I think we're risking a disappointing degree of immaturity here.

I support this sentiment, as best as I'm capable of. :P

Goodnight.
It's his franchise, he can do what he wants with it. But he seems to have a handle on who his characters are. Suddenly changing them into completely different people would not make sense. If he did this from the start then that's the series he wanted to create. Doesn't mean it's like what he actually did write.

Amidst the fray, I think a pretty well written article was overlooked. I wonder how these factors are going to come into play when it comes to sheer box office numbers.

I'd love for it to bomb, but I have no doubt it will do good. That's the plan, to cash in on the name DragonBall. :(

Actually, I can. Great Saiyaman was part of an attempted dramatic change from the dramatic sci-fi doomsaying fights to the death back to the humor that's a staple of Toriyama's work. Sure, he was making fun of Choujin in the process, but he'd made fun of other things like Super Sentai as well.

Of course, it seems as if fans and editors didn't like that, so what would've become my favorite tournament got interrupted by a pink blob that later ended up becoming part of the comedy Toriyama was going after creating more of.

You know what my beef is with this movie? Its looks too fucking generic.

Wong has the same problem Tim Story had with the Fantastic Four movies: he's lacking a distinctive creative vision. What am I going to remember about this movie after all is said and done? What's going to seperate Goku from Peter Parker?

One last thing: Am I the only one who found it funny that during the trailer, they have to name off each character? Its like they thought, "No ones gonna recognize these characters. We better show them who is supposed to be who."

Great Saiyaman is actually also a parody of Super Sentai, according to Toriyama.

Actually, I just got done reading it about three seconds ago. After reading it, I really like what it had to say. Especially these parts:
I’ve now watched the first officially released Dragonball: Evolution trailer a few times, and my opinion of it isn’t changing. On the positive side, I’m not brewing a gradually growing distaste for it. On the negative side, my desire to see the film isn’t growing either.
...and...
While I’m hesitant to praise Dragonball: Evolution on the basis of a couple trailers and advance images, I haven’t yet seen anything about the film that would suggest its status as one of the upcoming year’s worst movies. Personally, I’m expecting a thoroughly mediocre picture with superficial similarities to Akira Toriyama’s Dragon Ball - not a disastrous cinematic train wreck nor an enthralling adaptation.
I very much share these points-of-view.

My mistake. Him being a singular hero and not part of a team made me think of Choujin. Maybe Tokusatsu Hero would've been a better phrase for me to use.

In other words. There's Magical Balls and a guy named Goku. Similarities end there.

I actually believe as a Movie (Not DragonBall) it could be an entertaining film.

It probably will be, but as Brad Redfield said, it looks too 'generic action movie' to be decent in that respect.

I find all of this a very amusing read because if they had put up an EXACT replication of the manga the same people would probably be complaining. Imagine Chatwin's Gokuu seeing the capsule bike and being beside himself in amazement. "WHAT IS THAT? ARE YOU A WITCH? *Poke poke*" Now imagine him flying around on the Kinto'un. Imagine his lines all sounding like they were being written by Larry the Cable Guy.

IT DOESN'T TRANSLATE INTO REAL LIFE.

It's the same reason Wolverine didn't wear yellow spandex in the X-Men movie. You have to take liberties and deviate from the source material in order to adapt the story successfully to a different medium. Were people up in arms about the no yellow spandex at the time? Yeah, but once people saw the movie they saw that it WORKED, and they did it for a reason.

Dragon Ball is my favorite story that has ever been told. I don't watch the dub, never really have. I'm excited for this movie because it's a different take on the Dragon Ball story. By all means if you want the same story retold EXACTLY, just read the manga or watch the anime again. This movie isn't going to snap all your DVDs in half or burn all your copies of the manga. The original story will always exist and be just as important as it always has been.

After playing all the video games that just regurgitate the story OVER AND OVER AND OVER again I'm REALLY psyched to see a version of the story I DON'T know, to see someone else's take on it. Honestly I think if everyone stopped being so 'OMG THIS IS NOT the MANGA IT SUCKS' you'd not only be happier, but you'd *gasp* ENJOY yourself.

I'm really excited to see it, and I'm fully aware that it could be absolutely terrible. However I refuse to write it off completely because it's not the manga put exactly as it was on the movie screen.

Commence tearing apart of this post... NOW. :D

I see what you mean. It's not cool for FOX to cash in on the series the way they are going about it. Even though Dimps does the exact same thing when they release shitty games like Burst Limit and rehash old PS2 games and PSP games at least I KNOW I'm getting something that "looks" and "feels" like Dragon Ball.

I wanted something akin to Dragonball movie four, is all. Son Gokû's no longer a strange mountain boy, he's supposedly some emo high school kid who is suppose to be the same character however judging from the trailer is not.

He only had 3-4 lines of dialog! For all we know he could spend the rest of the movie doing that whole "Happy Go Lucky" type shit everyone is worried about.

Shouldn't a trailer tell us what sort of character we're dealing with?

It probably should but this one seemed more focused on action than anything else. They didn't even really explain the plot. I'm not saying that's a good thing though but that is how it looked to me.
