Making Beerus this darker force of nature was what Dragon Ball Super (2015) was doing, though? Like, am I having a stroke here? I could have sworn this was exactly the same thing that was done back in 2015.

It's also pretty bog standard directing to first introduce the new antagonist in a serious way before showing a more light-hearted side soon after, so I'm not really sure why we're acting like this is literally the only way that Beerus is going to be depicted. We're going to see other sides to him in the following episodes.

Which you may have a point..if this wasn't the literal third version (or 4th if you want to include the manga) of this very story. My issue is not that I find Beerus to be morally ambiguous, which he very much is no matter what version of "Battle of the gods" you are watching, but more so that I find it a bit baffling that trying to make Beerus so scary is what this project deems so important, even though tone wasn't even close to the original Super's problem.

Let me put it this way: If Beerus was what some people wanted which is a full on remake built from the ground up, I can see taking that direction being interesting. Because there's a lot of things you can do with a more menacing Beerus. But knowing what we know. Knowing that this is not going beyond re-animating certain scenes and adding some inserts, knowing that this will solely use Super's original audio and nothing else, it's kinda hard to see how any of this can possibly enhance these characters.

Goku not giving a fck that he made Kaio crash into the house in the 2026 cut.

Dragon Ball was always a kid series and fans should stop being in denial.

I don't think it's being made out to be any more important than usual for a serialized story? You set up your initial character for your audience, then you peel back the layers as the story progresses. Who, other than a bunch of adult nerds on the internet, remembers a movie from 13 (thirteen) years ago? Certainly not the casual audience of children and their families that this series is being created for.

Toei released Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods (Extended Cut) 01 March 2025, so kids and casual had the chance to watch it on cinema and then on Blu-Ray or streaming it online. So this is the 5th time we get to see BoG.
I highly doubt anyone would forget it in 1 or 2 years.

Kids normally like to discuss things that they watch with other kids.

But it is though? If it weren't, then why spend the time and money editing and redrawing scenes to fit this tone? You seem to have this misunderstanding that I'm saying that Beerus should only be seen as comedic. You get that I'm criticizing "how" they did it, not that they did it at all, right? I am specifically talking within the context of what this project is. If some kid likes this, that's all well and good. I don't really care.

I actually don't mind the change in Beerus' character, because that's how he was described originally; he didn't change until he started hanging around Goku and the gang. In the original movie and Super 1.0, we were told he was scary, but never really shown it; this has been fixed here.

There's no need to hype up Beerus yet again when we've already seen him destroy half a planet with a single touch. They could've had him remember his dream about the SSG in some other way.
I heavily disagree. The point of that sequence is not to hype up Beerus' strength, but to show how he's restless and wishy-washy because he's preoccupied trying to remember his dream. It also does a good job of showing the relationship between Beerus and Whis at an angle the episode hasn't done previously.

On top of that, showing Beerus destroying things twice instead of only once adds a good sense of scale and helps sell why the Kaioshin are shitting their pants; as it stands at that point, Beerus is probably going to keep doing that, wiping out a good chunk of the universe, and there's nothing they can do about it.

They can create planets and lives, if they remember they can do that. And if we can ever see them doing that.

So maybe they are not even the best characters to "sell that point", they are just witnessing a god doing his job, so that they can do theirs.

Well, Battle of Gods (2013) handled this better. We have scenes of Beerus waking up and talking about his dream with Whis, then asking about Freeza and being surprised that someone actually managed to defeat him. All of that gives him a much better reason to be on King Kai's planet than in DBS. We don't need feats for everything, just let Beerus show the audience why he's so menacing.

I've erased from my memory most of anime Super and thought the dinosaurs scene and the 'moginaian' where new lol. The little ones and the stronger little one before transforming were charming (transformed was ugly af as it was their scene), but not in the movie or manga and for good reason: it adds nothing. Idk, pick one to show his food motivated sionist tendencies, the dinosaur meat or the chefs

Weird that still the compressed manga is superior next to the movie. Not sure what, but expected more. Tho if the ''closer to Toriyama's vision''' is only filler chopped out guess it's what we'll get for the rest too, since it's not only filler the problem but general writing and character depiction. At least we still have the movies for the arcs that do, but hope we get something better than this for the rest.
Even the opening, agree with most, is generic and boring. Hope it doesn't last all the season, tho for the visuals I would guess it will

I wasn't aware that was the 2014 version that they released later on, I thought they made a new version. Thanks for letting me know.

I actually did do a re-read of the manga in prep for Beerus, and I largely feel the same way about it now that I did a decade ago: it’s the superior version of Super. I know people like some of the moments on the anime, I get it. But I found that a lot of Super’s bullshit decreased when you didn’t have several different writers for a single show.

Granted, I have a more muted impression on the manga exclusive arcs, and I’ve been upfront in claiming that the the Granolah arc is the worst thing Super has ever done across all mediums.

It's true that most of the bullshit is decreased in the manga, but so are the peaks, so in the end I feel very lukewarm about the manga, it's inoffensive but also nothing special

The tone is especially jarring. It looks as if it's trying to appeal to the Western audeince even though Battle of Gods was fundamentally a light hearted story. Beerus' ambiguous nature in the movies allowed some suspension of disbelief regarding why the gang hung out with him. One could wonder if he was just lazy, or easy to persuade, or actually a good guy. Seeing him be so cruel and callous I think works against him as a character. Too much showing.

Some scenes would benefit from new voice lines, even just yells. I appreciated Super's original voice work and I doubt the actors would be able to replicate their performances 10 years later for a remediated product, but some of the new scenes look off without voices.

I hate the OP. It probably isn't but it sounds AI generated. On that topic, I would not be surprised if it's revealed this show used AI in some fashion.

I don't understand why they couldn't just use the movies and add the new scenes they felt necessary to include, but alas.
Can't remember where I read this but (and it makes sense) BOG and ROF are also mixed in with FOX and the super versions elevate any deals TOEI had with fox (which makes sense why they haven't been re-released). However, I don't see why they couldnt use the movies as guide to edit this newer version. Shame about the tonal change as I recall a lot of online backlash to the goofy tone of BOG (atleast in the U.S)
I think that 20th Century Fox only had the theatrical distribution rights to Bog and RF. I could be misremembering, but I think they got Fox involved to hype up that BoG was a "real" movie that you could see in a cinema. That's probably why they pushed to have it shown in IMax theaters in Japan. I don't think that the existing deal impedes upon anything since Toei aired the extended version of Battle of Gods on Fuji TV and did the same for RF with some added animations.

So I've watched this episode. The good: the new scenes were decently done, and the redos were nice, although why change how that monster looked and make it so serious? I like that they made Goku less goofy. I like the overall flow of the episode. The bad: I miss the comedic elements and I guess we will never see Vegeta take Trunks to an amusement parc :( It was extremely cheap to not re record the dialogue or even record dialogue for the new parts. And the opening song is nothing special at all.

I didn't realize that all the dialogue was the same until it was pointed out to me (although I haven't re-visited outside of a few key moments since it aired). It's kinda funny how seriously the story is treating itself since part of the reason Toriyama felt compelled to re-write the original Battle of Gods story was because he felt that Toei's version was too self serious.

Yea, I checked and it's international distribution (https://collider.com/dragon-ball-super- ... ease-date/). They also did Super Broly as well.
