The 1990 one? Get fucked. It was one of the more entertaining comic book movies ever made.

It was entertaining and even kept that dark feel that the original comics had, but was lighthearted enough for a mass audience.
Way to respect opinions. Get fucked.

A-fuckin'-men.

That movie was and still is absolutely fantastic, for a movie that was being pitched to an audience primarily familiar with the series via the animated series (which apart from the pang of nostalgia I get upon hearing the theme song, was pretty awful), it was absolutely fucking amazing that they managed to make several nods to the original comic book series, both in terms of story and aesthetic, it would have been so easy for them to turn it into a cutesy kiddie flick, but instead they decided to compromise and take the best from both worlds.

Those aren't the qualities I was thinking about for Goku. I meant the uneducated redneck aspects of his character. I bet by the end of the movie he'll have "Evolved" into a happy, confident guy. The writer had to include some sort of character arc. Goku's one of my least favorite characters in DB because he never really changes.

Okay, I'm going to try not to curse here. For real? I've always considered the first TMNT movie to be the finest, most complete Turtles story ever told. A close runner-up is the first twenty or so issues of the original comic, but the dialogue brought it down. The 2003 animated series was quite good as well.

Agreed.

It's the best thing 4kids ever did (I still need to pick up seasons 3, 4 and 5 though)

I already expected the uneducated aspects of his character to go out the window as soon as it was mentioned that he's a high school student. The rest of his character is what I'm wondering about now.

As for his character not developing, I see a lot of personality development from the time he met Bulma, to the time he fought Piccolo, to the time he fought Freeza, to the middle/end of the Boo arc, to the fight against Abo and Cado. Sure, it's a very gradual process and he still keeps his basic character, but you can see that he's changed if you look at the more humorous and more caring aspects of his personality.

With all the Is Piccolo green or yellow? stuff, here is something which scares me. It is from an interview with TV Guide.
TV Guide: Nice to know you're so enthusiastic. Who do you play?
Marsters: Lord Piccolo. He's thousands of years old and a very long time ago he used to be a force of good but got into a bad argument and was put into prison for 2,000 years. It got him very angry, and he finds a way to escape and then tries to destroy the world. The cool thing is, anybody who has seen Dragonball knows that Lord Piccolo transforms into a character named Piccolo, and that is a whole other ball of wax. That is one of the most popular characters in the whole series. I've been told I'm working for people who will just flay me alive if I give too much information, but what I can tell you is the character is green, bald and has pointed ears. Heroic wouldn't be the wrong term by the end, but it's a long journey.

So, what we're seeing here is a Piccolo who will not be killed but instead be turned good.

I honestly have no idea. I am just going to try to watch the movie and enjoy it as a movie without thinking about how...... weird it is.

Okay, I just saw it and I don't really know what to think... I can probably give a better opinion when I get home where I can watch it quietly... Only 5 more hours to go.

I don't like Gohan and Goku's house by the way. It looked like one of those Western houses... As in, that of cowboys. :/

Looks like a generic low-budget crappy sci-fi movie to me. I see nothing, outside of vague references to DB that would make me think of DB. Sad, because I wanted it to be cool. They really DID get Goku's character wrong... turning him into the basic doubting and unlikely hero. Would it have been so hard to have him be the "Chosen one" and have a confident attitude about it? Part of what is fun about Goku is how he shocks his opponents with his positivity and confidence. Lame.

Dragonballs no longer provide wishes? Well fuck that. I hope that's not the case... but it sounds like they're something else entirely now.

The movie kind of looks cheap... which bothers me. HOWEVER.

I will give this movie a few positive nods.

1.) The KameHameHa looked pretty cool, but it looked weird because it was one handed (and it looked a little cheap on the CGI)

2.) Gohan and Goku training was cool, but I'll be dissapointed if he doesn't use his "power pole."

3.) Piccolo's character seems pretty intact.

... that's about it. The rest looks awful. I might go see it, but I don't really want to all that much honestly. The main reason being because this just isn't REALLY a dragonball movie... and they know it. Hence all the last-minute attempts to make it into something marketable. "Evolution" .. haha.

"It looks like a good movie, just not a good Dragonball movie."
Quoted for emphasis. I also agree about Goku being off character.

I'll reiterate; he's really off character.

I personally prefer the route they seem to be taking of simply coming up with something altogether new then going with that.

We only see him charge it for a split second en hear him yell KaMeHaMeHa but I don't think the simple one-hand blast we see after the last ''HA'' is the Kamehameha.

Did anybody notice what WASN'T in the trailer? That High School shit! I keep hoping that they went back and just cut it out but then I'd be asking for too much right? :?
I completely respect your opinion, and I respect you. I enjoyed discussing this with you, even if I don't completely agree.

Geez... it's been a long time since I've been here. >_>

Anyway, any mention of a live action Dragon Ball movie made me cringe for the longest time... but I'm actually very interested in this. The fact that it's a re-imagining of the story set in a more contemporary setting rather than trying to bring the manga EXACTLY as it was to the screen really pleased me, and I'm impressed with what I've seen thus far.

I'm not going to complain about characterization or anything like that because yeah, I know Gokuu is a lighthearted, naive redneck. I don't think that would have translated very well to live action, especially with an actor like Chatwin. I don't feel like a different representation of him on the big screen takes any more away from his character than the changes they made to him in the English dub.

tl;dr - I'm impressed and I'm really excited to see it, which shocks me more than anyone.

I'm also sort of getting into the idea of the story beginning with a brand new start and a different path from the manga. I mean, although this seems silly to say since this doesn't relate to this type of media but, after playing a lot of the DB games over the years, you tend to get annoyed with seeing the same story done over and over.

Regardless of gaining a live-action version of it, you'll still feel like you'll know what's going to happen, but since this is totally mixing things around and trying to have little twists involved, I'm all for this new form of DB. Let's just hope Kuririn comes around for this new little joy ride in the sequel!

I don't want to speak to soon but... The trailer looked pretty cool.

I quite liked the capsule scene, It obviously isn't traditional dragonball but the 'Transformers' kind of look was pretty awesome. We didn't see too much of Piccolo but that's unsurprising as he seems to be the hidden gem of the movie.

Dare I say it... I'm actually pretty excited... :P

Marsters's take on Piccolo looks and sounds great, His destruction scene was awesome, the Dragon Balls look great, the Kamehameha looks cool, and Mai's shapeshifting ability is pretty hot too. Those are about the only things that warrant any real viewing based on the trailer.

Chatku is still annoying as hell. It likes they took every generic superhero and smackdabbed him right on Goku. "The chosen one" plot device is beaten like a dead horse like in every other martial arts flick (or action flick for that matter), but hey this is James Wong were talking about.

So far, I see good things and bad things altogether. If it's one thing that trailer succeeded in, it's for me to actually consider a viewing, if not for my curiousity of the movie.

Also, JAPPO, don't you think you should've posted this in your previous topic about the trailer. It gets kinda confusing with all these movie topics amok. Thanks.
