When was there ever an unedited English manga translation?

Discussion regarding the entirety of the franchise in a general (meta) sense, including such aspects as: production, trends, merchandise, fan culture, and more.

Sorry, but the first editions of that volume have always had small lips. that's one change they didn't go back and make; because, it was always there. Feel free to correct me with a scan, but this looks to be about the right date for his first appearance.
Ask DaizenshuuEX
edit- Oh, and I just realized I have no clue about DBZ. At least in VIZ's DragonBall, the lips have always been nonexistent.
For all the flack that FUNimation gets on this forum for their quote about DBZ, there's some modicum of truth to it: a 9-year-old is born every day. Or in some cases, "reborn". DBZ may be a kids' show, but it's been so close to so many hearts all over Japan, America, and quite possibly, even the world.
I know that those are all in the first three volumes (and some of the editions for theose three are unedited, the ones you must have), but I don't think that any edits were made to volumes 4-16, in any of the editions...does anyone know otherwise?
You're correct. The nudity pretty much stops by of the 22nd TB, up vol. 16... Though by that pint onwards there are some instances of Roshi trying to grope Bulma.. (if my memory serves me right)

Yes, I remember those too. It seems that DB volumes 4-16 were not edited, but since there was nothing to edit (except for Popo's lips) in those volumes, that's why everyone thinks they are "unedited", whereas they were never edited so there is no edited/unedited version...that's my theory.

But for this to stand there has to be an edition of VIZ's Dragonball manga that did not censor Mr. Popo's lips, which I don't think exists.

This would be why I went back in with colored pencil and replaced them. Once I realized they'd been changed in every freaking panel, it annoyed the hell out of me until I did.

I freaking love Mr. Popo. He's cool as he is.

Basically my plan is to get the whole manga in the little SJ books, and then get the.... damn, whatever the big red edition that's got all the colored pages is. It's 3:30, I can't remember right now. Even if they bring out a manga that's not edited over here they'll always edit out the sound effects, and I wants those.

You mean in English? What version and do you know what edition? I knew that a few of the tankoubon volumes were "unedited" due to the fact that there was nothing to edit, but I didn't know that there was an unedited release of the entire series...where did you get it?
Was referring to DB. As for Popo's lips, I think that's so inconsequntial I don't consider it. Also I'm one of the the very few who have a legitimate reason for preferring it that way.

I dislike the nudity censorship because I find it sexist. Viz is so worried about moms getting offended by boobs, but what about Goku's penis? If I'm not mistaken, that's why they started censoring DB years ago before the fan outcry.

Apparently a naked underage teenage girl as the butt of several perverted jokes is more important to censor than some little hick boy who just doesn't understand modesty.

True, though I would have sufficed with just the nipples being removed than covering them up with soap or a bra. I think the censor edits look badly drawn compared to Toriyama's artwork. Now the worst drawn of those as the fist edits where the middle was removed.

SSj_Rambo wrote:The weird thing about which volumes VIZ censored is that it is based on what edition it was. Some of the editions for some of the Dragonball tankoubon were edited, while other editions were not. Here's a quick list of which editions of which volumes were left unedited:

-Dragon Ball Volume 1: Fourth Printing uncensored (June 2001)
-Dragon Ball Volume 2: Third Printing uncensored (November 2001)
-Dragon Ball Volume 3: Second Printing uncensored (November 2001)

The worst/funniest part about the Dragonball dub as a whole is that when the anime was first released here (Funi and Saban) there was a ridiculously higher amount of editing in the first 68 episodes.

Right now our best hope for an unedited version of manga is the hardcover collectors editions that come out this year. The fact that these "collectors editions" are all supposed to be rated "T" also leads me to think that they will be unedited, since a majority (if not all) of the DBZ volumes were rated "A".
Though what about the current edits in DB, which is rated 'T'? Though I miss the days where Viz just slapped a rating and left it as is.

I remember that these ones I read years ago had a 13+ warning on them.

Yeah. That was when VIZ gave DBZ an "A" rating despite the coarse language they put in it. Now VIZ is afraid to put any swearing in their "T" rated mangas.

I can't speak for dragon ball, but the "comic" releases of "DBZ" had popo's lips unedited. I'll have to hunt down the volume with him in it but I'll make a scan for you sometime.

Dragonball is probably a lot more widely read by younger audiences than something like Ikki Tousen. I just have this feeling that removing nipples would still leave an image that bothers a lot of parents (i.e. the people who spend the money to buy manga for their kids) as to where making it seem as if she was supposedly covered up in the first place in the art makes for a smoother read and seems less likely to bother some overprotective parent.

That doesn't mean I agree with it, but I'm trying to see where VIZ would be coming from on the issue. I'm sure if Dragonball wasn't that popular we'd get less censorship out of it.

Kendamu if that's the case, then why doesn't Viz have an online only Uncut version of the manga.
The series doesn't start with the arrival of Raditz. Stop being lazy and watch Dragonball.

Because they have too much time turning ending themes to anime like Bleach into silly slide shows. :P
