Huh, good question. Now that you mention it, Julian did a whole romanization / translation of that entire dialogue bit over on the "Dub Mistakes" page of the "Rumor Guide". You're right; there's no mention of the word "gland" in there, but it's accurate enough that it kinda makes sense and I don't see too much of a problem with it.
Saiyan wrote:About Gohan's tail..doesn't Goku's tail grow back suddenly when he first fights Giran or something in one of the Budokais?
You're right; it grows back out of nowhere in chapter 40 when Giran's got him caught up in that gummy-wrap. I guess I'm a little more forgiving of Toriyama in those earlier parts of the series. I suppose this does indeed set precedent for what happens with Gohan, but I maintain that it's a real shitty & far-too-convenient plot device.

Why am I having such a problem remembering these things? Argh.
Herms wrote:They also said something about Vegeta making a “bad joke about being the one to bury them” or something like that, and I don’t remember that at all. Is that another thing Viz added in, or is my memory just failing me (ugh…I hate not being able to check my manga...)?
Oh, I didn't quite mean that literally. He just kinda opens his eyes and is all "NYAH NYAH I'MA GUNNA KILL ***YOU*** INSTEAD HAHAHA!!!"

You're probably less forgiving of the magical tail regeneration in this volume, because it was used immediately, unlike in the 21st Tenkaichi Budokai.

Oh, something I forgot to put in earlier: One of the reasons I don't quite like Vegeta's explanation of the Oozaru transformation is that he really only explains half of it. I mean, he basically goes "Blah blah blah zeno blah blah bruits wave blah blah science blah blhah setting off a reaction in our tail, which makes us suddenly turn into giant monkeys tens of times our normal size!" So where's the explanation for all that? Where does the fur come from, what makes their face change, where does all the extra body mass come from? That's what I want to know.

Not to mention, why do they actually turn into monkeys in the first place? That's not really a normal thing. I know they've got the whole "monkey" theme going on, but it's not like Piccolo transforms into a giant snail when he looks at the full moon or anything.

But I guess I don't really want them to explain all that, because it'd get pretty boring. Though I think that takes it back to the main reason I don't like it, which you mentioned in the podcast: DragonBall is, except for this one speech, entirely devoid of any attempt at using pseudo-science to explain any of the events or things shown. Mike mentioned that Vegeta's speech was needed to establish Oozaru in the context of the Saiyans rather than in the mystical and inexplicable context it'd been put in during Goku's youth, but I don't think that stops the speech from sticking out like a sore thumb.

Awesome episode. Gotta love that volume of the manga. One of my absolute favourites, and I agree with pretty much all of your points.

Now, we have a podcast break. Lame. What kind of excuse is...a wedding? Seriously

Have fun guys. I think we could survive for a couple of weeks. I still have the new episode of VG Convos to listen to.

When you started talking about Arrested Developement I thought you were talking about the show, and when Geoff starts saying "Mr.-" I was thinking "MR. F!"

I thought Infinite World would be just like Rise of a Ninja and to be honest, that shot of Piccolo dodging the Freeza beams and Tenshinhan kikoho'ing Cell's ass reminded me of the dodging the Jutsu thingy Negi does.

For some reason, I thought this episode would end up being pretty boring (I mean, we're at 20 manga reviews now) but it was still as interesting as the other ones have been.
Kunzait_83 wrote:Another great moment for the anime's animation department was when Vegeta sent that Ki barrage at Gohan during their fight, as well as the utterly wonderful reproduction of the "!!" moment when Vegeta first sees the Genki Dama bearing down on him from behind.
Ah, that had to have been the best episode of that entire saga. I agree entirely with the way they handled when Gohan was being fired at as well as the "!!" moment with Vegeta. We don't get enough throwbacks to the manga in terms of stuff like speech (or I guess in this case, exclamation) bubbles showing up randomly. I kinda wish they would have done more things like that just to remind us that the series was a manga beforehand. Random stuff like the Tori-bot breaking the fourth wall would have been awesome. I know we catch glimpses of him a handful of times, but it wasn't enough for me. I need more!
caejones wrote:It's kinda funny, really. In the Nappa fight, only Goku could do anything (Kuririn and Gohan got a couple hits in, I guess...), while in the Vegeta fight, it's teamwork all the way other than Goku and Vegeta roughing each other up a bit at the start.
Teamwork was always a good thing in a series that doesn't really use that point all that much.

As for the whole scientific explanation, I didn't really mind how Vegeta explained things. It covered it, but not to the point that I was suddenly taken out of the story and just got bored of things, like other certain current shonen.

I've never been that big on Meri's Top 5 panels, but I have enjoyed her other top lists.

Jeff's role in these review episodes is really interesting. I wish I had someone like you guys to give me the entire manga experience, doing stuff like comparing the manga to the anime. Also listening to Jeff's anticipation of the golden hair reminds me just how many bits and pieces Jeff has to work with, what with him actually knowing a couple future manga events. I wasn't that old when I first got into the series, since I have absolutely no recollection of anticipating just when I would see suchandsuch transformation. I think I was the kind of kid that just watched things and didn't predict when other things would happen. I also remember looking up a bunch of plot points online, so that probably had a role in things, too.

So yeah, good episode this time around. Enjoy all that time off from the podcast with the whole marriage thing :D.

I actually loved Meri's top 5 panels. Not so much the list of them, even, but just the humor that went into saying what they were.

I'd love to see more Top 5 Panels, personally. In fact, it's the other Top 5 lists that sometimes got me bored.

...I like pretty pictures.

I agree, the !! looks so good in the Anime and Manga.

I love the part in the fight where Vegeta is getting his ass kicked into all holy hell! Vegeta loses his "Pride," if you wanna call it that. His anger just so entertaining! He can't hit Goku, and it just ticks him off that much more. Fortunately for Goku, Vegeta doesn't realize the strain the Kaio-Ken is really putting on Goku! It amazes me, even four or five years after seeing those episodes for the first time, how anyone survived that crazy battle!
Excluding the Z-Warriors vs. Cell and his children (Cell Jr.'s) , there really isn't a large scale/insane battle like the fight with the Saiyajins. It is just my opinion. Your opinion could be different.
Gohan: "You're a Buddhist." Kuririn: "A hungry Buddhist!"

I liked that tidbit Viz added in about the moonlight setting off a reaction in a gland in their tails. It's about the one of Viz-created lines I can think of that I actually like...

Wish it was said in the original.

Pretty good episode.
I always think that it would have been pretty cool if Vegeta and Gohan transformed at the same time, but you know, whatever.
Although the anime had that one filler transformation, and I think that actually set a 6 month period for Gohan's tail growing back, which of course would mean the battle with Vegeta would be happening 6 months after that.
But you know, it still does come out of nowhere in the manga.

songs of the podcast

Post by dracostarhome » Fri Oct 24, 2008 1:00 pm

I like how you toss in songs and sound clips from the anime and games into the podcast. Unfortunate though as I haven't had the opportunity of listening to ALL of the podcast yet... I've listened to 1-45 and then 130-current, so I'm working my way around... seeing as how I only discovered this website about a month or so ago... ... NEwayz...

What song was that at the end of the podcast? The thing about the Kamehameha?

please and thank you for any help you can provide ^_^

I thought the song was kawaii and am dying to know more... ^_^

podcast... tale of tails

Post by dracostarhome » Fri Oct 24, 2008 1:09 pm

I think that since Goku himself had his own tail grown and regrown multiple times as well as several transformations to the mighty Oozaru, that it was pretty awesome to have Gohan do the same.

Although, I wish that all the demi-Saiya-jins could have transformed... that would have been rather amusing to see all three boys running amuck in the Oozaru form. XD

I do on one level agree though, the transformation of Vegeta followed by Gohans own transformation was a bit much at once, although it was quite amusing though that Vegeta was defeated because some big creature came along and laiyed on him.

Very amused by FUNI trying to cloth scrap Gohans butt with Vegeta's uniform....

I've been mooned multiple times by my sister, so seeing a kid's butt on a cartoon is not gonna bother me..

I FINALLY got around to listening to the latest podcast. Fantastic job, as always.

Anyway, as I was reading through this thread I saw mention of people being "sick" of the manga review. I couldn't disagree more.

For those of us who read through DB and DBZ years ago, the discussion serves as a nice trip down memory lane. Also, its great to hear from someone who isn't familiar with the material; I've often said I wish I had never read the manga, just so I could read it again for the first time (I think the same thing was said on a recent podcast...). It's nice to live vicariously through an outsider, and the reviews serve to rekindle my passion for the material. Keep up the great work.

They only got a quick mention in the newest episode, but Infinite World and Origins both look pretty great. There have been rumors circulating that one or both may not make release date (Nov. 4). Can anyone confirm or deny this?

And speaking of consumer products, has anyone else picked up any of the new Bandai toys? The articulated action figures are just ok, but the little statues with the bases are very nicely sculpted and look great. The catch is that some of them are Wal-Mart exclusives, so if you want them, you've got to go to a Wal-Mart... it might not be worth it.

Lastly, I promised the board I'd post pics of my DBZ sleeve when it was finished and healed. It now lives up to both of those qualifications, so I'll get the pics up as soon as I possibly can.

I kinda mentioned this already, but this makes me want to reiterate...
... As I am physically incapable of reading the manga myself, not quite good enough at Japanese to understand the original version of the anime (I don't particularly like having people read the subs aloud over the dialogue... :( ), I rather apreciate the "Manga Review of Awesomeness" for providing such a perspective.
(Even when I could see well enough to be disconcerted by the graphics querks with Ultimate Battle 22, I couldn't have read the manga on my own (though my dad did read the Raditz fight to me at one point...), and reading subs would have taken quite some time (I'd probably have given up after a while. ^^ ).)

So yeah, what the Daizex-gang does here is pretty swift. :D

(I suppose I have to admit that I've gone from trying to see how long it'd take internet people to figure out I can't see worth crap to trying to use it in a noticeable way. but noone really cares, so it all works out...)

^^^ I never even THOUGHT of sickness being a reason for the appreciation of the manga review, but now that I've thought about it, it makes absolute perfect sense.

It isn't anywhere near the same thing, but about two years ago I worked at a private school that was mainly for kids with dyslexia and other learning related issues of varying severity. They were a bit young for the Dragonball thing (about fifth grade), but I could see a few of them becoming fans in the future.

All of them were readers to a certain degree, and most of them will grow up and live 100% normal lives, but a few never will. And if they were to become fans, the manga review would no doubt be something they would get a lot out of.

So... right there... another, more valid reason for keeping it going besides, "Hey, jerk, I like it!" You never relize what you take for granted until someone spells it out for you... keep fighting the good fight!
