I admit, he does sound a little more force, and a little too tense now. However, during some of Vegeta's self-fellating scenes when he gets a power up, he really does the arrogant and royal voice well. You can just here it in his voice.
Yamcha: Do you remember the spell to release him - do you know all the words?
Bulma: Of course! I'm not gonna pull a Frieza and screw it up!
Master Roshi: Bulma, I think Frieza failed because he wore too many clothes!

Y'know what I mean

Like when he goes on and on about how he's close to becoming a Super Saiyan and how he's the strongest in the universe.

Oh, I got it. It was well-phrased too, I can just imagine the yaoi fangirls going nuts trying to find an actual drawing of...yeah.

Eh, even when he was all drunk on his own power...it sounded forced. Horikawa had this "Oh, is that all you've got? Prepare for a fuckin', because I'm gonna sodomize your sorry ass without breaking a sweat" approach, whereas Sabat is more...rigid? He never sounds truly in the role. At least to me.

Personally, the only scene that I like with Sabat - minus the script - would be his two deaths. The time he died against Freeza, and then the time that he sacrificed himself. The script ain't so bad in the second one, but the first has INCREDIBLY bad subs.
For all the flack that FUNimation gets on this forum for their quote about DBZ, there's some modicum of truth to it: a 9-year-old is born every day. Or in some cases, "reborn". DBZ may be a kids' show, but it's been so close to so many hearts all over Japan, America, and quite possibly, even the world.
When I'm talking about stuff like this I like to point out the scene where Majin Vegeta tells Goku why he let Babidi (attempt to) take his mind. Sabat sounds typically forced with no kind of emotional range. It's like he's mad, but not too mad. Horikawa on the other hand sounds extremely pissed off and upset and at one point he even sounds like he's on the verge of tears.

I'm talking about Season 3 redub Vegeta, not Babidi saga Vegeta.

I've got to agree. I don't see any "night and day" contrast really.

Well, for one thing, his voice DID get deeper.

I like it better that way. It makes me feel better about Sabat, because he doesn't sound like Brian Drummond anymore.

With a voice like the one Sabat used for Vegeta, I'd find it hard to be truly "in the role" in such a serious setting.

I did like how Mr. Sabat got to be more subtley evil during the Saiyan saga with lines like, "Kakarot is a traitor. He must be punished."

I like his Saiyan and Namek saga voice the best. Deep, but very calm sounding instead of rough sounding like in the Season 3 redub. Very evil, basically.

I sort of wish Sabat spoke with his natural voice. It's actually not all of that different from his Vegeta voice, in fact it's nigh as deep as his Piccolo voice except not as 'dark'.

Oh yes, Schemmel. Much better nowadays, he is. Kame Hame Has and Kaiô-Kens very good. Play Sparking METEOR I shall soon!! :D

Sabat can actually act when he's using something close to his natural voice (his Zoro for example), but when he uses his "character voices" in Z, such as Vegeta and Piccolo, he struggles so hard to keep his voice in character that all of the roles he plays in the series just end up sounding incredibly forced, and more than a little stupid.

Actually, his recent work for Piccolo (Ultimate Uncut, video games) is more or less is natural voice but just deeper.

You hit the nail on the head. I think his Vegeta (and Piccolo) wouldn't sound forced and constipated if he spoke naturally and didn't try to talk through grunts.

Though there was instance in particular when I thought Sabat actually sounded smooth and natural. In the English version of Sparking Meteor I turned on the English audio just to humor myself and did Piccolo Daimao vs. Piccolo Jr. and I was surprised at how smooth Sabat's Piccolo Jr. sounded in the pre-battle dialogue.

Sean Schemmel? Started off horribly, terrible, damned damned awful. We all know it.
But today? He's awesome, everybody has seen the Burst Limit video by now, and I gotta say, when I first saw that cut scene, along with all the drama pieces, it blew me away. Sean started as a rookie voice actor, but he's now pretty seasoned if you ask me, he knows how to " act " :p.
Oh, and boy can he scream.
Also, really nice guy, met him at Collectormania a few years back, always willing to talk to the fans, answer questions, do the voices. Great guy.

I agree. I actually like Sabat as an actor outside of DBZ. I'm sure I'm not the only one who thinks FullMetal Alchemist's Armstrong sounds much more fitting than his Japanese voice. I realize he's still 'doing' a voice for Armstrong, as well as (obviously) Kuwabara in Yuu Yuu Hakusho, but those are two of my favorite Sabat roles, and both for Anime I much prefer the dubs of.

In terms of Sabat's more 'natural' sounding voice...it may be an odd example, but I'm sure many of you are familiar with Shin Chan (I don't care if they totally butchered the show's script, they did it in the opposite way of most dubs, and I think it's hilarious)...the voice of Mr. K, the bodyguard of the rich girl Ai. He's not exactly a huge role in the series, but find one of the episodes he's in...I think that's the closest I've ever heard to Sabat's natural speaking voice in any of the FUNi dubs. If he were to voice Vegeta sounding more like that, I think he'd be a pretty fantastic voice for the part.
