There was some improvement in the second clip, but not that much, I find it especially unbearable because I have heard better from Schemmel, I found myself constantly switching over to the dub cast on Burst Limit just to see how he handled a scene, which is a huge deal for me, because I can't stand the FUNimation dub.

I also liked his serious moments, mainly in the Buu Saga when he's trying to talk sense into Vegeta during their fight and when they need to perform Potara Fusion. Love the scene.

So, yeah, I think he's good and getting better as of late.
My favorite serious Goku moment was during the Babidi saga when Vegeta killed the audience members. He was awesome in that scene.

And I love his badass SSJ4 voice.

Peter Kelamis is the actor I like best. His high voice really suits Goku.
In addition, he pronouces the names of techniques in perfect way, like Kaiiioookeeeeeen(not Kayowken).
Sean Schemmel sounds too heroic :?: for Goku I guess. And Ian J. Corllet just reminds me of Mega Man.

The worst one is Kirby Morrow. His poor screaming irritates me.

Agreed. I remember when I still kind of kept tabs on the dub, I traveled to New York to see the English premiere of the Cowboy Bebop: Knockin' on Heaven's Door film. Near the end, there's a particular fight scene where it literally sounds like the two characters involved are beating the crap out of eachother.

See? That's what a dubbed fight should sound like, IMHO. There's "ughs" and "ahs," but not every single moment. Back then it served as a massive contrast to FUNi's handling of fights in DragonBall.

Totally agreed. Though of course Bebop's dub was actually professional in whom it cast, wrote for, and directed. ;p

Not to say that the scene was bad, but we must have different ears, because I heard grunts every 2 seconds during that fight.

Yeah, but note how they coincided with actually blows and such. They seemed in place. Whereas with FUNi's dub, it seems like if you're breathing and in a fight, you must be making noise.

Not to mention, Steve Blum and whomever played Vincent don't seem to play it to the cheap seats, so to speak.

Ah...I see. And I tend to agree with you on that. A lot of the grunts and noises are random and all over the place during the fast moving fight scenes in DBZ.

I really can't put my finger on it. I just remember thinking that Goku's actor, I didn't know who he was at the time, was really off his mark. I found it to be weird because I really enjoyed his work on the TV series, in the Buu saga anyway. His delivery of line "You must be a Saiyan!" irked me something fierce. :x Seems I have mixed feelings about Mr. Schemmel after all.

That said, I also believe that Vic Mignogna's (or however the hell it's spelled) and Chris Sabat's performances also had something to do with it. But that's for another thread. Not to mention that I was becoming more and more enthralled with the Japanese version at that point in time.

The "You must be a Saiyan!" line was pretty cheesy sounding. I guess since he had to use the quirky and goofy Goku voice for the whole movie beforehand, it must've been pretty hard for him to deliver a serious line well.

He sounds good outside of Season 3.

Though his grunts and such are just ugh.

While I can't comment much on Schemmel's performance past season 3 (Ocean, woohoo! ... or, not so woohoo, if you didn't grow up with the Ocean cast as your DBZ voices...), I can say that his performance in video games (especially Burst Limit) is incredible.

I can't say how overjoyed I was with his correct pronounciation of "Kaiō-ken", or his general delivery in the SSJ on Namek portion ("That Earthling's name... IS [KURIRIIIIIINNNN]!!!!!" springs to mind). And I feel I need to make a seperate thread on "I am Son Goku... A SUPER SAIYAN!!!!!!!!!!1111shiftone". The delivery, the screaming, the dialogue (I actually got chills and almost teared up at hearing "Son Goku", something I never, ever thought I'd hear Schemmel's Goku say)... I think I wet my luxury elastic 100% cotton shorts.

So, in short (haha), as of 2008... Schemmel is the best English Goku evAr.

I really wish Schemmel would've redubbed Season 3. He could've been awesome.

I heard he likes listening to season 3's old performance mainly to see how he's improved; I've also heard he actually passed out doing SSJ3's scream. Like the guy or not, if the latter fact is true, then I believe he deserves some props. THAT's dedication.

Personally? I like him, once he gets good. My nostalgia is mostly for the Buu saga, so I don't know just HOW bad he is beforehand.

Yeah, how can you not respect the man when he's actually passed out from being so dedicated to his job. And didn't he take breathing classes as well?

He teaches 'em.

Yeah, Schemmel and Eric Vale have passed out before recording DBZ, the latter while recording under I believe Chris Sabat, who I believe laughed at him (or maybe it was McFarland).

I like Schemmel enough, as I grew up with him, although I still think Nozawa is better.

I think I'll always prefer Schemmel. He's the Goku for me, and anyone else besides Nozawa would sound akward for me.

Hate the man. Always have.

Even if not for the fact that, to me, Ian Corlett is the DEFINITIVE Gokou in any language outside of the original, those old interviews from back in the day (many of you remember the ones) always just rubbed me the wrong way...in those days, everyone was up in arms over Mr. Christopher 'I-Do-Half-The-Voices-In-DBZ' Sabat, but to me, Schemmel was the real problem. Sabat at least tried, it seemed; yeah, almost all his major characters sucked in the Season 3 dub, but he did attempt to give the minor characters accents to set them apart (wildy inappropriate or not, he did try), whereas Schemmel seemed to let the whole 'I'm Gokou, I'm awesome' thing go waaaay to his head, way too soon.

To me I'll always remember having to endure the constipated grunting and groaning of Season 3 Gokou and then flashing back to the interviews from around the same time period where he not only thinks he's awesome, but thinks he's better for the role than Nozawa fucking Masako. I think that's unforgivable. Say what you will about a woman playing a giant testosterone-oozing muscleman, because I think we all know it's just something that doesn't translate well into American culture, but a voice actor - especially a newbie, which Schemmel very much was at the time - has to have some pretty fucking huge balls to insult the original, especially someone so iconic as Nozawa and for such a role as the definitive and one-and-only Son Gokou. I honestly think those interviews are to blame more than anything for me hating the man so much, but there you have it.

Of course there's also the fact that he's since been reduced to primarily doing voicework for 4Kids in their increasingly bad dubs and making a bigger and bigger fool of himself for each role he's cast in, thinking he's invincible just because the entire country will always love him for his Gokou, so it's okay if he makes an even bigger ass of himself in these roles.

Oh wait, no. Those don't make me hate him more, they make me laugh my ass off to see how far the mighty 'I'm Gokou' has fallen. My mistake.

I really wish I knew where I could find them, but back in the day I remember they were on the now-long-dead DBZOA. If anyone else knows the interviews I'm talking about, though, a link would be much appreciated.
