I've been curious, how did Toonami handle the end of the Invisible Man fight from the Baba Tournament? Because that required not one but TWO big no-nos for the edited dub
Yamcha: Do you remember the spell to release him - do you know all the words?
Bulma: Of course! I'm not gonna pull a Frieza and screw it up!
Master Roshi: Bulma, I think Frieza failed because he wore too many clothes!

I remember there being surprisingly little censorship with Dragon Ball on Toonami.

Quite a bit actually. Here’s an old Toonzone thread from when the end of the King Piccolo saga first aired on Toonami

https://animesuperhero.com/forums/threa ... 6.3455531/

The big one is they censored Goku killing King Piccolo even though the Z dub showed the exact same scene uncut in flashbacks on Toonami

Per the person reporting the edits
Well, here it is, ladies and gentleman. They couldn't end this story arc without one huge, gigantic, unnecessary cut. And that would be, of course, Piccolo's death. You see, Goku didn't just "magically fly up and defeat Piccolo" like the edited version would have you believe. Goku went through Piccolo's chest. Yes. He ripped a huge freakin' hole in his chest and flew out the other end. Wait, what's that? You... knew that already? Wait, how did you know they cut this? Oh, yeah! Of course, how could I forget? THEY SHOWED THIS SCENE COMPLETELY UNCUT SEVERAL TIMES IN FLASHBACKS THROUGHOUT DRAGONBALL Z.

For the longest time I assumed the tame dialog in the uncut dub was too make it easier for the edited dub but no dialog people wouldn’t think twice about in the uncut dub was too edgy and needed even safer dialog. And from what I gathered unlike Z the og Dragon Ball dub had a no blood policy.

Messi was the one who started with a handicap, much like Goku. His growth hormone deficiency is somewhat comparable to Goku being raised on a planet with only 1G. He had to overcome that disadvantage and work his way up just to reach the same physical baseline as everyone else, and still be called a midget, lol.

The whole narrative that Messi just coasts through his career without putting in any effort is nonsense. It mostly comes from people who have no idea what it takes to be not just a professional athlete but an elite one.

Also, more than anything else, it's their personalities that make Messi the Goku of the story and Cristiano its Vegeta, at least in my opinion. The Cell Games had Goku do what Cristiano won't do for the sake of his team: recognize when someone else is better suited for the job and step aside.

I'll say this. Hate the dialogue & performances all you want, at least FUNi dubbed the show uncut, then edited it later for TV broadcast so they future-proofed the dub at least for when they released it on DVD. Many other edited anime dubs from that time weren't so lucky, sadly.
Only dubs that matter are DB, Kai, & Super. Nothing else.

This may not seem like a big deal, but having the characters in Dragon Ball grow up was a good thing. Just look at Pokemon it got boring seeing Ash never growing up and in Pokemon Black and White they reset his character and made him look like a amateur. To make it worse in Pokemon Black and White, they retconned a Pokemon special episode which Ash and Pikachu celebrate their one year, so Ash should have been 11+ years old not 10 years old.

Then Pokemon Sun/Moon they make Ash look even younger and worse with the new art style, which I guess is old now.

Yesterday I was talking with my mom about long car trips and I brought up our trip to Hilton Head. I very quickly recalled that it was in June 1999. I remember because on that trip, I watched the Captain Ginyu - Assault and Captain Ginyu - Double Cross tapes. I was so starved for Dragon Ball that I watched those tapes over and over. I'm not sure but they may be the episodes of DBZ that I've seen the most.

I remember that time. I could only afford one VHS, since they were the $19.99 uncut tapes, so I bought the one with four episodes and missed three episodes lol

Since it to say, my mind was blown by all the blood 🤣

After the whole 6\7 meme I can never rewatch the Universe 6 Tournament arc the same way ever again, forever tainted.

I remember those days, if I miss an episode on TV then I have to wait for the episode to get a rerun. I remember rewatching some episode of GT on DVD, until I got the complete collection when I could watch all the episodes.

I will keep DBS discussion there, however looks like I will enjoy it. For now I don't have any negative to say about the remake.

There's a chance I've said this before, but, oh well.

Have any of you though that the reason Saiyans cannot breath in space, and don't ever find a work around for this, is because inking an space battle would take a lot of work so Toriyama noped out off it?

Yes, I'm coping, I just think it would be really sick to see characters going full Saitama vs Garou, in Dragon ball.

And I know we are never getting anything like that unless it involves Beerus.

I actually think it was done specifically for the Freeza arc to make the eminent destruction of Namek a credible threat to Super Saiyan Goku, who as Freeza points out, might otherwise be able to tank the explosion itself. From there, it's just committing to that plot point.

Overall, I think it's a good idea. As powerful as Dragon Ball characters get later on, I like that they're still beholden to their biological needs and vulnerabilities (Goku being done in by a disease is another example). It also keeps them feeling more like martial artists than comic super heroes with them not just being able to fly through space whenever they want. The only real consequence in my opinion is after a certain points, it's a bit ridiculous that the characters can fight at full power on Earth without a stray ki blast instantly evaporating the planet.

Yeah, to me, it's things like these that makes some stuff in db a bit weird.

Like Vegeta dying in Space in less than 3 minutes, I'm pretty sure even a regular human would survive longer.

Someone with strong enough lung capacity to be able to survive in the upper layers of the atmosphere should be able to endure longer after the planet explodes, but it was so fast in the movie, it must have been an instant death haha.

Like it's fine if they don't breathe in space, but even as a kid I always found weird that with how fast these character are, that they could not fight there for a few seconds before getting fast to Earth.

Plus when you have them fighting far away from the surface you can buy more how are they able to make sure no blast destroys the planet.

Other characters are a bit on weird territory, like the Androids having an infinite energy reactor but also dying to space.

In actuality, we need oxygen because that's how our cells get energy, something with an infinite reactor thing, should not need to breathe at all, lol.
I really miss ma boy, Black :(

I remember they digitally added a pair of underwere on Goku with dragon balls on them. It was so bad that you can tell it was quickly made in photoshop.
