The first Dragon Ball related DVD you owned?

Post by Kingdom Heartless » Mon Jan 12, 2009 6:22 am

Whether you bought it, it was given to you, or what.

Not for any real reason, just to take a trip down memory lane.

Mine was the Region 4 version of this-

I think that the saga was also my first exposure to the original Japanese version (although I had gotten a sample of the voices through playing Final Bout years before).

Being the hick I am, I didn't actually get any Dragon Ball DVDs until 2004, and I think it was only the second DVD I bought (after American Pie 2).

I no longer own the DVD, since I traded it in before getting the Madman set of Sagas 1-6.

It was probably around 2004. I just bought them because they looked cool. I still have 'em. :D

Funi's release of DBZ movie 13 didn't come out until 2006 though.

Oh..... well my guess was epically wrong. I just looked at the release date of the Buu DVD and assumed it was around then.

I hate to burst your bubble, but Movies 12 & 13 both came out in 2006.

As for my first Dbz dvd, I believe it was the Trunks tv special though before that I had the Pioneer VHS releases of the first three Dbz movies.

First 13 censored episodes of Dragonball.

I got these pieces of shit for Christmas 2003

ImageImageImage

I tought that Strongest Guy in the World was the first 6 episodes, since it has a screenshot from it as the cover, Super Battle in the World I thought was like 6 episodes WAAAAAAAAAAAY in the future of the series where two more Saiyans come to Earth, and then I though that Super Saiya Son Goku was when thGoku turns Super Saiyan.

When they arrived I noticed the "The Movie" on the top and was kinda disappointed, but hyped to see them since I hadn't seen a DBZ movie before. When I got to watching them on Christmas day my heart broke, the dub was so shitty, and I couldn't change to Japanese audio and subs too...

Right now they're just a collectors thing for me, It's another dub and it's pretty interesting, even if it's as bad as rape.

My first Funi DVD was the first Season set, I was so blown away, to see it, to own 39 episodes of DBZ! I listened to the dub and again it kinda disappointed me since they weren't the same voices from waaaay back, and decided to watch it in Japanese because... the dub was just so unwatchable...
So far all my Dragon Ball DVDs are fucking disappointing but I have an "I can take it" kind of attitude about it, Funimation can't get it right, ever, and AB Groupe were high or something.

He's talking about the US release as that is censored.

As for me my first DB related DVD was the TV Special Double Feature.

Pioneer Saiyan + Namek sets on the far left, along with the triple feature pack of the original Pioneer/FUNi releases of the first 3 DBZ films.

One of the Funi Perfect Cell DVDs that I bought to confirm that they did in fact have the Japanese version on them, because for some reason at the time I did not actually believe it. I started collecting the various saga boxsets after that.

I had pre-ordered the two Captain Ginyu discs from Right Stuf back for their October 2000 release. If I remember correctly, they started adjusting orders saying they wouldn't be available right away (I think due to the demand and inability to stock them). I canceled my order and headed out on the town on October 1st trying to find them. I managed to get the first disc at my local Suncoast, and I forget when about I managed to track down the second, but it wasn't all too long after.

On that note, was anyone actually so comitted that they picked up the DBZ singles as they were coming out?, I own them all, but I bought them in lots of 5 or 10 over the past couple of years.

Trunks: Mysterious Youth.

I didn't own a DVD player at the time, and actually took it with me to Kinko's (where I worked) to watch it. I remember at the time I was thrilled just because I had only seen those episodes in Real Media format with crappy AnimeLabs subtitles. I thought the video looked great.

Oh how the times have changed ;p

Nah, but then again, I don't do that with any TV series. I picked up one or two, but that's about it.

I didn't even buy any of my Z Box Sets brand new (movie sets excluded), I was lucky enough to find the ones I wanted at a pawnbroker and at Cash Converters. Most the ones in the Cash Converters were still sealed, aswell, so that was a pretty good score.

VHS - Lord Slug

DVD - I rented Movie 5, so I owned it for a period of time, and so wish I had bought it. I think the first DVD of Dragon Ball I owned was Pioneer's "Super Saiyan Goku" or "Goku - Super Saiyan?!". It had three pictures of Goku on the cover showing his aging through the series, and had three episodes on it, most of the Guldo fight and the first episode of Recoome's fight. Ocean dub cast.

Looking back, I don't know why I ever received this or if I even wanted it. I guess my parents were like "DRAGON BALL ON IT, DOESN'T MATTER LAWL" because these episodes suck if you don't have the previous and next sets. It's just "FREEZE TIME THINK OF A PLAN THESE KIDS BE STRONG" for 90 minutes.

Unless Gohan's speech to Recoome was on it. Then the DVD goes up in likeability slightly.

First orange brick. Or Dragon Ball Z Season One Remastered in High Definition and Digitally Restored.

I go for value, not quality when it comes to these things and 30 dollars on over 30 episodes is a good enough deal to me, all issues aside.

On the VHS front, I had DBZ Movie 5 before that. It was pretty dire.
