Anybody ever read Tahi Mahi or Bubul?

Post by Dayspring » Mon Dec 22, 2008 9:54 pm

Just went scowering the web for info and pics on a bunch of Toriyama's other works that were listed on wikipedia. Unsurprisingly, I didn't find any scanslations of Alien X Peke, Tokimecha, Bubul, or Tahi Mahi. :(

I was wondering if anybody else may have read Bubul? I found a scan that had the cover page and first page side by side. The info I found for Bubul said that it takes place in another dimension where magic and monsters are everywhere. A human thief named Patchi accidentally stumbles into a portal that takes him to that dimension. What's interesting, though, is that the scan has a ghost next to Bubul who is identical to José from COWA.

Would anybody know if this "magical realm" is really just Batwing Ridge, the town of José and the other monsters from COWA? And is that ghost that resembles José actually him, or was it just a character design reused in COWA?

Also, WTF is Tahi Mahi? Aside from Wiki mentioning it as being one of Toriyama's works (a full tankoubon that came out the same year as Kajika), I can't find anything at all.

I haven't read Tahi Mahi or Bubul. However, Alien Peke is in volume 2 of Toriyama Man-Kan Full Seater (or whatever that's called), which I own. Want any info on that?

OOH! Yes please! All I know is he's a scout for an alien invader race that lives on a planet similar to Namek.

My copy of the book is back in Tokyo, but basically it's about a scout from an alien race (whose name escapes me; it's something long and weird) who discovers the Earth. His race goes around looking for planets with abundant resources in order to conquer them and take the resources for themselves. The race resembles Namekians in that they are bald with no eyelashes, and have pointed ears. However, they have gray skin (or at least the protagonist does, we never see any other member of his race). The protagonist wears a black jumpsuit, similiar to Gohan's Great Saiyaman outfit after he loses the cape and green robes. They have very good eyesight, are much stronger than humans (of course), and poop by shooting a solid black ball from their mouths immediately after eating. Despire their Namekian appearance, their culture seems much more similiar to the Saiyans, since they invade other planets for profit (the protagonist says he will get a big bonus for discovering Earth) and have much pride in their race. I don't believe much information was given about their planet itself, other than it's name, so wherever you got that their planet was similiar to Namek was probably just going by their looks.

Plot summary, from memory: The protagonist, Peke (one of the Japanese readings for the letter X) is very happy to discover the Earth, since it's resources are first-rate and the inhabitents are so primitive that he can easily wipe them out without calling for reinforcements. But as he's laughing to himself while standing on top of his spaceship, he slips and falls down to Earth. He then spends the next few months traveling around the world looking for where his spaceship crashed. He does various odd jobs to get by, like delivering things on bike, and offering to "pleasure" a woman who stops to comment on his odd appearance. He then meets a boy who is wants to hire him as an assassin to take out some thugs who are trying to force him and his sister off their land. The alien confronts some of the thugs, trying to shot them, but he is an incredibly awful shot. He then simply beats them up with his bare hands, which he does with ease.

The boy's older sister turns out to be the woman the alien encountered earlier, and they and their grandfather cannot go to the police because the leader of the thugs is a corrupt police chief. When he learns of his thugs' defeat, this police chief gathers a large group of men to attack. Meanwhile, the alien learns that the boy has discoverd his spaceship out in the mountains (the boy had earlier told his grandfather he had spent the night sleeping in a weird airplane), but the alien then tells the boy and his family that he intends to conquer the Earth and wipe out all Earthlings (but he offers to spare them). They refuse to tell him the exact location of his ship, and he storms off to find it himself. The second wave of thugs attack soon after. The boy's grandfather tells the boy to go get the alien and promise to tell him the spaceship's location in return for taking care of the thugs. The grandfather then heads off to destroy the spaceship with dynamite to protect the Earth. The alien defeats all the thugs, then says that he will just return to his planet and keep the Earth's existence to himself, to the boy and his sister's delight. Then there's an explosion in the distance as the grandfather blows up the spaceship.

That sounds awesome! I found some pics of the alien itself (grumpy and pushing his bike/scooter). Now I know why. Thanks for the info!
