Well, I got into the series through the Funi dub, and I remember that as soon as I got into the Viz manga and found out Tenshinhan was the character's actual name I developed an instant dislike for "Tien", just because I hated the idea of changing a character's name.

Uh? Well, how about all the international fans of the series, then? They know English, but most likely wouldn't give two shits about the American dub of the series. Is it fair to them to use American dub names? They can't help how they got into the series.

Seriously, just let them do their thing the way they want to do it, sit back, and enjoy.

All I was saying is why can't they use a mixture of both ? Why should the dub fans have to suffer ? If someone grew up watching the series on Toonami why should they be penalized for it ? "Oh try not to use the dub names unless your making fun of them" Well what the fuck ? What if I grew up watching the dub ? Again all I'm saying that's not really fair and they should try and use both equally. Something they've already been doing. They give their nods to the original and they give nods to the dub.

Don't most Abridged series use dub names and voices, even when the creator/creators hate said dub? (Yu-Gi-Oh Abridged)

What's so awful about having to listen to names different from what you're familiar with? It's something fans of the original have to go through all the time, since the majority of things written about DragonBall in English treats it as synonymous with the Funi dub of Z/GT. You are right that it's completely up to Team 4-Star to decide which names they want to use, but I don't see what's so bad about Kunzait suggesting they not use “Tien”.

And I also agree that it’d be nice if the dub names were kept to a minimum unless they’re either being made fun of or are part of some really clever gag (like the Makankosapo/Special Beam Cannon bit in episode 2… that was just fucking great Very Happy ). Just having them there for the sake of having them is very distracting for those of us who just aren’t used to them and never will be, and needlessly draws attention away from the good stuff.
When he said "it’d be nice if the dub names were kept to a minimum unless they’re either being made fun of or are part of some really clever gag" I took it as Try not to use them at all because "Just having them there for the sake of having them is very distracting for those of us who just aren’t used to them and never will be..." SO I took that as "I don't like the dub so try and keep that shit separate." I see where he is coming from and in SOME ways I agree. All I was saying is that its not really fair to dub fans. We all like Dragon Ball but we all got into it in different ways. I just thought it would be nice if TEAM 4 STAR tried to appeal to all the fans and not just CATER to fans of the original. Which they have for the most part been doing. (Appealing to everyone I mean) :?

I don't see them using German and French dub names, the bastards. Think of the poor fans from THOSE countries.

That's because it's not a German or French parody, it's spoken in english so the american dub applies.

Best we're going to get, and are getting, is a party that's almost entirely devoid of the magic that made the original one so awesome that we even want more.

That's a faulty statement to toss out there. I can't make a better movie myself, but Mortal Kombat Annihilation is absolutely terrible and I should be able to say that as much as I want.

Doesn't mean I don't own it, though.

No, I meant he could make his own Abridged series. There are a couple good parodies out there on Youtube. SSJGozar's DBZ: Alternate Reality is really funny.

What I'm saying is that there's a good chance that someone is actually completely incapable of making their own fan parody. That doesn't mean they should be unable to criticize or suggest based on existing works. You don't need to be a director to critique movies.

They called the Dai-Kaio "Grand Kai" and the Dai-Kaioshin..."Dai Kaioh". Seriously.
...and I can remember clear as day once upon a time when even “Saiyan” and “Krillin” made me do a confused double take. Fuck, I’m STILL not completely used to Saiyan even after all these years, and I doubt I ever will be.
You might already know this, but "Saiyan" didn't actually originate with the Funi dub. It was used as the alphabet spelling of saiyajin on Carddass cards and other bits of Japanese merchandise years before the dub began.

Kunzait_83 wrote:Useless personal trivia: East Kaioshin was my original favorite character back during the earliest pre-any English dub years of my Dragon Ball fandom. Kami, Karin (or “Senpyou” as I mainly knew him then), the Kaios and Kaioshins, the Dragon Ball pantheon and mythological elements in general along with the backstory for Babidi and Majin Buu were a large part of the “childhood mystique” DBZ held for me back then, and was a major factor in holding my interest beyond the gorgeous artwork and designs. Hence the above described “brain freezie” moment.
Yeah, I've always loved the mythological feel as well. And the fact that that feeling is largely removed in the dub is one of the main reasons I'm not fond of it. It's one of the things that made me prefer Viz's manga very early on, since they left that intact very well.

But anyway, isn't Karin's title "senbyou", not "senpyou"? byou is the alternate reading for the kanji for cat, but maybe it's a rendaku thing. In my manga the little mark in the furigana that distinguishes between p and b sounds is insanely tiny, so I can't really tell what it is.
I could very well be wrong, but out of the dozens of different spellings for Kuririn I remember reading from those days, I’d never heard of “Krillin” as a spelling for that character ever until the dub. Kuririn, Kulilin, Klylyn, or any incalculable mish-mash combinations thereof sure. I even once saw it as "Kylun" like the character from Excalibur, which always got a chuckle out of me. :P But never Krillin, not anywhere. It stuck out like a sore thumb. Hence why I always personally considered that one just as much of a dub name as “Tien” or “Hercule”.
I've never seen anything pre-dub use "Krillin" either, though nowadays it seems to have crept into Japanese merchandise, similiar to "Frieza". But "Krillin" is a valid way to romanize the character's name, unlike "Hercule" or "Tien", which are flat-out name changes.
