As well as an homage to Pilaf, it seems.

Won't see me complaining.

...I hate Ultimate Spider-Man, and how it more or less takes the original and craps all over the spirit of several aspects of it.

But I did love Dark Knight, and there's a hell of a lot of space in-between Ultimate Spider-Man and the godawful Spider-Man films and the amazing wonderment of Dark Knight in terms of changes in adaptation go. In fact, we have the terrible frame-by-frame remake of Psycho to show us that those don't work even when doing film to film.

I'm just hoping it ends up far enough from the Spider-Man side of the spectrum to be enjoyable for me.

I will most likely go out and see it for that alone and if she comes across somewhat like Rebecca Romijn as Mystique in the X-Men films I will see Dragonball 3 or 4 times.
The Saiyans are very much like the Klingons and Jem'Hadar.

I thought I was watching Mortak Kombat: Annihilation for a second.
Yamcha: Do you remember the spell to release him - do you know all the words?
Bulma: Of course! I'm not gonna pull a Frieza and screw it up!
Master Roshi: Bulma, I think Frieza failed because he wore too many clothes!

I see a lot of people looking to Lord of the Rings, Narnia, Harry Potter, and a lot of other books turned movies as to why they should have been 100% faithful with Dragonball. But I think a lot of the people just don't realize how many of the faithful transistioned story have elements that have been prominent in films for many, many, many years.

You have ogres, trolls, dragons, sorcerors, magicians, ect in films in televsion and movies since the beginnings of those mediums. And for the most part they have stayed neatly in their respective genres. Having a lot of these creatures walking around and talking and carrying on just blends in with what's going on.

Comic books and graphic novels are also easier because yo have those with a definite end or those that go on and on but with so many different story arcs that it's easy to pick and choose parts to use. Especially when it comes to the Origin Movie.

Dragonball and others like it have the worst problems with regards to a proper live action movie. It's a mix of a look of different things that one wouldn't normally find mixed together. The entire story is so long and convulted that you can't reasonable condence it down to two or three films. At the very least you would need ... lets see ... I count about eight different ways (six if we start where FOX is starting) of dividing everything from Goku and Bulma meeting til the end of Buu. Others may break it up slightly differently than me.

I haven't read the manga, so I have no first hand experience of it's pacing. But we have six protaganists and three antaganists in the first thirteen episodes. Two (technically three) more get added for the next arc, then a tourney. Then RRA, and Ten and Chiaotzu. When Z rolls around we have ten main characters with a rich and full backstory. There's jsut so much going on.

Two make matters worse is that everyone's so Z-focused, that I count it a miracle that they're starting in Dragon Ball. The support toward the product is there but not the type of dedication that Lord of the Rings got when they decided to filled the entire trilogy back to back to back. I've never read the novels myself, but I'm gonna step out on a ledge and so that they did that beause of how insanely, massive the popularity of Tolkien's works are.

With the many-genre mixing element plus the multitude of main characters, and background characters and locations trying to adapt this would prove very difficult without lossing a lot of stuff and condensing others. Reflecting the manga/anime would require so much time, enegry, resources, and faith that I don't personally believe the series itself garners. In fact, not that many franchises do as well. We as fan were hoping for the the type of treatment that Harry Potter and Narnia and Lord Of The Rings recieved, but unfortunetly these are not the same.

That's not to say that this movie will be a great movie or a poor one. It WILL be the first official Dragonball film and what THAT is we will have to wait until next year to truly find out. A 40 second teaser could not possibly convey what an entire movie will be like. A full two to three minute trailer can better reveal things.

But I believe that those who deep down inside never believed a Live Action movie was possible will not be swayed and to them nothing short of a frame by frame reflection will do. I, myself, do not subscribe to these notions. And I feel a little bad for people like that, because you may potentially miss out on something enjoyable. Or at the very least cause harm to yourself over stressing about things.

As for the Yay vs Nay issues that got a lot of LAM topics closed, personally I feel that a lot of the initial complaints were unfounded. It started silly with people saying how Chatwin doesn't "look" like Goku and that he wore jeans in one shot. Then started getting rediculious with the "He doesn't smile in this picture" complaints. The only viable complains that I saw were the High School issue, missings characters, and "yellow Piccolo". I count it all as unnecessary negativity for something that 90% of those complaining didn't care for even before it was announced that it was coming.

edit: Before I forget ... STOP SAYING THAT STREET FIGHTER AND MORTAL KOMBAT ARE BAD MOVIES!!!!!!! Atleast stop bashing Mortal Kombat, that was a good adaption.

Was I the only one who was a little disturbed by the fact that after Goku shot the Kiai at Piccolo it looked like a flamethrower shot up from the ground for the "explosion effect"?

Just curious, but that thing, with the monks, is it possible it's a rip off of this alternate filler Shenlong backstory here: http://www.kanzentai.com/guide/episode/ ... y/033.html

It could be, although I hope it has something to do with Piccolo being sealed or something.

Pretty sure it has something to do with them coming up with a way to deal with Piccolo.

The forum went down for what, a few hours?! And so I think that's it's another one of those 10 day+ periods where the forums stay down so I decide to not check it as regularly! Well now the video has been removed and I missed. :x

I don’t think anyone is bashing the first Mortal Kombat flick. I think most people are thinking of the second MK (Annihilation)… which really WAS pretty dismal (and I say this as a lifelong, dyed in the wool, MK fanatic since the original arcade game).

But I don’t think I’ve met a whole lot of people who disliked the first one.

And don’t get me started on Street Fighter. Yeah, I personally love that movie, but for all the wrong reasons. The movie cracks me up into hysterical fits of belly laughs nearly every single time I see it, except I’m laughing AT it rather than with it. Pure textbook definition of an MST3K-worthy turkey.

I’m still (perhaps naively) holding out some shred of blind optimism for a decent enough movie out of Dragonball, but I’m also hoping that if it does indeed happen to suck, that it at least sucks as spectacularly and magnificently as Street Fighter did.

I'm in the generation of fans that started with Toonami, so I totally empathize with the feeling of having "missed the party", experiencing disappointment, and wanting to experience it myself. But I can't, that's how life is. Time is a bitch. The party is over. Kageyama, Kikuchi, and Maeda are off the sauce now; Yanami almost OD'd; Yamamoto got arrested; Toriyama's not going to light trash cans on fire and hang from the chandelier anymore. We can't get the band back together, and even if we could, everyone's either old, in poor health, or calmed way the fuck down. Best we're going to get, and are getting, is a party that's almost entirely devoid of the magic that made the original one so awesome that we even want more.

Yeah the first Mortal Kombat was great to me. I wish all video game adaptions could be done that well. Still I wish we could hear what VeggetoEX's thoughts are on the footage shown. He seems to be on a higher plane of existence now with his new "Ultra Shonen" Philosophy.

My guess for this movie, is that it will be better than Mortal Kombat 1. And MK 1 was actually decent. I honestly don't know if a movie that has been made recently has been as bad as MK:A. Unless it was straight to DVD. YOu guys have to realize, now, since DVD's are so cheap, if a movie bombs at test audiences, and/or the film company has no faith in it, it goes straight to DVD, so atleast we have hope that it will be decent because at least it is being released in theaters. But that doesn't mean the occasional horrific movie doesn't make it to theaters. Anything Uwe Bowl Directs is crap, we should be happy we got a decent director.
