Shonen Jump Collectors Edition Dissection.

Post by Tanooki Kuribo » Sat Aug 16, 2008 9:49 pm

So I got the Shonen Jump Collectors Edition book today. I really wasn't planning on buying and actually didn't expect to see this being it comes out on the 19. But whatever, I saw it in Kinokuniya and just decided to get it because I hate leaving that place empty handed. It was sealed in plastic so I really didn't know what to expect until I got home.

(Sorry, my camera is shit)
I think every one seen the cover by now, if not...

Image

Its actually a tad bigger then the original Shonen Jump issue 1 (shown below it). I was also shocked that when you take the book jacket off the original covers (with the exception of the rating graphic) are there. I really thought Viz was just going to abandoned them for this newer cover but not so.

You open the book and it shows a bunch of past Shonen Jump covers...

Image

I think the Manga might be unedited. Not that it really matters right now, its only a few pages of DragonBall but meh...

Image

So I compared this book to the original issue one and it seems its actually pretty much 80% issue one, with a few added things here and there. But it's really pretty much issue one. There is one thing that bothered me. It actually pissed me off. When you open the original issue one there is this awesome picture of the cast of the DragonBall series with "Congratulations Shonen Jump" over the art. This for some fucked up reason was omitted. Why? Why! Uhg... Oh well, to see this dissection in better detail you can watch this video (with some Animal Crossing Music)....

( I know it seems a bit clunky at times but Iam holding the camera with one hand and trying to turn the pages and keep the book from closing with the other hand. Whatever :D)

So it's pretty much a reprint, I don't know if I'll get it...
Did you get for like $10?

I don't believe there was ever anything edited from those chapters. Viz didn't really start heavily censoring things in its Shonen Jump line until later.

I have the first issue, so I don't really need to buy this reprint.
The series doesn't start with the arrival of Raditz. Stop being lazy and watch Dragonball.

I think he means Viz didn't edit anything that was printed in the original issue.

Well, nice to know they have the original cover underneath what I guess turned out to be the dust jacket. :)

That "new" cover really upset me when I first saw it.
Especially because Viz feels the need to rewrite history and lie by saying series that began in their second issue really began in their first. >_>

I won't be picking it up both because I have the original copy and because Dragon Ball was the only reason I bought Viz's Jump in the first place. As soon as they took it out of the magazine I abandoned it.

Yep, Naruto didn't even make issue one. Which is funny considering they were pushing Dragonball and Yugi-oh in beginning before the Naruto overload.

I remember the Yugi-oh overload; but in retrospect it doesn't seem nearly as bad as what they did with Naruto.

Or maybe I just have sour feelings on Naruto in general due to the fact that several people tried to push the series on me with the zest of fanaticism. I tried it four times and it never stuck, yet they were all "leave Dragon Ball and join us in Naruto Land because its popular and deep and angsty".

For the record there are only four characters in that entire ninja series who I like. The rest I either don't care about or can't stand to even look at.

I like Naruto and all, but them pushing the show to the moon without much notice kinda got on my nerves. Great story and solid characters, not to mention it's fun to read. The only serious issue I have is Naruto's core fanbase....I really dislike them.

I stopped reading after Sandland ended.
I read the DBZ individual comics, and then picked up the manga later on.

Naruto pisses me off, but not as much as One Piece...It is just insulting. SaiyaJedi can just rip Viz's ass, he'll do it better than anyone else I'm sure.

Both manga-ka who write those pratically worship Toriyama. Their stories aren't that bad either.

...I know.
I don't like the Viz translation. I'd rather learn Japanese and read the manga I can buy from Mitsuwa.

That's always a good route. But if you don't know Japanese, how do you know it's a bad translation.

So, no language edits?
For all the flack that FUNimation gets on this forum for their quote about DBZ, there's some modicum of truth to it: a 9-year-old is born every day. Or in some cases, "reborn". DBZ may be a kids' show, but it's been so close to so many hearts all over Japan, America, and quite possibly, even the world.
How much bad language are you going to have in a manga for children 9 to 11?

I know from what my friends tell me, they can read Japanese, the podcast, and what I see from different message boards.
Then there is OneManga. They have a ton of Shone series translated from the Japanese ShoneJump weekly/monthly release.

Excuse me for asking, but what's so bad about One Piece's translation? (Zolo's aside). I've been reading some rough fan translations for the manga series and seen the fansubs years back, so I generally don't have a huge problem with it. Is it the attack name translations?

This might come off as a little jaded as I've been reading One Piece since early 1998. So, sorry if I step on any toes. Also this is based on the first year of One Piece that ran in Shonen Jump. My brother had a subscription. So I'm not sure if things have changed any since then.

I think that VIZ has translators that are (in all likely hood) very good at their jobs, but the people who are localizing their manga are the people screwing it up. By adding in silly dialogue (yo ho ho and shiver me timbers come to mind and other pirate speak) and changing existing dialogue. There are many times where the emotion in the original isn't conveyed due to them trying to 'kid' things up. They try to avoid bad words as much as possible, and in most cases pick words that just don't carry as much weight as the original Japanese. You can tell in many spots that they were probably given an accurate script to work with, but the localizers tried to think of ways to 'jazz' it up. In the process they killed much of the original meaning in numerous scenes. It's that same problem I've had with all of VIZ's translations so far.

I always feel like VIZ doesn't take into account that there were fans of their different mangas long before they got the properties. So they have the attitude of they'll get what we give them and nobody will be the wiser.

Also on a side note VIZ didn't change Zoro's name to Zolo until after 4kids! did their dub of One Piece. Which brings me to another reason why I dislike VIZ they let too many outside factors impact what they are doing. Oh no one person out there complained that Dragonball is too raunchy for their children to read! Quick censor it immediately! It is that attitude that will forever keep me from taking the company and everything it does seriously. I really hate complaining about it, because most people seem to think that I'm attacking them for liking something that VIZ has put out. In reality I just want people to get a perfectly accurate translation of the source material.

I'm glad that I have my 50 volumes of One Piece the way nature intended them.

Sorry for the rant. I tend to drone on and on when it's a topic I really care about.
