Episode #0159! VegettoEX, Meri, Julian, and Jeff take a look at volume 23 in our "Manga Review of Awesomeness". The proverbial excrement has begun to hit the fan, with Goku still on his way, and Vegeta being forced to team up with Kuririn and Gohan due to the arrival of Ginyu-Tokusentai. Is the story still moving along, though? News about layoffs and cover art, DBZ ABCs, January's last release, and your great e-mails round out the episode. Referenced sites:
Go ahead and grab it. Big thanks to godofchaos for hosting the rather sweet *one-hundred-fifty-nine* episodes, now.

After we recorded the episode, we spot-checked a couple scenes in the TV series like we mentioned we were going to. On the way to finding Gurd's decapitation scene, Meri and I were reminded of all the extraneous filler that was added to this era of the TV series... namely, Bulma & The Crab™. There was a bunch of other stuff in there, too, though... Vegeta and his back-history with Gurd was a prime example of not-quite-extraneous (but still quite-padding) filler that was added in.

w0rd.

Oh sanphu!

Downloading right now. I'm quite interested in hearing Jeff's thoughts on this volume considering its nature and also on the rest of Namek. I see you guys mentioned the FUNi layoff news, too.

Also, seems you updated the podcast page's look a little.

I see there doesn't seem to be a mention of Vegeta's battle power being 20,000 here in the Manga but later changed 40,000 in another source as Vegeta's battle power was 24,000 when he first arrived on Namek.

I sorta don't like the recaps. It is usually Monday afternoon when I listen to the podcast, and I am on the computer doing other things, and I prefer to just hear the commentary, as I have already read the section many times.

But never mind, I guess I can live with it. :)

It was changed to 30,000 in the kanzenban release. And I believe the anime version of the scene also made the same change, but I don't remember. Also, 30,000 was used in Daizenshuu 7's battle power chart.

As soon as you did number 22 I glanced at 23 saw the Ginyu Rangers and went "aaaaw snap, can't wait for next month!" Time to put on some tea and listen to some Daizex goodness.
Aro started to laugh. “Ha, ha, ha,” he chuckled.- Actual quote from Twilight

I'm surprised you guys didn't talk more about the old Saban dub, particularly Brian Drummond's great performance as Vegeta when he finds out that Gohan was hiding a Dragon Ball from him. For me, that was the moment when the guy *finally* got Vegeta right.

Then, of course, he got recast for Season 3 :(

I'm also surprised you guys didn't talk about the edited version of Gurdo's decapitation, especially since you guys were talking about it so in depth. That was probably one of the bigger changes FUNi made to the series back in the day and was, for me, one of the more convincing ones as well. It ranks up there with the Invisible Man fight in the original Dragon Ball for clever editing.

Great episode and great review. I'm very glad to see that the recap is here to stay, as it makes the whole review much easier to listen to, when it comes to remembering and identifying certain scenes, conversations, etc. But considering that this is my favorite segment of the whole DBZ series, its easy to see why I'd be so excited. If it were, I don't know, the issue with Shin, Spopovich, etc., I might not be so enthusiastic.

As far as the flying question goes, Piccolo mentions something about his bukujutsu (sp?) being different/better than Goku's as the pair are leaving Kame House to find Raditz and Gohan in the television show (flying side by side, toward the camera). I'm not sure if the exchange appears in the manga as well, but it might be worth looking into. By the way, this is coming from the subtitled version of the episode found on Funimation's "remastered" Season One set.

Lastly, I had a question, and it might be a stupid one. If you never ask, you'll never know, right? Right. Mike mentioned the Spanish DVD cover art and said it was of Vegeta in his "Final Bout" pose. I took this to mean the image from the game's opening, where he has on the blue sleeveless shirt, with arms crossed and hair blowing forward in the wind (a hair position we don't see too much from Vegeta). This image can be found on the animation stills gallery on this very site.

So... why does this matter? Well, thanks to this site's animation stills gallery, that image is now on my arm forever. Here is a link:

http://i164.photobucket.com/albums/u11/ ... Photo1.jpg

I was just curious if this was what is referred to as Vegeta's "Final Bout" pose, because it now covers half of my right arm. I should probably know these things, correct?

Word of warning: DBZ tattoos are fiercely addictive. My sleeve is in my sig, this one is fresh and on top of those two, I have three more: Goku with Gohan on his shoulders, Vegeta in Monkey Vegeta form screaming at the full moon and Goku, Vegeta and Piccolo posing together. If you choose to get one, know this: it probably won't be your last.

Great show, great site and keep up the absolutely fantastic work, guys!

Aw, guess I was in the minority about how the reviews should be done... not like I didn't know that already. Personally, I still think you guys should do a much quicker summary of the chapter. I mean, just because you guys don't cover all the details in the summary doesn't mean that you can't bring it up later in the discussion part. For example, during the summary, just say that Vegeta and Zarbon fought and bring up the bit about Vegeta using the dirt in the discussion part. I dunno, it just makes more sense to me, but whatever way suits you, I guess.

You guys brought up how Toriyama would "plant seeds" while story-telling, but I was surprised you didn't bring up Tenshinhan's bit about putting a spin on the Kaioken in the last manga review. While that bit was never played out, I think that just makes it all the more interesting.

I really liked this volume because of all the characters actually hunting down the dragon balls and thinking they fooled one guy when they end up getting fooled themselves. My favorite bit is probably when three of the characters (I think it was Kuririn, Vegeta and Zarbon) said something like "Everything's finally going my way" in connection with the dragon balls. And yeah, I completely agree with the whole "sense of urgency" thing when Vegeta orders Kuririn to destroy the dragon ball.

As of late, I personally thought your guys' endings tended to just take too long, but your guys' hilarity with webhosts near the end of this one made up for all that. Yay for random chats about webhosting!

Since the "planted seeds" were brought up, I loved the Super Saiyan seed in this volume (Does Jeff read this? I hope not...). For some reason, I don't feel like this was the first place the Super Saiyan was brought up. Maybe I'm imagining things...

But on the topic of seeds, this one, the Super Namekian (Piccolo split) and others make the unplanted seeds even more infuriating by comparison. For example, Vegeta crawling back to his space pod on Earth where he claims he is "the mightiest in the universe," despite the existence of Freeza. And Raditz' claim that Planet Vegeta was destroyed by a meteor, rather than by Freeza. I've never heard any explanation for these aside from the old "Toriyama thought up something new as he was writing" excuse. To quote Lucy Lawless, "Every time you see something that doesn't make sense - a wizard did it."

It's pretty clear that Dodoria considers the fact that Freeza destroyed Planet Vegeta to be a big secret, so apparently the meteor thing was their cover-story.

Yeah. Since Vegeta didn't know until Dodoria told him, Raditz of all guys sure as hell had no clue whatsoever.

As for Vegeta claiming himself to be the strongest in the Universe:

1. He's a prideful bastard.

2. He doesn't particularly LIKE Freeza, and obviously WANTS to have the guy dead.

3. "I am the strongest in the Universe, other than maybe a few freaky posing alien guys off in space somewhere and my boss" isn't threatening. At all.

I guess Oozaru Vegeta would be stronger than the Ginyu Force (180,000, same as Goku when he freaked out Ginyu), though they probably would be able to cut off his tail. And of course that still leaves Freeza.
