Tenshinhan is not a human?

Discussion, generally of an in-universe nature, regarding any aspect of the franchise (including movies, spin-offs, etc.) such as: techniques, character relationships, internal back-history, its universe, and more.

Tenshinhan is not a human?

Post by Yamcha_krillin » Mon Nov 03, 2008 10:40 am

Is this true?

I saw a video online where it says that in the Daizenshu it's was stated that Tien is not a human.

He's human. Even the Saiyans are human.
He descends from three-eyed aliens, that's all.

How does that even make sense? They are all humanoid but not human.

It makes sense in the context of Dragon Ball, where humans can be found on other planets.
Humans/ningen != Earthlings/Chikyûjin

Basically, in DragonBall ningen, the Japanese word for "human", is used to describe all humanoid, mortal beings. So for instance the Saiyans are described as ningen by the themselves and others. It has nothing to do with what planet anyone is from. Then chikyuujin/Earthling is used to describe people from Earth. Daizenshuu 4 and 7 say Tenshinhan is descended from aliens, but still classify him as an Earthling, presumably because he's so distantly descended that he's mostly an Earthling.

I wonder what their reason for that was. Would it not make more sense to at least imply he's descended from the monster clan of DB-Earth Humans?

Actually, it's from one of the Daizenshuu. The Season Set booklet(s) may have listed it as well.

One of the Sparking!/Budokai Tenkaichi games also mentions it.

It's a weird tidbit to have floating out there. I'm not particularly fond of it, but there you go.

I wonder if it was mentioned in a Weekly Jump article or something.

If we're gonna talk about Tennshinhan not being human, we should bring up his partner in crime Chaozu. What does the Daizenshuu say about him and his origins?

That he's a circus reject. And have you ever wondered what him and Tenshinhan do together? Well, that's why Chaozu is white...

Sorry, i couldn't resist.

Nothing that we don't already know (for daizenshuu 7, at least). I really wish the daizenshuu explained that they were monsters (as the breakdown of people on Earth is animals, humans and monsters). Then everything would be simple instead of random.

Or, in Chaozu's case, creepy as all fuck. I swear, he's like the collectible Chinese doll equivalent of Chucky!

Yeah, it says it in the Season Set booklet.

But oddly enough they took it from the Daizenshuu.

Anyway, Tenshinhan is indeed human. The only thing in question is his ancestry. To this I say, why not? Tenshinhan having three eyed alien ancestors isn't much of a stretch of internal logic.

Yep, the season set booklets say that too, and that is probably the thing I am most impressed about regarding the season sets as a whole.

Nope! I think it's cool that gave us that little bit, but it only makes us wonder more about Chaozu and everyone else's heritage. I guess it's saying something when they can come up with an ancestry for a three eyed guy who can grow extra limbs but they can't come up with anything for Chaozu. :P

And here's a cool little pagethat I just had to link to. It is about Tenshinhan's race and heritage and uses completely canonical sources and information! It is a part of the coolest Tien shrine ever: Three's the Charm.

I guess they "assumed" it was obvious enough that Chaozu might have been based off a Kyonshi.

Which would make Tenshinhan a child molester, since for some fucked up reason Chaozu never grew up.

Admit it, I said something about your favorite character that you didn't like. I get it.
