Well if you want to talk about genuine ethics, the right thing to do is not to get in any fights to begin with which would render Dragonball invalid. I do not think Toriyama really wanted his readers to develop a worldview from his work. For if the did the whole Kakarrot and Son Gohan situation through out the story sends the wrong message concerning the importance of hard work.Bussani wrote:Well yeah, but that doesn't stop us looking at situations like that from our point of view and calling it dirty, does it? Of course if someone brought a gun to a knife fight you wouldn't say, "Hey, that's cheating." And from a logical, survival point of view, it's a good move. That doesn't stop it from being 'sneaky' or 'dishonourable' though, even if the person in question (like Vegeta) doesn't care.Saiyan-Professor wrote:In reality, you do not approach a street fight with just your hands and then get mad when someone brings a gun (to hell with a knife), and scream ‘Hey that is not fair! Where I come from, we use our fists and we stick to the rules of the Association of Boxing Commissions!' In the neighborhood I grew up in a person with that attitude would not last very long. To those that were on Namek it was a constant life or death situation. Vegeta was after the prize (the Dragonballs) like everyone else and all is fair in love and war. There was not a Geneva Convention on planet Namek.

The Saiyans are very much like the Klingons and Jem'Hadar.
I'd clean out my bank account for Mirai Trunks to have a Big Damn Heroes moment in the Buu Saga; maybe let him help Goku in stalling Buu while present Trunks goes to grab the Dragon Radar? Something that lets him pull out an SS2, get nearly killed, and then get Mystic'd by the Elder Kaioshin.
Mystic Gohan's beatdown of Buu was epic. Now imagine him and Mystic Mirai Trunks tag-teaming it.

No, I am not saying that at all, the problem is that the criticism of the character would not be as harsh if they (the criticizers) would come to comprehend fully the mind of the character and the social and cultural context from which he came.Velasa wrote:So we can't question the fact that Vegeta's an ass because he had a rough childhood?
Don't think so. We can take that into account- but still see him as an ass.

You mean the mind of an asshole, raised within the context of a society of assholes that put "Genocide" on their business cards?Saiyan-Professor wrote:No, I am not saying that at all, the problem is that the criticism of the character would not be as harsh if they (the criticizers) would come to comprehend fully the mind of the character and the social and cultural context from which he came.Velasa wrote:So we can't question the fact that Vegeta's an ass because he had a rough childhood?

Yeah that attitude is wrong but you cannot get irate with Vegeta because he did not change his whole perspective on life immediately just because a group of aliens and a brain damaged traitorous Saiyan from a backwater planet tells him that their way is the right one. It is the same way with religion, one cannot get angry with someone just because the person refuses to convert to an alternate religion going against years of education and training just because a certain group feels that they are correct.Super Ghost Kamikaze wrote:You mean the mind of an asshole, raised within the context of a society of assholes that put "Genocide" on their business cards?Saiyan-Professor wrote:No, I am not saying that at all, the problem is that the criticism of the character would not be as harsh if they (the criticizers) would come to comprehend fully the mind of the character and the social and cultural context from which he came.Velasa wrote:So we can't question the fact that Vegeta's an ass because he had a rough childhood?

I think we tend to get angry when somebody's religion says to wipe out an entire set of people depending on a certain common trait, like race or religion or...oh, what planet you happen to live on.Saiyan-Professor wrote:Yeah that attitude is wrong but you cannot get irate with Vegeta because he did not change his whole perspective on life immediately just because a group of aliens and a brain damaged traitorous Saiyan from a backwater planet tells him that their way is the right one. I think wars start over that sort of thing.
I'm pretty sure being tolerant of somebody trying to commit genocide is taking that kind of social acceptance several steps beyond sane.

That all depends on which side you are on and whether their justification for those actions meets up to your cultural ideas and beliefs. People the world over have signed off on heinous crimes against humanity for those very reasons throughout history.Super Ghost Kamikaze wrote:I think we tend to get angry when somebody's religion says to wipe out an entire set of people depending on a certain common trait, like race or religion or...oh, what planet you happen to live on.

In a situation like that you protect yourself as the Z-Senshi did and you try to teach through example, which they did also. Vegeta himself said that Kakarrot knew that he “would learn to have a soul” (DBZ Vol. 26; P. 113). That is why Kakarrot never called him an “asshole” or whatever the DBZ equivalent would be. Vegeta made great strides by his just choosing to remain there on earth and not trying to go on a killing spree. You are to understand where that person came from and you attempt to teach them an alternative.

Yeah, Goku only let Vegeta live because the guy happened to be a great fighter, and Goku didn't want such a challenge to just disappear.
In the case of someone trying to wipe you out, unless you're selfishly(as Goku himself said) deciding to keep the challenge alive, you face no alternative but to kill back. =/

It was a dub line. When Freeza comes to Nail demanding how to access the Dragonballs, Nail remarks that the Chamber of Commerce would have that information. Freeza replies that the chamber is dead, and Nail will be soon if he continues to refuse to cooperate.

I would have loved to see King Kai actually fight, We never really see him in battle and can only guess.
I also wouldn't have minded seeing some more of King Vegeta and Prince Vegeta in the past, We never really see how strong King Vegeta actually is and I think this is something that could have been shown a little more. (An insight into the Saiyan's past.)

..Woah. Wait a second. The "Chamber of Commerce" line is from way back in the original run, before they allowed themselves to say "dead", "die", "kill", or "killed". Don't tell me they actually KEPT that afterwords.caejones wrote:It was a dub line.
