I can't even bear to walk by the manga section in the bookstore I work at because of the ridiculous number of Naruto volumes. (I have a bad history with Naruto; I don't like to talk about it.)

My store has most of Dragon Ball Z, one of the VizBig volumes, very little Dragon Ball, and a couple copies of the Daizenshuu.
With One Piece...I wanna say we have one copy of almost all of them; maybe 2 copies of a couple volumes.
We have only 3 volumes of Dr. Slump. (Which is why I have to buy my Dr. Slump at either B. Dalton or Borders).

The only reason I was buying their OP was in hopes that if the number of books sold for it went up, they might ease up on the stupid four month wait between releases.

Looks like I was wrong.

With a few exceptions, all of the color chapters switch from a full color palette in the opening pages to using a limited color palette. So certain color substitutions are made, like Piccolo being gray instead of green, or in this case Bulma's hair being red instead of purple.

Nope. They still have 2 more volumes to go. >_<

17 comes out in January; and if the 3 to 4 month wait for that persists, 18 won't be out til April or May.

Hell, I've only seen one copy of the VizBig releases of DB and DBZ each at just about every bookstore I've gone to. Have yet to even see the Daizenshuu. :?

Sadly, Naruto has an incredibly large modern fanbase, so VIZ are simply going where the most money is. That said, I hate Naruto and the fact that they can translate 11 volumes in three months makes me wonder what the hell they are doing with all their other manga releases.
I want my One Piece/Bleach/Dr. Slump/Fullmetal Alchemist!!! Death to Naruto!!!!

*Ahem*...

Anyways, on topic, thanks for this review Tanooki Kuribo. Just wondering, could you please tell me which chapters in the DB and DBZ volumes are actually in colour? I've already got the first DB and DBZ VIZBIG volumes and I don't wanna buy this if I've already got all the colour chapters which this does. Thanks in advance :D

I flipped through my DBZ VizBig 1, and there's nothing missing in the first volume. The only color chapter is the one with Goku and Raditz' arrivals at Kame House, and the color is fully intact. So for DBZ, you're set.

DragonBall VizBig 1, however, has a lot missing in the first volume's worth. A whole three subsequent chapters, from Umigame's introduction up to entering Oolong's village, have all been turned from color to grayscale. So if like me, you want these for your color chapter fix, just grab the DB one.

Great! Thanks a lot for the info SSJ Kaboom. I'll take care of that when I get $20. I can't figure out why VIZ didn't put all the colour pages in the VIZBIG. I guess I can always hope that it means they're planning an English Kanzenban release, and just not including all the colour pages with the VIZBIG's so that they can milk the fans for even more money...
Well, it is VIZ.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding you here, but the first DBZ VIZBIG volume has the first chapter of Goku and Vegeta's fight printed in grayscale.

Sorry, I meant "first volume's worth," as in the chapters from the first basic graphic novel/tankobon that the CE's are now reprinting. Goku vs Vegeta was from Volume 3. I should have been more clear.

You have my sympathies. I've had to wait 6 or 7 months between Tenchi volumes a while back and it is absolutely brutal.

This just makes Viz's Naruto bias look even more despicable.

Heh, Tenchi. Chuquita, you do know the un-flopped new releases are censored right? At least the cover of a particular volume is... "The Search for More Money" or whatever. I'd hunt down the original, bigger, flopped one; at least for that.

Wow, VIZ, wow.
For all the flack that FUNimation gets on this forum for their quote about DBZ, there's some modicum of truth to it: a 9-year-old is born every day. Or in some cases, "reborn". DBZ may be a kids' show, but it's been so close to so many hearts all over Japan, America, and quite possibly, even the world.
Actually, there's a reason for those delays. Viz is extremely close to the Japanese version, and thus has to slow down production in order to allow more stuff to come out. I believed Japan's on volume 20 or 21.

That might work for the current serilaizations in Jump, but not for ones that ended ((or started)) more than 20 years ago. I mean, why do they take 5 months to release one Dr. Slump volume?!

And why they don't do something for One Piece just like they did to Naruto one year ago for an example?! It might help that FUNimation is dubbing the Anime and it will make it more populer than before.

It'd be a Hell if they licensed KochiKame or any long-running series and release a volume evey 5 months!! ((the manga is currently at 161 volumes, and it's still ongoing))

Wow, VIZ, wow.

I am painfully aware. :(
I have half of Tenchi in flopped, yet uncensored format and the other half unflopped and censored. >_O

I'd love to know where Hitoshi Okuda disappeared to after he finished Tenchi though; I really like his work and he seems to have vanished off the face of the Earth. If he were to produce a new manga series I might check it out.

Because One Piece isn't about angsty teens who use "exotic-sounding" ninja techniques.

Also, Viz only has the rights to One Piece's manga, not its anime; meaning by promoting it, it stands to gain less money than it would by promoting series it holds both the manga and anime license to (like Naruto, Bleach, and Death Note).

And they have to decide what to censore, because FMA gets its crucifications gone & turned to rocks.

Wasn't that the only thing Viz edited in FMA though? I don't really find the edit as problematic as the stuff done to DB. Heck, I didn't even know that was an edit til I read about it online.

Doesn't stop them from advertising from advertising the uncut DVDs or Unlimited Adventure, actually. o_o

Just wondering, could you please tell me which chapters in the DB and DBZ volumes are actually in co lour?
Specifically, DragonBall Z pages 22 - 36 are in color which is all of chapter 2. Those are the only chapters that happen to be in color, there isn't any black and white color pages (if that even makes sence to you) like there was in the VIZ BIG's. DragonBall's color pages are 1 - 38 that would be chapter 1 untill the first page of the second chapter. And pages 52 - 82 which is chapter 3 till Goku gets the axe to the head in chapter 5.

On the note of color pages... VIz has thrown in random color pages before and after the contents page and the title page gallery.

My local store had the DBZ one, but I wasn't going to pay 40 bucks (I know, it's ridiculous) for something I already own.
