No, GT tried being both Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z at the same time without Toriyama to give them a story to work with.

This isn't supposed to be an action-heavy short. Considering this is supposed to be Dragon Ball, there isn't supposed to be much of any sense to be made. And obviously the villains are supposed to be corny. We've seen enough of villains being stronger than the heroes than we have of new villains being WEAKER than the heroes.

I personally don't see any point in the special then. What the hell is the point if it makes no sense and purposely had crappy villains? I was excited for it, and I'm not trying to shoot it down just because. I was into the idea. I liked the thought of another chance to see the characters. But my God, seriously, what exactly was the point of it? Just a boring story that scarred the Dragon Ball franchise even more? I mean between GT and the upcoming live action movie, I would think that Dragon Ball has suffered enough. But nope. Gotta throw in a random crappy special in there.

I guess I'm barking in the dark because people will like it for a few reasons. One, it's Dragon Ball. Two, I think (so don't jump all over me if I'm wrong) that it had Akira Toriyama's collaboration, so magically it's GOTTA be great. Three, it "ignores" GT, which it really doesn't, just doesn't get to it yet, but okay. Four, It's like a typical Anime now. I can't explain it, but to me, DBZ wasn't just like any other Anime. I dislike most Anime. I only like a few. This felt like another random Anime show. And I hate that.

All I know is if FUNimation decided to make this as a first FUNimation original, people would be tearing it down and not giving it a leg to stand on.

This special was obviously not intended for you. The entire point of this special was to please the hardcore fans of the series. You clearly missed every single joke and reference thrown into this thoughtfully constructed film. I was laughing all the way through and on the edge of my seat with excitement at all the fan service present. It felt like Christmas morning; there is no other way to explain it. I am STILL finding new and interesting things in this special even though I have already watched it in its entirety. Everyone who worked on it did a phenomenal job.

I am a hardcore fan of the series. But the series I know was an action series with martial arts. Not a family of farmers who goes out to eat at some random party where they run into two dorky villains and easily whoop them.

Yeah. The series never had moments like Majin Buu pulling out a Porta Potty and taking a huge dump for comedic effect.

Or Goku agreeing to give an old man dirty photos of Bulma and having Vegeta yell at him.

Or moments where the characters just chill and something as simple as Krillin throwing a rock at Goku because he thinks he is "ultra aware of his surroundings" because he is a SSJ now happens for the fun of it.

You don't get Dragon Ball AT ALL do you? It had action in it... you couldn't possibly put a serious big drama into 35 minutes. That's why the ones in the series last for so many episodes... it builds tension and dramatic effect. It develops characters.

This was about fan service. This was about reliving the character interaction moments that make you care about them... because the action doesn't mean crap without the characters.

Yes it had those moments, but those moments didn't drive the entire storyline. What are you talking about? It's like saying, "you don't understand Superman do you? You don't need to have super powers or villains. Because you could have an entire 10 series comic of him just sitting at his desk writing a newspaper story"

I like how you're trying to prove that I"m not a real fan or something. Congratulations. You're amused by little pointless story arcs like farming and random meals in a random hotel with a random character and random villains with zero action. But that's not what I've come to know and love. The main focus of DBZ wasn't to have this whole, "oh lets just sit back and relax and laugh for 30 minutes" feel. Maybe Dragon Ball was comedy and small moments like that, but it still had martial arts. DBZ took it to the next level. Everything in DBZ was epic. The world was on the line, the universe was on the line. This special had no weight on it. It had no pressure. It had no action. And therefore, had no entertainment for ME. I'm not telling you not to like it, am I?

So what did you really expect though? Some really cool drawn enemy to pop up out of nowhere and wreak havoc for 10 minutes with Piccolo popping up to save Gohan and then Vegeta gets beaten up in seconds and Goku beats him with a Genki Dama or Kamehameha? How would that really be any fun? Haven't we seen enough of that anyway?

The point of this special is to see what the characters are up to. To see Goku and Vegeta fighting between one another. For nostalgic reasons. For fan service.

This was just for fun. There was not enough time to develop any SERIOUS storyline and it really pay off.

BTW. It's not a "DBZ" special. It's a "DB" special as the title suggests. DBZ is still technically part of the same storyline... the manga was just called DB ya know.

But it's not REALLY what the characters have been up to, seeing as it takes place BEFORE the last episode of DBZ.

You're completely missing the point of this special. Which makes me wonder how you can be a DB fan and not like it. But anyway...

yeah it's to see what they were up to between defeating buu and the last episode...

You are missing my point that it's about being reunited with the characters. You obviously must not care too much about them if this bored you. You just want them to blow stuff up. What kind of payoff would that be after 11 years if they didn't explored the characters and just had a fight with no substance. It's like when Kurt Cobain sang about how his fans just liked all his pretty songs... but they don't know what they mean.

I really hated the animation. Some of it looked good, but damn there were moments where it looked like a Flash game online.

Whoa. Maybe I would've cared if it stayed true to the characters. Goku a farmer? Vegeta and Goku having a competition about who can eat the most? Yeah, surely Vegeta wanted to eat more than Goku all these years. I didn't feel like the essence of the characters was captured. It didn't feel like the same characters. Gohan on a computer? The failed fusion? The WILLING spli of the failed fusion? It didn't feel like DBZ to me. It felt like a random anime. It felt like a dumb side story. It's not only about the action. But the action would've helped.

I thought the animation looked terrific. It doesn't look like Flash... flash doesn't look this good.

How is a failed fusion not staying true to the characters? ... how is Chi Chi making Goku grow some radishes not in character... she makes him do a lot of things.

How is Vegeta and Goku fighting over everything different? Vegeta mellowed out since he accepted Goku was better at the end of Buu. He is still quite angry and closed off... it's no different than the banter between them during th Buu arc inside Buu or whatever. They find SOMETHING to compete at each other against now that Goku is around all the time again.

Gohan using a computer is out of character? He can't use a computer? He used a wrist watch to talk to Videl.

As I was saying, it didn't feel like the characters to me. Surely, all of the decisions could be made by picking radishes out of Goku's garden. Surely Gohan and Videl's relationship reflects typical teenage behavior by instant messaging one another... Oh wait, but Gohan didn't have a computer... Oh but who cares? Surely Vegeta can be Goku's little rival buddy. "Haha Kakkarot! I can eat more than you!" "Oh no you can't!" Surely Piccolo could just sit on the sidelines with his arms crossed and watch a fight without saying anything. "Hey lets turn into fusion! Uh oh! We screwed up! Yay! Lets diffuse at will and do it again!" And Chi-Chi and Bulma could just sit back and watch it like it's nothing. And all of the characters, including King Kai and Bubbles and Gregory could just sit in chairs while the others are away doing battle, not even moving, just sitting around with blank looks on their faces. And Krillin and Yamcha, who gave up on fighting, SURELY would have their fighting uniform UNDER their civilian clothes. I mean after all, it's not like they gave up training. Krillin, the action hero. "Kienzan! Ha! I jumped right into that one!"

The action might've helped it. Wouldn't hurt.

All those characters were there because it was the first time in 11 years they were making an animated Dragon Ball special and they knew people would like to see them there. They couldn't give EVERY single character a speaking part.

Whose to say krillin and Yamcha didn't secretly miss fighting and pick it back up for a little while or something...?? Besides that wasn't the point, they knew people would like to see those characters contribute.

They can diffuse at will because they've learned how. They mention that Goku never told them how in the Buu saga but they've obviously figured it out by now. Who cares anyway? That's not a big deal.

You must not have a sense of humor if you didn't think the rivalry between Goku and Vegeta was funny.

Besides man, I'm sure that Toriyama has been out of GOOD ideas for the series for awhile... which is why it doesn't continue. So he mainly parodies it these days.... Whahaha no ha for example.

See? Now you're just trying to defend it. You're making lots of assumptions about the characters. AND that thing about diffusing...yeah, you can't learn it. If they could diffuse, and Goku would know how, then in the movie and GT they would've diffused. But oh wait, those can't possibly be canon, so how dare I bring it up?

I'm sorry, but people will be fans and defend it tooth and nail because Akira Toriyama had something to do with it. That's fine. But to say that I'm not a "real fan" over it? That's going too far. Surely I can't be a real fan. Spending thousands of dollars on Dragon Ball related merchandise, owning all of the series, owning the video games and a few toys. Surely I'm not a real fan. Because I didn't like the poorly made short special that doesn't even feel like it's part of the show. I take offense to that. I spent the majority of my childhood obsessing over this show. And this means I'm not a fan? That's messed up. Even if Dende was my favorite character and my favorite arc was Garlic Jr., I'd still be a fan in some fashion. And what the show means to me, was not reflected by the special. To different people, the show means different things.

Sure you can be a fan. I apologize, I forget how touchy people can get with that comment. Yeah you can not like the special, but I think you're missing a large part of what DB is if you really think it was just stupid.

It wasn't poorly made by any stretch of the imagination.

It didn't live up to it in my opinion. It didn't capture the feel of the series. Even the movies captured that feeling, but this special didn't. At least not for me. I felt it was just so random. It looks like a fanfic come to life.

I wouldn't be touchy about that comment if the majority of my childhood didn't revolve around obsessing over it and if I didn't spend thousands of dollars on it. If it was just something I watched every now and then, I wouldn't care.

What exactly is the "feel" of the series to you?, I'm interested to know because to me that special was a mix of everything Dragonball is, comedy action and adventure, it sounds like all you want is something in the same vain as the other 13 movies, a generic big super powerful villain showing up, laughing, beating everyone up and then being killed in one of three ways, a super powered punch, a Genki Dama, or a Kamehameha.

TheGreatness25 wrote:I'm going to get a lot of flak for this one, but I didn't like the special one bit. I felt that the entire thing could've been rewritten and redesigned. Sometimes, the animation looked terrible. And there were lots of plot holes.

1) Outfits: What was up with Goku and Vegeta's outfits? They were wearing things that they haven't worn in "years". Like Goku's gi from before the fight with Vegeta (with the Turtle emblem on the back). Vegeta was wearing something that he wore long before Majin Buu. So if I would change something for starters, it would be that right there. And it's not like their more recent outfits were made by TOEI. They were straight out of the Manga.

2) Tarble: ... What? How is that possible? How old is this kid? He looks like a teenager. He doesn't look any older than Gohan did during the Cell Saga. And if memory serves me correctly, planet Vegeta blew up (and thusly King Vegeta was killed) when Vegeta was at the ripe old age of 5 (according to the official timeline). So yeah, that makes absolutely ZERO sense. I'd either make him older, or make him a character more detached from Vegeta. Or do SOMETHING. Oh yeah, and I'd take King Kai, Bubbles, and Gregory's mysterious out-of-nowhere appearance out.

3) Villain(s): One word: corny. Redesign. Give them different powers.

I thought the special was boring. Had minimal action. Made no sense. Had crappy villains. And yet it survived simply because it had Dragon Ball in the title. I understand that it was supposed to be a fun little story with those characters that so many people love, but God damn, so was GT.
I agree, this special is really bad.
The villains suck, the story is laughable even the line art is different from the manga and personally i hate to see them so slim.

1) Longer movie to allow for a flashback explanation of Tarble's existence and the fact that he somehow survived all these years.

1b) If not a longer bg for Tarble, then I'd have prefered it if it were about Onio, who stayed on the planet he was sent to rather than return to planet Vegeta. Reason: because he'd be the strongest on that planet.

2) Tenshinhan and Chaozu getting cameos. Chaozu uses his telekinesis to save Lunch from debris, but it's too heavy and falls anyway. They get saved by a Kikoho from Tenshinhan.
I think this should be part of this special, however i think this special also shows laziness.
I mean,it would be better to see the z-fighters fighting some warriors and beat them, however they just used them to destroy some rocks.
I didn't know yajirobé was so important and popular considering that he did something in this special.

Hold up. Although I can't explain in words the feel of the series that I get, I'm going to be sarcastic with my answer. You're right. Screw the random powerful villain showing up. Screw that. Screw thel aughing and him blowing everything up, and screw him dying by something like a Kamehameha. Lets have TWO random very weak villains who you know are about as challenging to the Z Fighters as dealing with a broken nail, have them laugh for reasons unknown to you because you know they're going to end up being fried, have those two merge into one being who is a ripoff of Buu and the fat purple king guy from the Dragon Ball movie, and have HIM lose to a Kamehameha.

Oh and while we're at it, in between, how about nothing super funny? Quite frankly, I understood the humor of the Dragon Ball series. But for the life of me, I wouldn't understand what there's to laugh at from the "beginning to end" of this one.

Fine. People are going to blindly love it because Akira Toriyama had involvement in it. Whatever. Again, if he didn't, peoples' opinions would change. Funny isn't it? And then there's the whole argument, "Yeah well he created it! So if he did, it's gold!" Yeah, yeah. That's a great way to judge the series by the way. Just like most other fans. "He didn't write it, therefore it's crap!" Yeah. That right there is a great way to determine what parts of the series you like. Don't even have a mind of your own, just latch onto what others are saying and latch onto Akira Toriyama. Whatever, let it be. The topic asks what you'd change about the special. So that means that this would deal with the issues in the special. And yet, when I say what I felt was an issue in the special, people get antsy. What a crazy concept to actually think that you can post your actual opinion on a Forum! That's just a crazy thought isn't it? It's not enough that most DBZ fans follow the same train everywhere else, it's gotta be on online Forums too. "How dare you say you like the dub? How dare you say that you like the filler? What?! How dare you say you like GT?! WHAT?! You don't like the special that was done by Toriyama?! What kind of an evil person are you?!"
