Probably the worst drawing in the Dragon Ball series ever...

Discussion regarding the entirety of the franchise in a general (meta) sense, including such aspects as: production, trends, merchandise, fan culture, and more.

Tweaker wrote:Yeah, to try and respond to the initial post in the topic, I've noticed a lot of poorly drawn bits and pieces in the series, particularly in the early episodes. I think it's just part of the natural progression that occurs when a cartoon is on the air for so long--the more you draw something, the easier it gets, and the faster you'll be able to draw it.

I mean, look at the Simpsons--the initial animation was, quite frankly, horrible. But all the years that it's been on the air has given the animators valuable experience, and they were able to shell out high quality drawings in a very short period of time. You can really do the same thing with the Dragonball series. Take the first episode of DBZ and compare it to the last; you'll find a drastic improvement when it comes to overall style and quality.

And while I'm rather new to this community, it seems Gohan looking particularly stylish in that screenshot is a bit of a meme. I'll be sure to catch on soon enough. =P
I've noticed that as well, the most when it came to the first Super Saiya-jin transfromation compared to later ones. At times, Goku's hair was compleatly out of whack that I would just find myself laughing like no tomorrow  .
BTW, you wouldnt happen to be the same Tweaker from Sonic 2 Beta/Sonic Retro would ya? I ask only because its not a common account name.

That'd be me! I didn't really expect my "reputation" (or whatever) to follow me here, but I guess it's nice to see some people recognize me. :P

Heh, I didn't know you were a Dragon Ball Z fan!

Anyways, the I'm sure that shot looks bad because it was not meant to be zoomed in like it was. Cels usually look like that when they are meant to be farther away from the screen.

Except they'd already been drawing these characters since the first episode of Dragonball. Some of the artists just outright suck. :P
For all the flack that FUNimation gets on this forum for their quote about DBZ, there's some modicum of truth to it: a 9-year-old is born every day. Or in some cases, "reborn". DBZ may be a kids' show, but it's been so close to so many hearts all over Japan, America, and quite possibly, even the world.
Well, I can't personally speak when it comes to how many different animators there were, or if there was anything specific to cause the quality shift from, say, the Cell Saga to the late Buu Saga, but what I do know is that it started looking a lot better. To me, anyway.
Don’t get me wrong when it was on, it was on and then some. But when it was off… even the worst Saiya-jin saga (or hell, even Ma Junior saga) animation looks like fucking Walt Disney next to a shitastically animated Cell saga ep, and I’m not even saying that in light of the frame that started this topic (which I’ve never noticed in over 15 years until this thread).
Well, when I said the end of the series, I meant the end of the series, not the Cell Saga. =P

But yeah, if you ask me, the Buu Saga is when things really started looking clean and defined. You compare that to the first episode of Dragonball and there's a tremendous difference, both in style and in execution. I don't consider myself an animation major, though, so my opinions are based solely on observation.

If I'm not mistaken, some bad Cell arc animation even spawned an internet meme. "Imma chargin meh lazerz" anyone?

The horrifying art through so much of the Cell games is what killed the whole saga for me. God, I'm an animator- it makes my eyes bleed.

I actually picked up one of those little frames pictures from Suncoast maybe six or seven years ago. It's a shot (I think) of Goku, Kuririn, Piccolo, and Gohan after the Genki-Dama on Freeza just hanging out.

Except it's one of those similar in-between frames. And it looks gorgeously terrible. And they actually sold the stupid thing. For realz.

I have absolutely no idea where it is. It's probably packed in a box somewhere down at my parents' place. Next time I'm there I'll have to dig it up.

We have the exact same thing hanging on the wall in the basement. Somebody gave my older brotherm them years ago- Piccolo looks especially horrible, like they forgot to do half his lines.

Id take you a picture but our camera died < < we're getting a new one.

There are actually two art styles that come up during the Cell Games that I don't like at all. The "Jewel eyes" art style, and the "Overly Cartoony and Disproportionate" style.
An example of each is:
Jewel Eyes: The episode were Cell is powering up his kamehameha the entire episodes with flashbacks, it's the episode right before the episode were cell dies.
Cartoony Horrid Style: The episode where Goku gives up and picks Gohan to go next.

Specifically Gohan vs Cell. There are two or three parts (Son dies, Gohan goes SSJ2, one point during the beam struggle) that are gorgeous, but instead of dropping down to the middle ground animation after those it immediately shifts back to utter crap. I'd pull up examples but I don't know how to screencap my dvds. Printscreen leaves me with a black void.

Cell seriously just needed to end when Son ported him. The logic that brings him back is such complete bullshit, and so much of the animation drags out and drops into shit.... it ruined it. The only redeeming thing at all in thart last part of the fight was when the others ran in to help him and Gohan started freaking the hell out.
