He felt surprised when he saw everything but after meeting the cast and crew, he felt they were splendid. He hopes that it will become a new Dragon Ball to be enjoyed and confirms that he is very much looking forward to it.
Okay, he was suprised, but aftermeeting the cast and crew, he felt they were splendid.

Like you said, using "but" usually changes the former idea.

So, it would go like this:

"I think bad, but this happened, now I think good."

And apparently Toriyama said this:
"I was suprised, but after meeting the cast, they were splendid."
So that lookes like a:

"I think --, but after this, it's splendid"

Splendid means good where I come from, so lets fill in the blank.

"I thought bad, but after meeting the cast, they were splendid"

This is just going off of you saying that "but" changes to former idea.
So, "Good, but, now bad" or "Bad, but, now good".
Toriyama's quote looks like a "Bad, but, now good" type of deal to me. I'm not sure that made any sense, I got a little confused while I was typing it.

So, if anything, it looks like he's praising the film, especially since he goes on to say that "He hopes that it will become a new Dragon Ball to be enjoyed and confirms that he is very much looking forward to it".

However, the entire quote is probably just your run-of-the-mill, Japanese niceness/humble-ism. :D

But the problem is, meeting the people who made it wouldn't change the fact that he didn't initially like it.

Which is where I get the being nice in front of the people who made it. Toriyama IS a very humble man so he'd never trash the thing (Namely to their face).

It seems like he's just giving a polite answer despite skepticism while watching it.

But, the even if he initially didn't like it, doesn't change the fact that he may like it now.
Just because people assume a comment is pure fanboy negativity doesn't mean it is.
But, that is what it appears to be.

I'm wondering how someone can know Toriyama's supposed "secret disapproval" of this movie after only reading a short quote that only expresses positivity, if anything.

It seems to me that you may be reading a little too deeply into this (paraphrased) quote to make it seem that Toriyama hates this movie, but is only saying he liked it to be nice. Even people who agree with you and are against the movie can't see the connection.

I'm not trying to attack you or anything like that. I myself are in the middle of the LAM spectrum. I'm not someone who says "This movie is a disgrace and shouldn't exist". Neither am I someone who is fully with this movie, thinking its one of the greatest revelations ever.

All in all, it's just one movie. One single movie out of 20+ years of a franchise(That already has 17 theatrical films of its own, mind you). A lot of people are just taking this movie a bit too seriously. Sure, I'm glad that Dragonball is getting some mainstream attention, and I'm going to go see it. But, I'm going to enjoy it for what it is: a simple adaption that doesn't mean much at all. Looking at all the other adaptations like this that have been made, it is looking to suck. However, I'm expecting to be pleasantly suprised with a film that will be a nice little distraction for a couple hours.

In my own opinion, there's no way this film can hurt the already existing fanbase. It can only bring in new fans. And when that happens, they'll probably be former dubbies and/or mostly only movie savvy people. However, then it will be our turn to introduce them into the other aspects of Dragonball, and show them what a great series it really is. The LAM is a little jump strart for the new fans, and we(and the real series) are going to be the motor/wheels to keep them running on the right track.

And, even if tons of fans never embrace the original and only stick to their movie knowledge? Who really cares? We're fans of the original and that's all that matters. I don't think that this movie is something to be despised. I think it is something that should be like "Hey, that's kind of neat. I'm glad Dragonball is getting enough attention to get a movie like this." I know it strays from the original, and that it changes a lot of things, but these are all things that the writers have done to "adapt" Dragonball into what the world(Okay...mostly America) thinks is "cool" and "a good movie" nowadays. It has been modified to fit America's modern tastes. These people aren't looking to attract us and make us happy. We're already fans. They want to draw in new people.

Well, I'm tired, and that's all I can think of to write about on the subject right now...but if I think of anything else, it'll be up here! :D (Maybe not in this post or thread...but "here" on the forums wherever it needs to be at the time).

Of course he'd be pleasantly surprised and looking forward to it. He likes filler, too.

It isn't as if Toriyama has to share a certain opinion. Even if he was just using Japanese Indirectness (tm) and really does share the general negative outlook many of us have, it was said a couple days ago in another thread that he's "nicer than nice" and all that stuff.

I'm glad to hear Toriyama's official word on the movie. I'm glad he's easier to entertain than I am. End of story.

Big Momma - But why would meeting the people who made something that you disliked change your opinion? Don't you think it's possible that he may have disliked it but still have respect for the creative minds behind it?

My reasoning is not far fetched like everyone seems to be making it out to be.

He says..."I watched it and was surprised but after meeting the people *Insert nice comments*"

It seems just like a white lie. I mean if you dislike Family Guy and met Seth McFarlane on the street and he asked you. I highly doubt you'd trash the thing to his face.

I don't know about you, but I would. Hate that show.

It's easy to say that right now with no consequence. Most people say they'd react one way in a specific situation and then break down.

1) One man is not the same as the whole crew.
2) Bad example, as Family Guy's anti-fanbase is nearly as big as its normal fanbase.

My point is, I hate everything about this movie. But I would not to walk up to Justin Chatwin and slam it, his Goku, his acting, or anything else I may dislike.

I would definitely not mind telling him if I didn't like Family Guy.

But I like it. XD (Even if I did dislike it, though, I'd have no problem telling him.)
But why would meeting the people who made something that you disliked change your opinion? Don't you think it's possible that he may have disliked it but still have respect for the creative minds behind it?
Unless he's already seen the movie, this is what I think: He didn't have high hopes for the movie, but after meeting the cast and crew, and hearing from them about what they did for the movie/seeing the casts personalities and thoughts/opinions on the parts, he may feel a little more optimistic.

It's like if I feel really queasy about Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson playing Master Chief in a new Live Action Halo movie...but them get a chance to meet him in person, and learn he is an avid Halo player. That may change my opinion to "Well, The Rock is a fan of Halo, so he knows how Master Chief should/would act in different situations, so I'm not as worried about as I was."

I'm not saying Toriyama is all for the movie, I'm just saying that to me it seems that he definitely doesn't hate it, or have any secret dislike for it....not hidden in that one quote, anyways.

Wait a second...Didn't he see the movie? From the quote I assumed he got a screening of it.

Sounds like footage, not the whole movie.

If that is the case then I retract everything I've said. I thought I had all the facts but if what you say is true, I did not.

Pretty much what I thought. I never expected Akira Toriyama to pull a Alan Moore here and say the live action movie about his comics are rehashed Hollywood garbage. Why would anyone want to jeopardize ticket sales to a movie about there own franchise.

Perhaps a few members here would be honest about it, if it was your franchise. I mean obviously Alan Moore have the balls to do it. With all due respect, Alan Moore is insane, but if you do it your a moron. If Toriyama did indeed hated the living crap out this film, the only thing anyone could to do in his position is just smile nod, and say it was "splendid."

By the way, I prefer to put myself under the insane category, not moronic.

Probably because of your avatar, in my mind I pictured Toriyama saying "splendid" the way Mr. Burns goes "excellent", with the finger movements and everything.

Just to play Devil's Advocate to your theory...

Since most of his quote was basically positive, and the opening part is at worst questionable, maybe he didn't dislike it in the first place. Especially since, as you say, meeting the crew wouldn't change his mind.
To show my appreciation, I'll only beat them half to death.

Like I said, I've already retracted my statements for now. I thought he got a full screening.
