Opinions of Schemmel?
Oh wow. I saw that it was a parody and wasn't expecting much, but that was actually really good.
I mean, I still consider Schemmel to be the best and definitive English Goku, but MasakoX is still a giant step up from Cortlett, Kelamis, and Morrow. At the very least, he's not complete garbage. Honestly, I'd love to see him do a non-parody of Goku. It makes it a bit hard to judge like this.
Oh, and the Vegeta and Nappa voices are AMAZING!!!

Masako would make a great replacement if Schemmel ever met with a highly untimely death.

Yeah, if you wanna talk more about the series voices, there's a thread in the fan-works section. But, yeah. I've seen him do non-parody work, not as Goku, but I know he can be serious.Joey Batz wrote:Oh wow. I saw that it was a parody and wasn't expecting much, but that was actually really good.

But anyways, who else wants 4Kids to collapse faster than they should, so Schemmel might go back to FUNimation and re-dub some of his stuff. I'd like to see more Burst Limit quality dubbing from him.
True to that. Oh, well at least some people on YouTube are doing Fandubs of Z/GT with him in them. But in no way am I hoping for Sean to die. They're not done yet, but yeah.JulieYBM wrote:Masako would make a great replacement if Schemmel ever met with a highly untimely death.
So I was watching Season 2 yesterday, and one thing I noticed is that in episode 73, the one where Goku's in Ginyu's body and fights Ginyu, he was actually pretty good, and a lot of his lines were delivered in the same manner that they would be now. But then in episode 74, he diverted back to crap.

And if Funi stopped redubbing at Season 2, how do you explain Season 3?

In the middle of season three. When the Captain Ginyu saga ends, there is a significant shift in quality of voice acting on all fronts. Vegeta, Gohan, Freeza, and (seemingly) Goku. I've always been under the impression that that is where FUNimation began the voice acting with the current cast, and that's why every character sounds unenthusiastic and just generally not up to par by Buu saga standards.jjgp1112 wrote:Schemmel didn't redub anything in Season 2.Innagadadavida wrote:That's where he FUNi stopped redubbing.jjgp1112 wrote:So I was watching Season 2 yesterday, and one thing I noticed is that in episode 73, the one where Goku's in Ginyu's body and fights Ginyu, he was actually pretty good, and a lot of his lines were delivered in the same manner that they would be now. But Mr. Sabat and Mr. Strait redubbed ALL of their Frieza saga lines.
When I mean Season 2 and Season 3, I mean the remastered boxsets, not Toonami seasons.

I believe Schimmel redubbed all the way up to the Capt. Ginyu saga. Vegeta and Krillin were redubbed through the Freeza Saga, but not Goku.jjgp1112 wrote:But Mr. Sabat and Mr. Strait redubbed ALL of their Freeza saga lines.

When I mean redub, I mean Funi redubbing stuff that they already did for consistency. Seasons 1 & 2 aren't redubs. Schemmel didn't go back and redo ANYTHING, for Season 2. However, Sabat's and Strait's work on the Ginyu Saga are redubs, since they already worked on those before.Innagadadavida wrote:I believe Schimmel redubbed all the way up to the Capt. Ginyu saga. I couldn't help but notice certain elements of this thread. This ain't meant to detract from the topic, but there's a few things I'd be remiss not to address.
First of all, for people like bkev who are always asking but never know where to locate it, I'll link here for the third time to my post including the entire text of The Sean Schemmel Experience and let people make their own judgment call.
For the record, everything that SG2 is referencing in her earlier posts is 100% truth. The text may be somewhat dated in comparison to the videos, but old facts are still facts and needn't be counted as opinion.
I understand that both of you are passionate about your individual standpoints, but little-to-nothing will be gained from doing things like bashing the minority or giving excuses like "it's a cartoon" to dismiss their opinions.
There are plenty of other statements that give off this holier-than-thou vibe to Schemmel and his opinion of "his" Goku and his performances as such. All one needs do is read through the original text.
Don't get me wrong; it's not my intention to spotlight the past as the only necessary or reputable source of opinion. I'm all for change, and I'm sure that Schemmel has learned a lot in his time with DragonBall, particularly in the long reflection he's been afforded since his "retirement". But that doesn't necessarily write off things that were said in the past which served to impact the overall opinion of people like SG2, opinions which are no less valid than yours or mine.
I'm done now.

Come on, now. That was rather uncalled for, and for all of the reasons SG2 stated in her reply. Since when is DragonBall "just a cartoon" to any of us? I can appreciate that there is of course a limit to how seriously we should be taking ourselves, but I hardly think that she's taking the debate into a realm that warrants slapping her with a reality check. The thread is for opinions of Schemmel, and she's giving hers. Challenging an opinion is one thing; coldly dismissing it as childish merely because it's in disagreement with yours is quite another.JulieYBM wrote:I'll do it for you:jjgp1112 wrote:I would make a response to Suupaa Gohan's post, but I'm to tired...
Dude, it's a cartoon. In this video series I remember him being very humble about it all.
I understand that both of you are passionate about your individual standpoints, but little-to-nothing will be gained from doing things like bashing the minority or giving excuses like "it's a cartoon" to dismiss their opinions.
The Sean Schemmel Exerience is anything but fake, and I'll quote directly from it here:JulieYBM wrote:You might as well have called him the Anti-Christ. Calling him 'evil' is pretty silly. That's why I said 'dude, it's a cartoon' because it's absurd to hate somebody over children's entertainment--however good it is. I've posted two video links now of a very greatful and humble Schemmel who even expresses his guilt in taking more credit than he feels he should ("there's all of this animation that takes hours and hours to do, they should be getting attention for that" or something to such a nature). That is who Sean Schemmel is. Either the interviews you read are fake, he was joking and you failed to pick that up, or he's become wiser with age. You don't need to like his work, but don't persecute him for things he has not said or done.
I believe that this is what SG2 is referencing when she's talking about Schemmel elevating himself against Masako Nozawa. It's a bit of a startling statement at first glance, regardless of whether or not he's changed his opinion since then. And it's a rather difficult one to reconcile with fans of the Japanese version and particularly Nozawa, even if it is years after the fact.I love Japanese people, but they're trying to speak to their culture. For crying out loud, Gokuu's voice is done by a woman (Masako Nozawa) in the Japanese version. Do you picture a muscle bound, monkey-like fighting badass as having a high pitched womanly voice? I mean, I don't really think so. By that I mean that it's ridiculous to American culture. Now to the Japanese culture, they totally love it.

My only problem was that she was calling him evil, passionately hating somebody for a few crack comments they made how many years ago is a little silly is all. I love Dragonball, sure, but there's a point where we have to stand back and ask ourselves: "Were I ever to meet this person, would they deserve me being rude and/or cold with them?" As for the quote in question, I wouldn't exactly blame him for his words, at that time it would make more sense to push the whole Americanization of the franchise. He probably wouldn't be saying anything about the opening theme were it not changed and as for Nozawa, and I don't think he was placing himself above her so much as reciting what is probably the truth: most Joe Publics probably would complain about Gokuu being voiced by a girl. I'm really interested to see where this goes when Naruto grows up as even at fifteen he was not recast in the dub (Maile Flanagan continues to voice him and probably will if he's ever an adult).
Schemmel appears to respect the Japanese version, in fact he says outright he enjoyed watching it on IC and was awaiting the DVDs. Maybe things were poorly phrased on his part but to demonize him is going too far.
Also, Jon Allen's Pokémon crack was a little uncalled for. What is hilarious is how Schemmel says he couldn't see himself working on Pokémon and now he's a big actor on the series.
Oh come on.Li'l Lemmy wrote:

How is that Schemmel 'elevating himself' against Nozawa?
He's OBVIOUSLY saying that by "American standards" its "ridiculous" that a "muscle-bound badass" has a high pitch woman's voice.
He isn't saying ANYTHING about him being better than Nozawa, just that its weird by American standards for someone like Goku to be voiced by a woman

But then again, characters like Naruto and Luffy have both been voiced by women here in the states, and nobody questions THEIR masculinity as characters.
I just think that if Goku had ALWAYS been voiced as such, with the same voice actor/actress doing the childlike voice all the way from DragonBall through GT... it wouldn't be an issue. Like the Japanese audience, we'd be used to it. It wouldn't matter if he sounded like a child at age 30-something in Z, because that voice would BE Goku, no matter what.

Grown men can't really make a teenager/kid voice all that well, ya know?

People would care, because its not American culture to have beefed up body-building super heroes to have women's voices.
Maybe if they were younger and less overly masculine, yeah, but not for the average man in Dragonball.

That hardly changes the fact he's a rough and tough pirate of nigh eighteen, even if a man-child.Super Ghost Kamikaze wrote:Er, I doubt Naruto's, actually. As for muscles, I believe he has a six pack not to mention Gear Third and Nightmare Luffy.
As for Naruto, well...he is a 'annoying' character so Flanagan is earning her pay just fine.
But yeah, like Kaboom said were he always voiced by a women nobody'd care, but alas...
Had I had my way Kara Edwards would pull a Nozawa and voice the Sons and Bardock and Tulluece...then again I do like them all with their current voices...
Ah, decisions...
