Except the anime is not being “continued”. It’s just a one off special, almost like a ten year reunion or something to that effect like a lot of other long running shows sometimes do for a lark many years after ending. It’s not like this is a brand new series or anything like that. It seems like something simply made to be harmless fun and classic Toriyama gag shenanigans, nothing more. You make it sound like it’s the next GT or something.

And frankly, if that trailer did anything for me, it only made me look forward to the new special that much more instead.
Yeah, GT is unforgivable. I lost all interest in the series for about a year or two after I saw GT.
Seeing GT made me more of a fan.

I see what Vegetto EX-sama said about movie threads having the same results. There is only so much we can talk about before these threads degenerate into the same old argument. With that being said, trailer and all, I'm still looking foward to seeing the movie.
The series doesn't start with the arrival of Raditz. Stop being lazy and watch Dragonball.

And that's what really matters, I think deep down we're all looking forward to it no matter how much we may flame it here.

Y'know, it's the strangest thing! My friend was all "we should watch some Dragon Ball" and he put in these DVDs, right? And I was expecting like Goku to be all grins and jokes all over the place, you know? But there were these monsters killing people, and this demon guy named Piccolo trying to take over, and Goku didn't look too happy about it. I'm not sure what crazy fan-parody my friend had his hands on, but it blew my mind!
Dude. I realize the US movie is kinda-sorta based on the "Piccolo Daimaiô" part. I was simply making fun of that Youtube guy's arguments, there.
I take it you didn't watch that video, and that certainly makes you a happier man...

Yes. Unique and fresh. That's what I said, and I mean it. Got a problem with it?

Er.

I'm still actually extremely iffy on that. I could go either way, but there is a signifigant possibility that I won't go see the film.

That's not exactly a magical answer, you know...
"I'm entitled to my opinion! That means there's no need to discuss it!"
Bleh.
Yes. Unique and fresh. That's what I said, and I mean it.
Putting the characters in highschool? Having the main character be unpopular? Bullied by jocks? Later involved with the popular chick? Who used to date one of the jocks (if I keep track of this thing, and maybe I don't)? Giving the lead (I think?) female character twin guns so she can "kick ass"? Slow motion wire-fu, complete with many, many backflips? A prophecy out of a bad Tolkien fanfiction? An eclipse? A shapeshifting female right hand for the main bad guy? Leather, leather, leather?

Fresh? Unique?

...No, really.

I still haven't seen some of the actual Dragonball movies, the animated ones. It doesn't seem ridiculous to me that I'll pass up the live action film.

Also, "lol sure" is the kind of response that just smells like flamebait. Please try to sound less horribly snarky so that we won't get all movie threads ever locked. It's not polite.

Well it's all of that plus 7 magic Dragon Balls, Goku being trained by his Grandpa Gohan, Bulma meeting Goku in the wilderness, Bulma tries to kill Goku, They team and go on a world wide adventure searching for the Dragon Balls, Goku being trained by Master Roshi, Meeting Yamcha in the Dessert, Piccolo being sealed by Master Mutaito, Piccolo wanting the Dragon Balls to wish his youth back, Chi-Chi marries Goku, Master Roshi dies trying to seal Piccolo, and Goku defeats Piccolo and saves the world. Yup. All of that occurred one way or another in the manga and its suppose to happen in the movie. Just tossing that into the mix.

We were talking about the movie's take, i.e. the things they've changed. And my point was that Fox's input, their "twist", as JAPPO put it, isn't exactly fresh nor unique.

Agreed with CT, and that's what I was getting at.

And Olivier, no I didn't see the video. It sounds like I may want to go ahead and keep it that way lol.

On the combat... has anyone seen Storm Riders? I think that's the closest I've seen to live-action DB-esque combat, personally.
To show my appreciation, I'll only beat them half to death.

@ Olivier Hague: Yeah but maybe he meant that those "fresh" and "unique" elements were never implemented in a Dragon Ball story. So for Dragon Ball's story the High School, Eclipse, and all that other stuff is a fresh and unique take on the Dragon Ball story?

I'd say Shaolin Soccer or Kung Fu Hustle, myself... That's what comes to mind right now, anyway.

Considering they're tired clichés otherwise, maybe that was for the best...

*Shrugs shoulders* Maybe those elements won't be a predictable and cliched as we think they are. :?

Um, I happen to think changing it so you need to wait for an eclipse to become an Oozaru is a very fresh idea.

The moon? SERIOUSLY? He would become an Oozaru every night!! That part of the anime was absolutely stupid. I'm glad they changed it.

High school sounds very goofy. So goofy that it sounds like something Akira Toriyama would have made, say.... like... great saiyaman?

I also like Piccolo's new look and I don't care if you don't. My opinion.

I also happen to think giving the females something to do is much better than the sexist portrayal in the anime.

The anime isn't without its faults. If you're going to bash the movie, I should be allowed to bash the anime. In fact I hated everything past Freeza.

I can see the reviews now...

"...[the film] is loosely based on a Japanese comic and animated series franchise loosely based on the Chinese legend of the Monkey King. Personally, I don't see it."

Actually, that might be my review.

Somewhere along the line I think you forgot it's a comic for little boys written by a guy who has made his [presumable] fortune telling potty jokes.

Let me get this straight then... you want the movie to be all potty jokes? I just don't know what you people want. I just don't know.

Except that only one of those two look to actually have any effect on the story. And unless I've missed something we don't actually have a concrete idea just what the eclipse is relevant to; whether it's Movie-Ozaru, or Piccolo's release, or using the DragonBalls. We probably won't know for sure until the movie comes out. Odds are, it has to do with Piccolo.

Where is it said that the Oozaru is brought on by the eclipse? Source please. But it wasn't JUST the moon, it was the FULL moon, and that was pretty clearly established. So ONCE A MONTH, basically.

High School would work for Great Saiyaman. I don't think, so much, it would work for Goku. A lot of the fun of Goku, I think, is that he's extremely socially inept from living in the woods.

I'm not sure on the new Piccolo myself. I don't hate or like it really, yet.

I'm fine with the sexist portrayal, personally. To shoehorn a character into having a fighting presence when they DON'T seems odd to me. Bulma wasn't portrayed in a sexist light in the manga, far from it. She was cunning and intelligent. But she WAS weak, so she fooled this superstrong kid into protecting her.

And she was still dealing with the normal dangers of the Dragonball world, bandits and dinosaurs and the like, before she met Goku.
