Vegeta barely used any energy. His body alone was physically weakened to the point where he could have died, but he still had the ability to destroy planets with his ki if he wanted to. With Vegeta's energy, Goku gained enough power that could overpower Broly's. Personally, I don't think Goku should have been able to kill Broly with all that power because it was being emphasized so much that Broly's power just kept growing(if that makes any sense).
Sure, realistically that's the case. However, Ki (or energy) is strongly tied to willpower, emotions, and mindset. Plus, it's Shonen. Combine those two factors together and pour them all over the main character and you've got a guy who has the ability to overcome impossible odds.
Does it make realistic sense? No, it doesn't. However, it looks cool and says something to the kids who were watching it about never giving up.

I guess the kids love a good “Toei Punch”.
The Saiyans are very much like the Klingons and Jem'Hadar.

This is EXACTLY why I love Dragonball, especially Genki Dama moments, it's all about pulling together, even if the situation looks impossible, if we all try, we can do it!
Makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside. So yeah, I can tolerate the first.. and maybe second Broly in this respect, for having this outcome.. I still fucking hate that weird shit blob with green hair though.

Naw, I am talking about that fan name for that ridiculous punch Kakarrot used to defeat Broli in Movie #8, which was illogical even for Dragonball. Whenever I get to the end of that movie, I just turn it off and move on to the next one. The 10th movie had a more believable ending or defeat of Broli than #8, the sun killed him instead of the Idiot Trio.

If you would check the archives you will find a thread where Mike explains that the name should be “Broli” instead of “Broly”, “Brolli” or “Brolly” because of the play on the vegetable broccoli.

Well, in Japanese his name is ブロリー (Burorii). So, I would guess that Broli is the most correct way not counting any official dub namings. Unless I'm completely mistaken, his name's a pun on Broccoli, which ends in "I" instead of "Y." So, Broli should end in "I" and not "Y."
I'd briefly thought about keeping the extra "I" on there but it's largely pointless as we don't need it in English. Not a lot of people spell "Goku" as "Gokuu" when I read online and most people stick to "Vegeta" instead of "Bejiita" or "Vegiita" as the dub name works with the name pun a lot better when spelling it out in our alphabet.
Of course, I'll probably end up forgetting all of this and keep spelling it as "Brolly" or something.

I am more annoyed by people saying his name wrong than people spelling it "wrong". I have literally heard people pronounce it "Brawly". *cringes*
Anyway, I always type Broly. So I guess that's how I spell it.

The dub pronounces his name "Bro-lee." I knew about the pun before I saw the movies and so I called him (and continue to call him) "Bra-lee." It makes more sense to me that way, but it's not the way you pronounce the spelling of "Broly."

You do realize the Hulk has had 46 years to define himself, whereas Broli has only had 115 minutes? Sure, they could have given him a slightly better backstory in that time, but this is a
Dragon Ball Z movie villain we’re talking about: the whole point is to establish the character as a threat, then move on to the fighting. In
those terms, yes, I suppose the comparison might be inappropriate, but I was only really commenting on the physique and general attitude of the characters, not their psychology or depth.

In addition to the whole Hulk thing, Broly strikes me as a DBZ version of 90's Venom/Eddie Brock. You have a large unstoppable monster with a grin and blank eyes, unrelentlessly pursuing smaller foes. Design-wise he carries much of the same appeal as Venom. It's... kind of a 90's thing.
There's also the backstory; Toriyama spent all of the Saiyan and Freeza sagas hyping the Saiyan history/legacy, but that backstory suddenly became more or less irrelevant when the Cell saga came. Movie 8 returns that sense of backstory.
Then there's the group dynamic. Toriyama loved using three sizes for his characters: medium, tiny, and bulking giant.

There's the medium-short dynamic going on between Goku and Vegeta (and again with Goku and Freeza), and to balance that out Toriyama added a big guy between the two that Goku would take down easily to prove his power (ie Nappa, Recoom). Broly's size creates a similar triangle between the three main characters: him, Goku, and Vegeta. So you've got medium vs. tiny vs. giant, only this time around the big guy tougher to beat.

My thoughts exactly. I loved the movie up to the point where Broli went "Grah brah kill all", but from that point on it failed to hold my interest much. Broli was boring, the fighting was unspectacular, and the ending was god-awful. I was watching the movie for the first time with my roommate at the time, who hadn't seen it before either, and we were both going "Oh no, they're not seriously going to do... oh shit, they did" at the end.
Didn't care much for the supposedly much-hailed movie 7 either. After a somewhat amusing build-up and some cool character designs, it quickly turned into boring "Gotta fill an hour" fighting. Blah.

The 25-page Incredible Hulk #1 established the Hulk as a far more interesting character than Broli ever was.

Bulking giant to describe Broli is right.
Broli was a beast; look at how big he was in comparison to everyone else. Even his base form height was almost taller than everyone was.

Every relevant character in the DragonBall world should be posted onto a massive height chart....
Including the farmer *wink wink*

Did Toriyama do those sketches or was it Toei? And are there more?

The only thing I found amusing about Movie 7 was how ridiculously inaccurate they portrayed malls (as in gobs of screaming masses clawing and fighting each other for the latest sales). That was pretty hilarious.
Also, 7 had that cringe-inducing Goku-gets-a-knee-to-the-crotch scene.
On hiatus.
