Metalwario64 wrote:This is amazing! Season 3, 4 and 5 looked really close to the Dragon Boxes, but were just a tad blurry and were a bit too bright. Now season 6 looks just as good as their Remastered movies, if not better and rivals the picture quality of the Dragon Box!

If only they had this quality from the beginning, then the people who complain would only complain about the cropping (which seems to be even less this time with even more on the sides than before) and far less would be boycotting it. It's a darn shame that the earlier seasons were just a way to test new waters.

I am even more excited about this set than ever now!
I've been noticing this too. For Seasons 1 & 2, everyone was like, "What the fuck is this absurdity, it's cropped!" but since Season 3, a lot of people have been saying, "Wow, sans the cropping, these look great!" Although Season 6 looks slightly more saturated, I actually like the colors more.

But technically speaking the DBZ Movies were never intended to be seen in 4:3 yet I recall in the past people hailing Funimation for giving us them in 4:3 as opposed to 16:9.

Technically, yes, the Japanese films were released in widescreen in their Japanese release. The fact of the matter, though, is that Funimation uses the ORIGINAL PRINTS and released them in such a way as to have no picture obscured.

Yes, Japan had it in theaters in widescreen. Yes, they had it in 16:9 on the DVD. But in this case, the Japanese are the ones that are obscuring the picture. You have to realize, for those who usually like widescreen, it's because it obscures the least amount of picture.

In my opinion, Funimation released the films on DVD in the same way that Japan should have.

The thing is, the movies were animated with the intent of being cropped, and if you look you can notice animation errors(such as Gohan's Masenko in movie 3 where they didn't even draw all of it) that were not meant to be seen. So cropping them gives all of the intended footage.

But the movies were intended for 16:9, whereas the show was not. Hell, the widescreen actually exposes a couple of flaws of the dub. There's this one scene in Season 5 in the episode where Vegeta and Trunks get out of the ROSAT where Vegeta is slightly off screen if you're watching it on a 4:3 TV. In the Japanese version, he doesn't say anything, but in the dub, he does. If you watch it on a computer or a widescreen TV, you can clearly see that his mouth isn't moving.

So, I don't know how much of the set you've actually watched so far, Gozar, but does this set have the honor of being the only one released so far with no missing line problems?

I'm surprised there's none of it with those screencaps of Gohan, 'cuz if I remember correctly, there's a whole lot of shaking and flashes going on in that part.

But yes, seconded. This is the only wee problem I've had with the later sets, so I'm curious as well.

If that's true, then it's one less thing I have to bitch about.
The series doesn't start with the arrival of Raditz. Stop being lazy and watch Dragonball.

Well, these sets look similar to the Double feature sets (which didn't have that problem), and the disappearing lines issue was also apparent during bright flashes of light, so I guess it's safe to say that it's non-existent.

I finished Disc 1, and so far I noticed the line breakup once when Chichi fell over (it typically happens in earthquake/screen-shaking scenes). But seeing as how I haven't watched any of the major fights yet I couldn't tell you if it's actually obvious in battle.

Wow, could someone get a shot from what the singles looked like? I know those were slightly zoomed in, and looking at how LITTLE was cropped on the Season Set-image, it almost seems like this one isn't missing ANYTHING compared to the singles! And if so, I might just start buying the sets again.

Wow. It might just be me, but cropping or no I think these look horrible. The colors look are dark and dirty as hell.

Just for comparison:

I does look like they did a better job on the encode for certain. I just see noise (no macro-blocking). But the noise is present on both versions (minus the dirt cleanup on DBox). I'll have to go grab it for cheap somewhere.

On another note, what are you guys using to take screen shots? There is consistently a green line going down the right side (which indicates its not handling all the color spaces to a pixel perfect level I believe - its not resizing one of the properly).

I can later tonight... plus, I do want to compare the blocking issues on the old discs.

Well, the dirt is present on the Dragon Boxes as well, and the picture is just enlarged a bit because of the resolution (so the dirt is more apparent) but that is no problem for me. The colors look about the same as the Remastered movies which means that some dark details are lost.

Either way, it is still at least 100x better than the old FUNi singles and is very close to the Dragon Boxes. Also there is no sign of DVNR from what I can see.

At least we didn't get this:

Those little specs of grain you see which is just a little bit of casual film damage that happens with age.

Well, if memory serves the old release was Macroblock hell, so you're right in that regard. Saying it's very close to the DragonBoxes is a bit of a stretch though. They have also toned down the DVNR which I give them credit for. Still, these shots look fairly bad in terms of color fidelity to the original.

I do retract what I said though, it's not dirt so much as the grain that I'm seeing. I think I was simply confused by the dark, dark colors in what I remember from the International Channel/DragonBox as a lighter colored scene. Plus, the grain is more neutral in the DragonBox masters than the film that FUNi is using for their sets, probably because the former is a newer master. Seeing the two side-by-side helped, I was too lazy to pull the disc and look at the episode myself ;p

Don't confuse dirt with film grain. By nature, film has grain that is evident unless it's removed with DVNR (which also destroys detail). Dirt, on the other hand, is practically any type of damage that occurs because of age or mishandling of the film.

In other words, grain isn't bad, but dirt is.

I would address the Movie 16:9 Vs. 4:3 thing since some people already picked up on it.

I'm not done with the Box Set yet...However there is quite a lot less then the others. I think ever Box Set has gotten better and better with that problem and this one is no exception.

Hey, From the screens it looks like there is a lot of grain, is that just because of the screenshot or did they let the grain intact.

Hey Gozar, or anybody who has the set by now, I just remembered an important question regarding the revised dub.

Has Dende been redubbed? Ceyli Delgadillo voiced him when FUNi's in-house voice cast took over in the Freeza Saga, and she voiced the character throughout the series until the end of the Cell Games before he grew up. For the Ultimate Uncut redub, Laura Bailey took over in Delgadillo's absence and redubbed the character from his debut until the end of the Freeza Saga when he went back to Namek. He returns in the Cell Games episodes, so has Laura Bailey returned to redub the character?

Has Child Goku been redubbed in the flashbacks too? Again, Ceyli Delgadillo originally voiced him here, but has Stephanie Nadolny returned to fix this inconsistancy?

And MajinVegita said "dark colors" because the set's color palette is a tad darker than the DragonBox, if those screens are correct.

Gozar (or anybody else who has the set), could you please put the season 7 trailer up on YouTube or something? I'd really like to see it and get an idea for what they are going to advertaise most in that season.
