I will admit that I'm a bit biased towards Schemmel, since I started watching from Season 3. Having only discovered the other voices of Goku relatively recently, he remains the true (English) Goku in my eyes. With that said, though, I've watched the "Goku's Many English Voice Talents" youtube clip a number of times with a genuinely open mind, fully aware of my bias and trying to work around it. After all, within a few months, I've come to grow fond of Masako Nozawa's Goku voice (with my opinions going from that Goku sounds like a 10 year old girl, to Goku's voice actress sounds good but just doesn't fit, to Goku's voice actress is tied for the best Goku period), so it's not like I've been unable to do so. I just wanted to put that out there before I gave my opinion:
The other English voice actors (in other words, everybody but Schemmel) are garbage. Seriously, wow. Garbage. The Ocean cast in general was the worst thing I've ever seen, and I fully admit that Schemmel and the rest were pretty atrocious in Season 3. I do, in hindsight at least. But the Funimation cast at its WORST was better than the Ocean cast at its BEST. When I first heard the Ocean dub, I SERIOUSLY thought it was a fandub. To be fair, Brian Drummond wasn't a terrible Vegeta (his "YOU WON'T ESCAPE MY WRATH" line was truly great and he should have been doing that ALL the time), though the voice didn't fit the character by the time of the Buu Saga. But, as for Goku, Ian Cortlett I think sounded terrible. Kirby Morrow sounded, I don't know, but it just didn't sound good at all. When he went Super Saiyan 3, he sounded like a generic villain (even Schemmel's gravelly SSJ4 Goku didn't sound so generic, it actually sounded pretty badass). As for the rest of his performance, it sounded pretty dispensable (the scream would have been awesome had it been a different character, but it didn't really seem like Goku. I kind of thought he was going to start talking like a surfer dude). Peter Kelamis was the best of the 3, but he too was tough to listen to. In his defense, he had a single point in one of the movies where his acting was inexplicably amazing (in Movie 2, where he uses the Kaioken x3. That scream directly after made it sound as if Goku was using so much power that it actually hurt), but other than that, garbage.
Schemmel, on the other hand, really conveys Goku's silliness and naiviette in certain scenes, his dedication and devotion to protecting his friends in others, so on and so forth. Even if he doesn't use the hick slang, I think his tone of voice gets it right. Nowadays at least. Like I said, I am fully aware of the atrociousness that is his Season 3 performance. His whole "Ally to good, nightmare to you speech". Being in Ginyu's body and going "The pain is too strong and I can't go on". And the Kamehameha dump. I've heard it and cringed at it. But his performance there is STILL better than that of the other actors. And his more recent portrayals of Goku were simply amazing. Even if I hadn't been biased like I said before, I truly believe that I would see Schemmel as the definitive English Goku.
I know I'm going to catch some flak from Ocean fans and people who don't like Schemmel. Hey, it's just an opinion. I'm not going to change yours and you're not going to change mine, no matter what. So can we at least agree that Nozawa was an awesome Goku?
