Why does Dragonball attract so many of... "Them"?

Discussion regarding the entirety of the franchise in a general (meta) sense, including such aspects as: production, trends, merchandise, fan culture, and more.

I'd like to point out 'Believe it!' hasn't been used in...150 episodes of the dub, actually. 8)

Now I could be way out in left field on this one because I've never actually watched the show, but doesn't Naruto usually get angry when people think he isn't a ninja and yell "I'm a ninja!" a lot?

And the subbing ignores it, so you don't pick up on a catch phrase.
Except for a handful that use it as an opportunity to toss in a swear word.

Almost every time.

Now there's another answer to the topic question: fansubbers trying to make DB/Z/GT seem more "extreme" or whatever by inserting random swearwords. Probably not too much of a factor thesedays, since I think DragonBall fansubs are a thing of the past, but back in the day, especially the earlier days of the dub, fansubbers like AnimeLab created the impression that there was some "true" version of the dub that had huge amounts of swearing and buckets of blood. When the prominence of those sorts of things in the show is exaggerated, it can attract some crazy people.

That's different, he isn't even using a Japanese word it's completely made up. Half your sentence is in another language therefore it's irrelevant because Naruto had never done anything of the sort and nobody claims he SHOULD be doing anything of the sort. if your sentence ended with a make believe word that didn't exist in any language then your comparison would have made sense.

To us. It doesn't have a direct translation into english, but carries certain connotations to Japanese listeners.

Kinda like Kyattou Ninden Teyandee often being shortened to something like Cat Ninden or Cat Ninja Legend, with the Teyandee being omitted or left alone. That doesn't make it a non-word, it's just hard to translate into english.

Then at least give me a source on what "dattebayo" is supposed to mean instead of giving me vague examples from other anime.

Edit: In any regards your argument still condones the fact it isn't a real word.

I believe I added "to us."

It's called "lost in translation." In the case of dattebayo, it isn't a vocab word with a direct meaning. But it conveys something about the attitude and personality of the character saying it (to the Japanese). To us it means absolutely nothing whatsoever and doesn't convey squat. That's why they went ith "believe it" in an attempt to give him something annoying to attach to his sentences to convey the same attitude.

Then the Narutards complained to no end because that meaningless phrase was taken out. Leave it up to people who get near PERFECT releases for their franchise to complain about small shit like that. I think that most of the people who complained about never even watched the Naruto dub. Narutards are scum in my eyes, they have no clue what it's like to have substandard English releases for their franchise across the board.
The series doesn't start with the arrival of Raditz. Stop being lazy and watch Dragonball.

Let me just state for the record once more I couldn't care less what Naruto says and the show has one of the best dubs I've ever seen. All I'm saying is if it isn't a real word and it is just up to the way he says it in the Japanese version couldn't it merely be up to the dub voice actor to convey the emotion in her voice when Naruto says the phrase? She could easily bring a false word like dattebayo to life in English and have it take the same cocky child like attitude with nothing but the infliction in her voice. Believe it works too all I'm saying is they could have left the phrase alone if they wanted to and I think it could have been pulled off equally as well. I don't even really watch Naruto all too much (in fact truth be told I really dislike the franchise as a whole) so hopefully no snarky comments were ignorantly directed towards me in this topic thus far.

They complained about something that wasn't even in the original...Wah  You know, us DBZ fans do bitch...But not like this! We complain about things missing for the original script, not about added shit.

We are some of the most devoted Dragonball fans on the web, and one of our traits is that we solely refer to the original manga 80% of the time. If that group of Naruto fans are part of the most authorative Naruto fan base on the web (like we are a part of the most authorative Dragonball fan bases) and they still complain about things that aren't even in the original than yes I'll be a little shocked, but there are dozens of online communities of Dragonball fans that complain about filler segments and yet we exist. So unless you can prove to me that these complaints from these Naruto fans are from the "elite" Naruto fan base, I won't use it as a representation of Naruto fans as a whole.

Do remember though, a lot of member here often discuss inconsistencies and problems with the anime and filler in general.

Don't take me as a "Naruto fan defendant" or anything, I personally really despise the show and a lot of the fans it has generated, but I do appose generalizing people based on others that share their fandom, because people that don't like us because of our love of Dragonball usually don't like us because of the other Dragonball fans out there that are mindless ranting people that act like 9 years kids in the case of any form of dispute.

Basically I don't want people using other Dragonball fans as a representation of who and what I am, so therefore I don't use a small group of Naruto fans a representation of what they all are like, even though they are usually the same (based on my limited exposure to Naruto fans).

Holy fuck that's a whole lot of writing. I take reading seriously, except in school which they force me to read gay books which I didn't and cheated, but wow I couldn't even finish a quarter of the second one. The second one must be take at the least 30 minutes to write. I feel bad for you man. Damn whoever read the whole second page I bow down to you.

I'm totally with you on the not judging an entire fanbase by it's worst members bit, but with Naruto I'm gonna have to make an exception. I know that somewhere out there there is group of well spoken and intelligent Naruto fans who can speak to eachother in a civil tone like we do here, but the majority of the fanbase is made up the "Narutards". It's really quite sad that an amazing dub like this has got one of the worst fandom's.

And the point about people thinking the same way about us Dragonball fans I can't really agree with completely. I'm sure most people do see our fanbase as the 9 year old boys screaming at eachother like chimps arguing over which double digit level of super saiyan Broly is the coolest as. But the thing that sets us apart is that our fanbase in large really isn't the screaming 9 year olds, where as with Naruto the horrible generalization of fans really is how most of the fans are. Maybe I'm just spoiled here at the forum and I've been around a terrific group of fans for so long that I forgot how it actually is :)

On a side note, does our fandom even have a nickname, like the Narutards?

I'm just surprised by the length of it. I'm sure if his teacher (I seriously hope this was a kid) asked him to write a 500 word essay, he would have a tough time. :P

Not exactly, it's the ignorant fans who don't ackowledge such things as the show actually being made in Japan first that give them a bad name.

You've just been spoiled by Daizex, is all. The "screaming 9 year old" count on here is relatively small (and those that do get in tend to get booted out eventually) compared to the norm... everywhere else. That was actually part of what I was talking about in my first post. Those types are more prevelant in DB fandom than any other I've encountered, this includes Naruto. In fact I've met very few of them in the Naruto fandom. Granted, I'm barely active in that, and I've met my share of them as attested to by the Dattebayo stuff earlier. But by and large I've encountered at least 50 of "them" in DB the fandom for everyone 1 in Naruto.
