Viz Big Version
Viz Big Version
Excuse me if this has been answered elsewhere, there's a lot to be read through here.
I noticed the first Viz Big edition of Dragon Ball Z is out. Does anyone have it yet, and know if the dialogue translation/adaptation in the Viz Big version is the same as the dialogue in the previous, normal-sized Shonen Jump version?
Thanks.

They've apparently taken all the swear words out, but other than that the translation seems the same. There are also a few more things that they've censored, like Bulma is the shower.

I wouldn't say ALL cursing's been removed, but lots has in DBZ. DB has lucked out in that regard a little more, but the bubblebra might annoy you. Annoys me!
For all the flack that FUNimation gets on this forum for their quote about DBZ, there's some modicum of truth to it: a 9-year-old is born every day. Or in some cases, "reborn". DBZ may be a kids' show, but it's been so close to so many hearts all over Japan, America, and quite possibly, even the world.
Even though it wasn't censored in the tankoubon releases? That makes no sense. It also makes no sense that in the tankoubon I have, Bulma isn't censored in the shower, but she is when Krillin pulls here shirt down in front of Roshi. Thats not just some weird edited version I got is it? Or has that scene always been censored?Herms wrote:There are also a few more things that they've censored, like Bulma is the shower.

Originally, the shower scene was uncensored. Or at least it was in my copy; there's so many different editions out it's kind of hard to keep track. And the scene with Bulma and the invisible man was originally uncut as well, but in later editions a bra was added. There was a thread at the time where someone pointed this out.Kid Trunks wrote:Even though it wasn't censored in the tankoubon releases? That makes no sense. In the VIZBIG release, Bulma's mind-destroying nipples have been covered up by soap bubbles that magically take the form of a bra. There's actually a filler scene on Planet Namek where Bulma is taking a bath where this happens. Maybe Viz got the idea from there?bkev wrote:Bubblebra?

The Bubbles were in later printings of volume one. The original (which you have) was uncensored though.Herms wrote:Originally, the shower scene was uncensored. I still think it would have been better to just erase the damn nipples. I think a bubble bra looks tacky and unrealistic.Herms wrote:Originally, the shower scene was uncensored. Awww, I was hoping to justify collecting them when I already own most of the manga in regular size to myself.
I was thinking they might go in the opposite direction and uncensor it a bit since it's supposed to be a higher quality version, but I guess that's too much to hope for with Dragon Ball Z.

For some people who are more into the pleasure of reading the manga than analyzing it compared to the Japanese version the few colored pages that VIZ added for this release makes up for a lot of the removed cuss words. They also added some ridiculous old fashioned adjectives such as "august", which in this case is supposed to mean "marked by majestic dignity or grandeur" to describe Master Roshi from Goku's point of view, in the Dragonball VIZ VIG.

"August" isn't all that ridiculously old-fashioned, though it is an odd choice for DragonBall. I think that Viz sometimes picks words entirely because they find it amusing to use them in a kids manga.SSj_Rambo wrote:They also added some ridiculous old fashioned adjectives such as "august", which in this case is supposed to mean "marked by majestic dignity or grandeur" to describe Master Roshi from Goku's point of view, in the Dragonball VIZ VIG.

As if the covers of the first 2 issues of Dragonball's VIZ BIG's weren't similar enough, the covers for Dragonball Z VIZ BIG 2 and 4 are nearly identical. I know they have done like 6 re-releases of this, but it's not that hard to get cover images that don't look like they're from frame by frame screenshots.
