Nobody gives a shit. Selling, advertising, and providing information on how to obtain bootlegs are what's shunned here. Simply having them is a private matter of which there is no real consequence.
Some people do it. Nobody talks about it.

They are a waste of money if you have no knowledge of Japanese if you ask me. Sure they look pretty but come on, you can get a used car with that $3800.
Even if they had English subtitles I wouldn't spend 3,800 on a cartoon.
Oh I feel exactly the same way, but with all due respect to people who own the sets. I'm not saying what you should or should not buy, it is just wayyy too expensive for me to even consider purchasing, let alone finding ones for sale.

The Dragon Boxes are for the fans that really,
really love it. Not many take the plunge, but if you ever do you will not regret it, even if at first you think you have made a mistake, like I did!
If you have the funds and the opportunity is right, by all means take it! If you like it as a display piece or if you are crazy enough rip all the FUNI subs and add them to the DVDs (Like I am

), they are worth it.
Congrats to all who bought these sets, you will love them.

I'm getting portions of the series through sales and getting them second-hand. However, due to my current schedule keeping me away from home the majority of the time, I've decided that I'm not going to try really hard to collect the whole thing in DBox format right now since I would never get time to watch it all. So I'm just grabbing what I can get for cheap.

I'm replacing my season one and two sets with the Dbox singles, considering the reason I justified my purchase was that I was paying for the subtitles.
I'm waiting for a sale though, the Australian dollar sucks too hardcore at the moment.

Expensive? Well...
I paid 550$ for the first Z box (shipping included). It has 147 episodes on it, as well as the triple-length Bardock special.
550/150= 3.66...$ per episode. 3.66...*3 = 11$ per three episodes.
Now, how much did you all pay for your average FUNi single or the Bardock special? Doesn't seem that expensive now, does it? And the Dragonbox episodes are of higher quality than the FUNi stuff, too.

I know I ended up playing less than $0.51 per episode on my Season One set. I have never paid more than $25 for a Season Set, and I think the most I've paid was $23 or so. I include shipping in that, as well.

Yes, it is still very expensive considering you can get every single one of those 147 episodes plus 16 extra (for a total of 163 episodes across 5 "season" sets) as well as the Bardock AND Trunks special for about $145. That is less than 1/4th what you paid (if you calculate it episode for episode). Also, the TV specials are the length of 2 episodes, not 3.

Err, and what if you don't want to watch the series in DVNR'd to death, cropped "FUNi-Vision"?
Besides, Adamant makes a perfectly sound point. For those who have been fans for awhile (read: those who made FUNimation a viable company to begin with), $24.95 for 3 episodes wasn't unheard of. For nearly ten years, including the timeframe when the DragonBoxes originally came out, it was actually the norm. Besides, the Season Sets aren't just like your average budget re-release, they have some obvious problems that some people just aren't up for dealing with.

Fair enough, I'm not a huge fan of the Dragonball anime (that is to say literally the anime of Dragonball) so maybe I'm not the best judge. Frankly I don't watch half the season sets I buy but I feel I need to own them anyhow just because they are so cheap and good for filler reference and so fourth.

I picked up all of the singles over the past two years, I got the majority of them through this very forum, and got what I could new from Madman on sale.
Since the Season sets actually retail here for $60, I completed my collection cheaper than I would have if I bought them.

I WAS around when we would get $25 for 3 episodes, and that's why the only DBZ episodes I have on DVD are a couple of my favorite fights. Ever since I bought the Season Sets, I now have the first 219 episodes on DVD, and it only cost a combine total of $235 (I bought the majority of the Season Sets at Best Buy since they have them a week early)

I know, and that is why I only have 1 of the DVD singles. I thought that price was ridiculous for 3 - 4 episodes. That was in the past though, as no one sells anime for that much any more. Your point is therefore irrelevant. Also, I do not own any of the season set releases (Note: I did buy the DragonBox Movies set).
I was not making an argument for the season sets, I was only making an argument for the fact that the episodes are available for the standard (and below) price for anime these days, and paying 4 times that amount is ridiculous for the casual fan. I would personally pay more for a better product, of course, but a lot of people would not care to do the same.

Yes, but until recently they weren't. Had this been a year ago, would the Dragonbox price of 11$ (plus shipping) per 3 episodes have been "too much" then?
Plus, I'm from Norway, where 11$ (about 70kr) for 3 episodes of anything is cheap as piss.
I also have a ton of singles, I'll be selling off those that have the same material as the Dragonbox does, so I'm technically only paying for the material I DON'T have.

I'm technically just restating what I said a year ago now, but I'd like to buy those.

Yeah, I know. They're currently in Norway now, while I'm in the US, though, so it'll have to wait a couple months.

I'd still buy the Dragon Boxes when ever I could, they contain a few extras that probably won't come out in the US...

Death Note (Viz): 4-5 Episodes @ $24.98 MSRP/disc
Darker Than Black (FUNimation): 5 episodes @ $29.98 MSRP/disc
Lucky Star (Bandai): 4 episodes @ $29.98 MSRP/disc
Hm...that looks
kind of like the major anime companies, including FUNimation, are selling anime for that price still
Don't mistake the prices of re-releases (DragonBall Z, for instance) for being the norm. Stuff gets cheaper as it's re-released, but new releases are still roughly the same price as the old DBZ releases. It's just that most companies know how to work an encoder properly and their shows aren't ~300 episodes long, two things that made FUNimation's old DBZ discs very unappealing.

Oh, that one thing that kept me from buying the DVDs in the first place, right. $20 to $25 per 3 episodes.
