So do I.. Never really thought it would have some sort of relation to Dragonball. It was just a habit.Komati wrote:I say goodbye like that.

Yeah it's just a simple gesture. When Vegeta pointed two fingers at Kiwi earlier in the series that was a way to direct a surge of Ki to blow him up. Freeza did that as well with Ki attacks like the Earth Splitting one and of course his infamous beam.
A two fingered salute is pretty common although the way Vegeta did to Trunks is different. I never saw anyone do that in real life, but it must be a "peace" kind of sign or a variation on the two fingered salute. Actually that reminds me of the gesture you see in portraits of Jesus Christ and other Christian saints.

I always thought it was merely a common gesture of greetings or farewells. I'd like to think that in this case it was no different. Is it safe to say some of us may be reading just a tad bit too far into the psyche behind the gesture?

I thought it to be just a goodbye gesture, I could hardly see Vegeta waving like he was guiding some aircrafts into land. It's just a small but modest way of showing his son some respect. It's nice that we see Trunks doing the same reply back.
"Ok, use your instincts Kakarott. Right or Left? (Hmmm... I'd have to say... left.) Good. Then I'm going right!" (Vegeta to Goku as they try to find their way to free the others inside Buu - Episode: The Innards of Buu)

Too lazy to check since it goes as one of the following:The Tori-bot wrote:So, let me get this straight...

Either:
Panel a - Something catches Trunks' attention
Panel b - Trunks smiles when he sees what it is
Panel c - We see that it's Vegeta who was giving him the salute
or:

Panel c - Trunks smiles as a result of seeing Vegeta wave goodbye.
Like I said, the anime completely ruins the tone of this scene by making Vegeta's salute a response to Trunks'. The emotion comes from the fact that it's Vegeta who's expressing his feelings, not acknowledging someone else's.

Err, doesn't Vegeta do it first though in the anime?Dayspring wrote:Like I said, the anime completely ruins the tone of this scene by making Vegeta's salute a response to Trunks'. The emotion comes from the fact that it's Vegeta who's expressing his feelings, not acknowledging someone else's.

Anyhoo, it would have had more impact if we got the zoomed in warm smile of Trunks instead of a returned two-finger salute. The latter gives off the impression that it is indeed more than just a wave to them.

I've always taken it as a kind of wave. In fact after I originally saw this Episode, I started doing it.
It's a shame the Manga only has Vegeta do it. I like the fact that Trunks does it back in the Anime. To me it seems like more of a war, father/son moment. Like Trunks knows this is the best he'll get and sort mimics his father as son's typically do. Normally a son would do this when younger, but Trunks never knew his father. So perhaps that moment make him feel like a kid inside (Anime wise).

After I read this post yesterday, I decided to use the two-fingered salute with a co-worker today.
She replied with a "What the fuck was that!"
I walked away in shame, pretending to ignore her response.

Gohan: At least he doesn't have his sword out anymore.
Kuririn: Yeah, and your dad put his finger away too.

I'm going to try that at work tomorrow, I will have to let you know if I get the same response!

Totally different, and its all about how John The Baptist is actually the messiah and Jesus was a con artist.
