How can people tell how good the Japanese voice actors are ? Especially the fans that don't understand the language at all? Is it because they sound more convincing or natural? I mean I like the VA for Goku because I guess her voice fits the look of the character but I can't really say "Oh she's a great actor" because I really don't KNOW what shes saying. I could say "So and so" is a great voice actor when in actuality that person could be considered average in Japan. I was just curious and wanted to pose that question to some people. I can understand if a person can SPEAK and UNDERSTAND the language but if you can't then how can you come to that conclusion that "So and so" is a great voice actor?
I completely respect your opinion, and I respect you. I enjoyed discussing this with you, even if I don't completely agree.

That is one of the many things that kinda bothers me about some "Nippon Iz KAwaii DESi-NE1!!" people and "Subbies-who-hate-all-dubs" kinda people...Chrono Trigger wrote:How can people tell how good the Japanese voice actors are ? Heck I've even heard cases where people thought the voice acting was phenomenal, and found out that in Japan, they considered it very sub-par acting.

I don't need to know Japanese to know that Masako Nozawa is a perfectly fine voice actress and that Masato Kubota (Megazone 23) was fucking terrible.Chrono Trigger wrote:How can people tell how good the Japanese voice actors are ? Although DBHighDef may have been kidding, characters voiced by Masako Nozawa sound very very similar.DBHighDefinition wrote:Many of the Japanese voices sound very similar, even if the voice acting is better.Goku, Gohan, Goten, Tullece, Bardock.Seriously? I don't hear that at all. Can you give examples? It may be that its a foreign language which makes you think they sound similar, or just the great difference in the approach to the characters (i.e. - They sound...err, real. Not overly cartoony, except when desired like with Majin Boo).

Sure, they sound similar... they're also part of the same family (while that can easily be seen as an "excuse" from "my side", you have to admit it at least makes some amount of sense). Additionally, Gohan speaks completely differently than Goku, even if the "voice" sounds the same.Satan-Sama wrote:Although DBHighDef may have been kidding, characters voiced by Masako Nozawa sound very very similar.

Well, is speech really a nuance of the actor? Wouldn't that be more because the writing style is different for the character? Really, Gohan sounds like an educated Goku pretty much.VegettoEX wrote:Sure, they sound similar... they're also part of the same family (while that can easily be seen as an "excuse" from "my side", you have to admit it at least makes some amount of sense). No, that was the pointMetalwario64 wrote: ...So people with emphysema sound the same as people with naturally deep speaking voices?
I'm...not sure where this comes from. I've seen a great amount of the dub, via video games (done after the entire series) and clips posted on YouTube for comparison even long after I stopped watching, which were labeled as being from the "UUE" redub era. Please don't make assumptions. I was speaking of Sabat with full knowledge of his later performances.Seriously, this is one of the things that makes me mad about "dub h8terz" most of the time I see dub bashing, they bring up examples from when FUNimation started their dubbing.
Well, if you wanna go to that era, I can definitely say Sabat still sounded gravelly. The first time I noticed a smoother version was when Gohan went to visit Piccolo at Kami's in the Majin Boo arc. Even then, it was inconsistent and oftentimes jumped back to the "swallowed a truckload of gravel" rendition.Seriously, near the end of Season Four, around the episode he decides to become one with Kami, Sabat's voice for Piccolo becomes a deeper version of his speaking voice.
Easy. Certain things transcend language barriers, such as ability to emote. Even if you don't know entirely what someone is saying, you can typically tell if they're angry/happy/sad/etc, right? The same thing applies to acting. If we couldn't discern those qualities, we couldn't judge anyone's acting ability, in our native language or a foreign one.I can understand if a person can SPEAK and UNDERSTAND the language but if you can't then how can you come to that conclusion that "So and so" is a great voice actor?
However, making useless posts is entirely worth the effortIt is best not to question the logic of a fanboy/girl.
Writing is just one small part. An actor who can voice the lines convincingly is as important, if not moreso, than the writing. To quote Eddie Izzard, "70% of what people react to is the look, you know, it's how you look; and 20% is about how you sound; and only 10% is what you say."Well, is speech really a nuance of the actor? Wouldn't that be more because the writing style is different for the character? Really, Gohan sounds like an educated Goku pretty much.
Case in point, Keanu Reeves ;p

Heck... How the heck did we even get to having this huge Sabat discussion in a Sean Schemmel thread?

So when people compare Ms. Nozawa to Mr. Schemmel they go on the idea that: I don't understand what she's saying but I understand what he's saying however she SOUNDED more convincing. He doesn't sound like someone who just found out that he is from outer space but she DOES even though I CAN'T understand what she's saying. Is that how it is?

Stephenie Nadolny should have voiced adult Kakalotto!JAPPO wrote:Goku should be voiced by a man like Chris Elliot.

I always found it odd he sounded like a woman in the Japanese dub. Sorry, but I just did.

Yeah, that was the same as me. Most dub to sub converts get used to it if they persevere with the show.JAPPO wrote:That would be weird though.Metalwario64 wrote:Stephenie Nadolny should have voiced adult Kakalotto!JAPPO wrote:Goku should be voiced by a man like Chris Elliot.

I am curious, however, as to why no (that I am aware of) other country kept child Goku's voice for his adult self even though they all started with the original series.JAPPO wrote:That would be weird though.Metalwario64 wrote:Stephenie Nadolny should have voiced adult Kakalotto!JAPPO wrote:Goku should be voiced by a man like Chris Elliot.

I mean, I've seen people claim that , had Dragonball's dub been done right the first time, Goku would have his child voice as an adult in the dub, but no other country out side of Japan seemed to do this.

Does something necessarily have to be in your language for you to enjoy it at all?Chrono Trigger wrote:So when people compare Ms. Nozawa to Mr. Schemmel they go on the idea that: I don't understand what she's saying but I understand what he's saying however she SOUNDED more convincing.
I mean, take your favorite song and pretend for argument's sake that it is in a foreign language. Now, I come in and dub the lyrics in English but I just speak them in sync to the music. No emotion in my voice, no interest, but perfectly in time. Wouldn't you still like the foreign version better? Or would you simply default to "Oh, I can understand this therefore I like it more."
And no, I'm not saying DragonBall Z has no emotion in English, etc. I'm simply trying to make a point that Japanese doesn't always equal bad simply because you're not fluent.
