When they film something, there isn't a thin sheet of ever-moving grain in front of the actors. There's just the actors, the sets, the props, and any CGI that's to be done later. That's all we want to see: what was meant to be on the film. We believe intent trumps reality, essentially. Grain is simply a byproduct of the film-making process. The grain isn't constructed along with the film. It's not like sprocket holes or something: if it had never been there, we wouldn't have missed it. Am I getting my point across at all?
I know what you're trying to say (as in the animators didn't draw it) so I can respect the point of view, but I guess I"m just "old-fashion" ... since it is apart of the show's history, "it belongs" is the way I look at it. Newer anime that is strictly done digitally doesn't have any, but seems to "shiny" to me most of the time, it doesn't give it a "real" feel that the grain achieves (which we see used in films today (example 1, example 2, example 3 - warning, 1080P images, and I fail to see how these movies would look better with the grain removed 100%.), some of the movies actually add the grain back in. So, I usually favor it. I don't think some movies/anime would look the same without it.

That said, there can be too much. I think there are a few episodes FUNI has that have too much grain, but I don't think it would look good to remove it all together.

The Saiya-jin saga UUE for instance, they look like they're covered in black pepper, but I find that preferable over the detail raped blurry season sets.

@ Whoever owns this season:

On the little booklet that comes with each season it has a little "About the Transfer" article about the remastering prosess on the back. I was wondering if they made any changes to this article in the later season since they have obviously made some changes to the remastering process.

Do you mean the season six ad, becuase that ad was created by Funi itself. I don't see anything special about that.

...or am I missing something?

Oh, I was just pointing out that it's spreading like a disease. Nothing special. I just found it note worthy.

Ah yeah, the first episode went through some kind of grinder. That's not really what I'm referring to... that actually needs some adjustment, not preservation...

But you're right, when the "fix" is blurring the image... its not a great fix.

I never notice how fucking awful these sets look until somebody posts side by side comparisons, that's probably why the season set lovers hate these threads.

Well...at least we never had to deal with something like this after Season One (not counting the vanishing lines):

Yeah, on the whole, the sets have gotten a lot better since those first two.

I honestly don't recall it looking that blurry. And that tear was up for like, a millisecond, so I don't really give shit.

But I do agree the sets have improved with almost every release.

It was still very noticeable. :P

But yeah, I'd say the only problems the sets (footage-wise) are having now are keeping a consistent range of colors (especially YOU, Season Two), vanishing lines (which has seemed to lessen within each set), blurry footage and obviously the cropping.

Other than that, it's gotten better.

I'm watching the "remastered" Bardock special right now, and it really looks great to me. What season set's quality would it most closely correspond to? I suppose it's not "perfect," but things could always be better. Maybe it's just because I remember the fansub days, but the season sets never bothered me.

It's difficult to say, because the movies and specials have actually been looking BETTER than the season sets have. Which is really odd considering it leads one to wonder what it is they're doing differently.

If the new sets are looking better thanks to changes in the process they used to remaster, is it possible that the earlier sets will get phased out for better-looking versions of those sets?

Wow, Funimation really turned to blue up color on the Season One box set.

Not likely. They did the remastering process on their masters, rather than copies. All the damage done is permanent. So this is about as good as they're gonna get until FUNi eventually releases them on Blu-Ray, which won't make much of a difference.
