You kiddin me? The HFIL stuff is BACK in DBGT! THE ANTI CHRIST bawstards!

lol no seriously...actually, I think I can recall a few times when they did actually call it HELL, but it had to be in the uncut dub I guess. Although I could of sworn I heard a Hell slip in DBGT on Toonami once...

But on the whole god/reilgious issue, look at Disney's Hercules ^^ Damn sacreilgious Disney crap tainting our childrens minds with their multiple gods...

Yep. An entire ancient religous culture is apparently easier to explain away than the nutty stuff invented by a japanese comic book creator. How sad.

Er, yes it is a double standard, since what we're talking about is the amount of clothing and coverage, and not it's situation. XP

No...no it wasn't cute. Toriyama has problems, that's all. Hence double standard.

It was cute, because Goku and Kuririn weren't presented as being 12 and 13 (at least, not physically). Goku looks like Gohan did aged 6, and going by those standards, it was cute, in the same way that seeing Dexter's bum is (suppossed to be) cute and funny.

Now, if Goku looked to be the same age as Brock from Pokemon, then it might be different. But again, possibly not, since the situation would be an embarrassing one, rather than an erotic one.

But the situation is what is relevent. Goku's bum was presented in a humorous situation. It's the same as when you see his bum as an adult at various times in the series (such as in the first movie); it's for humour. Ranfan getting her kit out may have also been for humour, but it derived from an erotic startpoint. Same as with Bulma's various bits at the start of the series. There is an element of sex about it.

Context is everything. Cartoons have always had naked people for humour. Even the Powerpuff Girls were naked once, and they are girls. The situation wasn't sexual though, which was why it was allowed, and why Ranfan's thing isn't.

Oh, it was cute, because they don't look 13-14. And I don't think that Toriyama really has any sort of dirty naked children fetish thing. (At least, no more than the average Japanese male). I always took Goku being 14 at the start of the series as a humorous element designed to wind Bulma up, rather than anything else.

Except of course that he's not actually 14, he's 12, remember? he just can't count properly.

Furthermore, while there may be a double standard in the animation, the manga clearly has no such problems. Check Dragonball, volume 9, page 60 (in the SJ version, can't say for others). Yeah. The apparent problem is not a double standard so much as that it's Goku who doesn't mind going around naked, not Bulma. :P

An interesting note on the whole Heaven/Hell thing, is, if you think about it, in Hell, there is no Satan. So it's safe to say it isn't the Christian Hell, but Jigoku. Also, Heaven has no God; Kami, who is DB's representation of the deity, lives on a floating "lookout" in the sky. So this isn't the Christian version of the afterlife for sure.

BTW, DB also has deities that no other religion that I know of has, such as Korin-sama and the Kaio/Kaioshin.

In a related note, does anyone know what the white paper triangle headband thing that dead Buddhists wear is called? You know, Urameshi Yuusuke is wearing it on the front of the first Yuu Yuu Hakusho graphic novel? And the ghosts from Shaman Kingu? I can't remember its name for the life of me...

According to vol 3 of Shonen Jump, they are called hitaikakushi. And you could obviously tell it wasn't the Christian Hell due to the lack of torture, suffering, fire and brimstone.

Well, Toriyama's mixture of Christian and Buddhist ideas of the afterlife is played mostly for amusement. Heck, take, Enma-sama, the lord of the dead. A very powerful figure in Buddhist theology/mythology, definetely to be feared and respected. Yet he becomes a giant demon with a tiring desk job in Dragonball!

Nothing Toriyama put in his afterlife is offensive to anyone giving more than a passing glance.

...except perhaps Mr. Popo *cough*

I dunno, but on the issue of nakedness - I do find seeing Goku's wee-wee "cute" or "innocent"!

Thanks bunches. I remembered they'd said in there somewhere, but I was too lazy to look it up.

Erm...but...eh

He was around 13 or 14 by the time Kuririn was introduced.

No, he was 12. That's when we found out. Kuririn asked him how old he was, he said 12, someone else (Bulma?) said "I thought you were 14?", Goku says that he's a complete moron and he got his age wrong, and Kuririn is annoyed because Goku is younger than him.

They don't age at all over the first year of the series. Silly Akira mistake.

You mean "don't", surely?

That could be argued to be a cultural thing (seeing Dexter's bum is funny! Seeing his penis isn't), or possibly it's just that Toriyama (and TOEI) has/have a bit of an obsession.
