The dub is garbage.
The dub is worse than this movie could ever be.
And yet, look at what came from that.
This movie ? Seriously, nothing tangible came from the dub. But this trailer comes from the movie.

A trailer is supposed to show the audience what the movie will be like. If it's garbage, the audience is allowed to think the movie will be garbage as well, don't you think ?

A lot of fans became fans because of the dub.
If challenge had a taste, you'd be quite delicious.

A lot of people were driven away because of the awful over exaggerated dialouge and grunting of the dub aswell.

I realize the dub is overly cartoony but I thought it was funny.

I got into the anime through the dub. That introduced me to the japanese audio and the manga. So I owe it that. But I haven't watched the dub since 2003...because it sucks and it didn't take me long to realize that. The movie has a terrible trailer. That is my opinion. If a movie has a terrible trailer, does that make the movie terrible? No. But it certainly makes it all the more likely.

The amount of fans that got into the show and still watch the dub far outweigh the one's who didn't like it and were driven away.

I like the dub, but quantity =/= quality.

I know, me too. I said nothing tangible came from the dub.

This trailer is tangible, so is the movie it's taken from.

I, personnally, found this trailer awfully bad, so there is no way I can possibly imagine anything good (ie a good movie) coming from this.

Maybe some people who don't know anything about DB will like this movie, and become fans of the real Dragonball (even if I seriously doubt it), but it's not something tangible.

I disagree I also think it gave DBZ an awful reputation in America.
Whenever I bring it up I hear "Isn't that the show with the constipated guys yelling in each others faces?" A clear sign they have only watched the god awful dub. There is yelling in the Japanese version but the dub cranks it up to 11 and adds a pinch of low functioning autism.

In my personal experiences, comments like those are typically coming from the same people who would call you lame for watching a "cartoon".

No those same people admit to liking other anime (they only know the dub of those shows as well...I'm not even sure if they know what "anime" is.) Nonetheless...

I just had the opportunity to see the 'new' trailer, and my opinion hasn't changed. The movie looks generic in every way. "Dragonball: Evolution" is faithful to Dragonball in the same way that "Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li" is faithful to Street Fighter.

I find this movie infuriating on nearly every level. I guess I knew before I even entered the thread how things were most likely going to turn out.

No, the street fighter movie doesn't resemble street fighter at all. This at least contains the "bare minimum" as people on here have said, although I have no problem with it and see a lot of similarities.

Second, my only complaint with this new trailer is that the mafuba, or what ever Roshi is doing in that scene looks less intense.

I think sometimes people forget that "good" and "bad" are subjective concepts. What anime "is" to an individual, will differ from person to person. Just because somebody likes to watch dubs doesn't mean that they don't know what "anime" is. And I'm not just saying that because I prefer dubs.

Yeah, FUNimation left the story and majority of names intact, and fixed some in the uncut releases. That's really all I care about. I suppose inserted dub-only jokes and voice acting quality varies from person to person.

All in all, if you want a bad dub, go watch 4Kids' dub of Cardcaptor Sakura, or the Blue Dragon dub.

Huh? Oh, people can think the movie is garbage all they want. I'm just saying that it's possible for good things to come from insanely bad products. I don't think I once passed judgment on the film in that post. Rather, I used the dub as an example of garbage that had something good come from it. Since what is considered garbage is subjective, a few people skipped past the POINT and wanted to say the dub wasn't garbage. I suppose I should have used qualifying words, but ALL I WAS SAYING was that something good can come of it even if it is complete and other crap.

Also:

What do you mean nothing "tangible" came from the dub? What exactly is "tangible" about a movie? This isn't an insult, by the way...I'm genuinely confused. :?

Did they become fans because of the dub? Despite the dub? Did the dub have anything to do with it? That might a bit harder to determine.

Does that necessarily say something about the quality of the dub? A lot of people just don't like buying TV series on DVD or reading subtitles.

It's not so much that the quality of the dub was GOOD so much as something GOOD came from it. The fans wouldn't be fans without the dub's existence, even if you think it is(and if you do, well, I'd agree). Would something better have come from a good dub? Maybe. But whatever. Something good came from the dub, even if it's not AS good as a hypothetical situation with potential ramifications about which we can't possibly guess.

The SPIRIT may be way off. I don't know yet, I haven't decided what I think of that. But the Dragonballs look like Dragonballs, Goku's Gi is certainly similar, and we have a bald, green, demon king. As far as PURE AESTHETICS go, even if the film is WAY OFF, it has a few aspects that look like they are at least TRYING to look somewhat similar to the source material in some way. That is more than can ever be said about the Street Fighter movie.
