How come Gohan and the others didn't learn Super Saiyan God?

Discussion, generally of an in-universe nature, regarding any aspect of the franchise (including movies, spin-offs, etc.) such as: techniques, character relationships, internal back-history, its universe, and more.

There's no guarantee that they would be able to absorb the SSJG power like Goku did, it could be temporary for them just like Jack Bz said.

As for training with Goku and/or Vegeta I don't think it was ever said that God ki can be acquired without the contact with divine beings in training. Toppo himself is another example, he only got god ki because he started to train with Belmodo.

Why wouldn't they? They're even bigger super prodigies than Gokuu is. In any case, no reason not to try.

They acquire it through the ritual and master it by training with Gokuu and/or Vegeeta.

Indeed there is no reason for them to not try other than their school consuming their time. But they are nowhere in the same level of experience as Goku, he learned how to absorb that power and that impressed Beerus, so there is the possibility they wouldn't be able to replicate that.

And for training with Goku and Vegeta I simply repeat what I said previously, it was never seen or stated that god ki can be learned through conventinal means without having a divine being teaching. Vegeta only uses god ki after we see him go train with Whis, and Toppo confirmed to Goku that he learned god ki from a Hakaishin.

If mastering God ki takes a lot of spiritual training, meditation and the like, Goten and Trunks might not have the focus to do it. I could easily imagine either of them asking Dad to teach them, and then getting bored and giving up when it doesn't come as easily as Super Saiyan did. Gohan probably simply doesn't have the interest. His high potential means he can keep up when he tries, and Super Hero characterizes him as relying on Goku and Vegeta to deal things as an excuse to NOT try.

Why should Goten and Trunks get new transformations if there aren't going to be storylines written for them?

Like, I love new transformations like any other girl, but I don't really see a point to just giving them a transformation when you don't have a story to tell. Story first, transformation second.

They have weekends, holidays, summer, etc off from school. Being super prodigies, they should be able to replicate that feat.

If they can acquire God ki without a divine being teaching them (through the ritual), no reason they can't train to master it without a divine being teaching them.

Basically what me and Daniel said previously I think is enough for this, they are very unexperienced and we all know how god ki is something much beyond the conventional and being super prodigies doesn't mean anything if they haven't learned the basics about spiritual training that Goku weht through, Vegeta had to start doing it himself. And Gohan's potential is much bigger in comparison, they doesn't have much.
If they can acquire God ki without a divine being teaching them (through the ritual), no reason they can't train to master it without a divine being teaching them.
Doesn't change what I already said, there's the possibility that it's not even possible given how we never saw anyone who went through the ritual master the power without training with a divine being. Goku himself is not even a example for that, he did absorb the power, but the fact it went unnoticed by him shows that he didn't fully master it, as that would only be seen after he started training with Whis, which is when he starts to have full control of it to the point of using god ki in his base form (Beyond God) and transforming into SSJB.
So the way the series shows us still demands training with a divine being regardless if the ritual is used or not.

None of that "spiritual training" is relevant. We don't know how Gokuu even absorbed SSG's power and made it his own; it was plot-induced.

Their potential is never said to be any less than Gohan's. The fact they're much stronger than he was at 7-8 years old with significantly less training suggests their potential is greater.

It wasn't possible for someone to turn SSG without undergoing the ritual, then came Vegeeta.

Whether or not it's possible only comes down to plot.

I think that's a good explanation, also the other route to aquire it which is through Whis' training, they may think it would be too much for Goten and Trunks to handle, and we saw how that training is if we go by the episodes of the anime for example, so Goku amd Vegeta wouldn't like to take the risk.
Problem being that the series is never clear about it.
MasenkoHA wrote: Wed Sep 16, 2026 10:28 am Vegeta learning Super Saiyan God despite that making no fucking sense
I don't see where it makes no sense, the anime specially even shows he was the one who started training with Whis and introduces the concept of acquiring divine powers throughout training with such being.
Goku in the anime didn't have a problem taking Goten to Whis planet for training. Goku was actually happy that Goten wanted to train with Whis. The one who had a problem was Chi Chi and Bulma.

Chi Chi reason for not wanting Goten to train was because there are no bad guys, that is literally it. That is the worst excuse. There was no bad guys in the Saiyan, until they appeared. There was no bad guys in the Android Saga and Buu Saga, that is until they appeared. There was no bad guy in BoG, RoF and Goku Black Saga until they appeared.

Keep in mind Goten and Trunks were able to discover how to transform while fused and unlocked SSJ3 along with hax technique such as the ghost technique and sealing technique. Gotenks is the youngest Saiyan to achieve SSJ3.

Even if the SSG Ritual power is temporary, the one that uses that power would gain some experience using that power. They would know how it feels to use that power. Some experience is better than no experience at all.

Goten wanted to do these things in the anime:

- Fight in RoF, but the others didn't want him to fight
- Fight in Universe 6 vs Universe 7 tournament
- Help Future Trunks by going to the future
- Train by picking up vegetable with Goku and Piccolo
- Spar with Goku
- Train with Vegeta
- Train with Whis by going to his planet
- If Goten knew maybe join the ToP (This is an assumption)

Of course it is relevant, "super prodigy" being what is irrelevant here, because we all know those two and Gohan can't use techniques such as the Kaioken, Genkidama, Shunkan Ido for example. Goku is not a "super prodigy" still he's the only one who could learn and master such tehcniques because he went through highly advanced spiritual training and same applies to Vegeta later who also learned Shunkan Ido and Forced Spirit Fission. Same goes for God Ki which the control is later explored in Whis' teachings and explanations. Being "super prodigies" is purely a conventional aspect of Saiyajin growth, which is what you'll see with Broly, who's massively strong but can't do anything that escapes from the traditional Saiyajin stuff, it's just like the U6 saiyajins too. No matter how much they train, they would still have to learn how to master god ki through Whis or other divine being because 11 years later and Super still has to show us a different method.
Their potential is never said to be any less than Gohan's. The fact they're much stronger than he was at 7-8 years old with significantly less training suggests their potential is greater.
That's a unfair comparison, Gohan learned spirit, ki control, complex techniques and flight in his 4s, that from training with Piccolo and a big part of it being alone. Goten & Trunks still trained prior to awakening SSJ, and they trained with a Gohan and a Vegeta who were like much ahead of Saiyajin Arc Piccolo. And Toriyama explained Goten and Trunks acquiring SSJ so easily as probably being the result of them inheritng more S-cells and Earth's peaceful years.

Learning how to transform while fused is nothing really special given how they already knew how to do it separately, unlocking SSJ3 being simply part of the natural ordinary Saiyajin growth and can unlocked through conventional training, fusion also helping a lot with its big multiplier which might as well exalt their powers. The new techniques also being no big deal as Fusion seems to indeed add some extra techniques that bear no resemblance to anything that the two separate beings can do, Vegetto and Gogeta also having their own unique techniques that Goku and Vegeta are never seen replicating. So I don't think the things them or Gotenks did are a big deal.

He was never taught them. None of those techniques have anything to do with God Ki, anyway.

They didn't train much, and they turned Super Saiyan before starting their training with Gohan and Vegeeta. In particular, Goten only trained with Chichi before turning Super Saiyan.
Toriyama explained Goten and Trunks acquiring SSJ so easily as probably being the result of them inheritng more S-cells and Earth's peaceful years.
Which gave them more potential. In any case, nothing suggests they have less than Gohan.

Seeing that no one knew it was possible for the fusion to transform, I would think that is a big deal. There is a reason why Goku expected Goten and Trunks to transform into their SSJ before doing their fusion dance. Piccolo was surprised when Gotenks transformed into his SSJ.
At the moment Gotenks, Goku and Vegeta (Daima) are the only Saiyans capable of using SSJ3. No other Saiyan can use SSJ3.

Here are the masters and partners that Goten and Trunks has/had:

- Trunks trained with Vegeta
- Goten trained with Chi Chi
- Goten and Trunks trained with each other
- Goten trained with Gohan (After they decide to join the tournament for one month)
- Goten and Trunks learning the fusion dance from Goku and Piccolo
- Goten and Trunks training in the ROSAT
- Goten and Trunks training off-screen in DBS Super Hero chapter (Gohan mention they have improved)

I worded it wrong, sorry that was my mistake. Other Saiyans can gain SSJ3, but they haven't gained it.

Pretty much all the Saiyans we know have the potential to turn SS3, but the only ones who we know for sure can do it are Gokuu, Vegeeta, Gotenks, and of course, Gogeeta and Vegett.

The obvious Doylist answer is that nobody bothered to include them in this way. This tends to be a lot more noticeable in Dragon Ball because of the sheer number of "potential ways to resolve the plot or prepare that nobody takes advantage of" that have been introduced and not capitalized on.

It's why Piccolo was actually so damn good in DBS: Super Hero, as he actually tried to explore all these other options while staying in-character with his sense of personal pride as a warrior. Majin Buu was asleep, Goku and Vegeta couldn't be contacted, and he didn't want to risk the Red Ribbon Army having contingencies for 17 and 18. So he went with trying to rope Gohan in in a bid to get him back into fighting form while also unlocking his potential to simply release whatever latent power he has within himself.

=

But if you wanted an in-universe reason, it's as simple as them feeling like Goku getting it is good enough since they don't really care to get that much stronger for its own sake.
