An observation on Dragon Ball's English-speaking fanbases.
Yeah, when I was occasionally visiting a Haruhi Suzumiya board when I introduced myself and mention one of my interests as Dragon Ball, I got crap for it because apparently Dragon Ball fans "aLL tYpE lYkE THIS!!" and act like morons. Granted, there are some DB fans that act like that, but hey, that's with any fandom so I don't know why it goes hand in hand with DB.

I wouldn't say that's the case with any fandom. I really dobut there are Witch Hunter Robin and Ghost in the Shell fans(to name a couple popular properties) that behave like that.SonEric84 wrote:Yeah, when I was occasionally visiting a Haruhi Suzumiya board when I introduced myself and mention one of my interests as Dragon Ball, I got crap for it because apparently Dragon Ball fans "aLL tYpE lYkE THIS!!" and act like morons. Well, I guess I shouldn't have said "fandom." What I should have said is, there are idiots in this world interested in a lot of different things, their stupidity usually doesn't stem from said interest.

...and how does that apply?
Ever heard of the Inuyasha uprising in 2003 on Adult Swim's board when they pulled Inuyasha off the schedule for a break?Super Ghost Kamikaze wrote:Is that two words?Castor Troy wrote:Two words = Inu Yasha.Herms wrote: You'd be surprised...

The series doesn't start with the arrival of Raditz. Stop being lazy and watch Dragonball.

Or how about when Cartoon Network dared to put moustaches on all the characters during the episode that broadcast on April Fool's. Fans acted as if they'd commited some sort of religious sacrilige.Raki wrote:Ever heard of the Inuyasha uprising in 2003 on Adult Swim's board when they pulled Inuyasha off the schedule for a break?Super Ghost Kamikaze wrote:Is that two words?Castor Troy wrote: Two words = Inu Yasha.

And the point is, there's idiots in every fandom and to believe otherwise is fooling yourself I'm afraid.
Jerseymilk: "Can I tell you something?"
B-kun: "What?"

To be fair that does sound pretty lame.Jerseymilk wrote:Or how about when Cartoon Network dared to put moustaches on all the characters during the episode that broadcast on April Fool's. It's not anything to do with "being fair". The fans weren't just rolling their eyes and muttering "lame" and walking away. They were ranting online and such and freaking like someone had burned the "Church of Inu Yasha" down. Trust me, you don't want to give those types of rabid fans any quarter. >>Victator Supreme wrote:To be fair that does sound pretty lame.Jerseymilk wrote:Or how about when Cartoon Network dared to put moustaches on all the characters during the episode that broadcast on April Fool's. Okay to start, here's where I think I fit in within the fanbase(s).
Japanese version fans (I'm a dub fan too, but I love the Japanese version too.)
Nostalgic English dub Z fans (Hey, I might be 15; but, I have some nostalgia from watching around the time I was 7.)
Post-Season 2 English dub Z fans
Japanese version fans who enjoy the dub as well (I'm even on both versions so, I'm keeping these two here.)
English dub fans who enjoy the original as well (I'm even on both versions so, I'm keeping these two here.)
The English dub fans who like GT, but not the dub's music
The English dub fans who enjoy both the FUNimation and Ocean Group dubs
The fans who enjoy both releases and would prefer to own either one if given the choice
The fans who enjoy the English dub with the Japanese music
I'm pretty mellow when it comes to DB; I enjoy a lot of things from Dragon Ball. I actually like some of the dub cast (Sean Schemmel: Goku); but, I'd rather have some of the cast be re-cast (Linda Young: Freeza). I like to use Saiya-jin way more than Saiyan; but, I still use Saiyan. Plus, I happen to like both FUNimation and Ocean's Casts and I also like GT. Only thing I think FUNimation needs to do now is re-dub all 508 episodes of the Dragon Ball Trilogy correctly. Especially, since we know they can do a fantastic dub EX: FMA.

Neither does it for I, Chris. Neither does it for I...Tsukento wrote:Hell, you can hardly find DBZ clips that don't have Faulconer's music plastered all over it. I've seen some asshatery involved where someone's mixed Faulconer music into DRAGON BALL.
It honestly just doesn't work for me.
By biggest beef with Western fandom is how divided it is by immaturity. When I hear people insult 'dub fans' or insult the Japanese version it makes this one sad.
This large list of fandom groups just further proves something I said in the Live Action Movie topic about a week ago. Everything in the DB Faniverse is always a big deal. No matter what it is, not only do people take sides. But the bulk of people become insanely hard assed about their opinion.
Sometimes I really despise the DragonBall Fan Base. It's just simply disgusting how people act towards others opinions. What's worse is, not one of us here is not guilty of acting like immature pricks about something from time to time.
It's also terrible how when someone has a preference so many people assume that means that they hate everything else that's not that. Like if you like Sean Schemmel therefore you have to hate Masako Nozawa. Or if you like Toshio Furukawa then you have to hate Chris Sabat (Or Scott McNeil).
Plus the constant labeling. People who like the JP Version are labeled as purist pricks. While fans of the Dub are labeled as ignorant flamers who probably have no exposure to the Manga or Original JP Anime. It's a crying shame.
Sometimes I truly feel like I'm the only person in the world who has such a true and deep respect and love for both English Dub (FUNi or Ocean) and the Original JP Anime. Dubbies and Subbies really aren't that different. We share the same passion. It's still the same series. Is there changes made to he script? Yes. Is there some corny lines added sometimes? Of course. Do the characters sometimes say out of character things? Yup...But hell, the Anime is guilty of doing that in comparison to the Manga...But at the core of things...Regardless of voices and regardless of music...Don't we all still get goosebumps when Vegeta fires that Ki Blast at Cell during the Final Kamehameha Clash? There may be differences but at the core it's still the same.
Let me take a chance to say this...My preference is the Dub. But that does not mean I am ignorant or should not be taken seriously. I realize that it seems like I'm lashing out at people when nothing of the sort has even come up with me. But I'm not, I'm just very passionate about this and think the way some people are treated is very unfair.
This is where I fall in the Fandom categories...
Script: Original all the way...Sometimes I think the Dub does things better (Vegeta's Sacrifice for example). But in the end...Original.
Voice Cast: Funimation...This is how I grew up with the characters and this is how I know them. As much as I also love the JP Cast, nothing can ever replace my love for the FUNi cast.
Music: This really depends on the Era and the Movie...The Saiyan-Freeza Arcs I prefer the Original Score...I hated Nathan Johnson's music for the Re-Dub of the first 67 Episodes. Then when you get into Episopde 68 through the entire Freeza Saga I feel that Faulconer's music is just chosen at random and placed into random spots. Then Garlic Jr.-The end of Z I'm a Faulconer fanboy. GT I prefer the Original score.
Movie Music wise...Movies 1-4, Original Japanese Music. Movies 5-6, Dub. Movie 7, Original. Movie 8-9, Dub. Movie 10-11, Original. Movie 12, Dub. Movie 13, Original.

I totally agree with you Gozar, I have so much respect for Nozawa and company even though I am married to FUNimation's cast. It pain me to have to hear them deliver inaccurate dialogue. And then there's the music factor where I so enjoy watching the series in English with Kikuchi's score.
Honestly, I don't think any of us dub fans would be hear or listen to the podcast is we did not have so much respect for the original or the series as a whole.
Now dang it, I wanna see the Dragonball dub with that kickbutt narrating from Brice Armstrong!
