kaioh Ken, including the aforementioned Piccolo and all the earthlings. One has to wonder about the androids, would the Kaioh Ken even be compatible with them? If so, Jiren would have been defeated in like 30 seconds by a Goku - 17 - 18 trio.

I'm also not a huge fan of Chala Head Chala. I loved it as a kid since it was the only opening for years until the Buu arc, and I still enjoy it (it's like the musical face of the franchise), but I prefer other openings now.

I also prefer the latin dub version over the original one, which is part of why I don't really care for it when videogames use it.

Cold take, but Genkai Toppa × Survivor is my favorite Opening song. Having an openly queer vocalist helps, of course, it's also just a really hyped song for an awesome battle arc. You can feel it breaking through its limits!!

Cha La Head Cha La is a song I loved at first but it just went on for too long. I wish the Android and Cell episodes had their own opening songs.
