If you guys thought the three-volume books were huge 'n heavy, volume five is going to contain volumes 13-16.
Holy hell. This was expected given the number of DB books, but still. Damn.

It is pretty cool though to get all of Piccolo taking over the world, Goku vs. Piccolo, and the entire 23rd Tenkaichi Budoukai all in one volume.

I bet this is what'll happen with Kenshin when they reach the end of that series. (The only VizBigs that I'm buying as I have all the DB singles).
4 volumes though.....man its heavy just holding onto the 3 volume ones.

Well... Dragon Ball is from vol. 01 to 16, VizBig got three volume per one, that's (1-2-3) (4-5-6) (7-8-9) (10-11-12) (13-14-15) and that's leave 16 alone
*sigh* they should've used the Kanzenban... vol. 13 ended with the end of the 23rd Tenkaichi Budokai and vol. 14 started the same as DBZ vol. 1

Bah! After holding the Amazing Spider-Man Omnibus, all books are lightweight in comparison.
Still hate the fact that Viz delayed DB Volume 3 until next month.

This is actually quite surprising. I was fully expecting VIZ to milk this release for all its worth and put out a volume 5 and 6 with 2 volumes each.
Now I'm left wondering if they'll continue this style and release 2 four in ones for the end of Z. If so, then we'll actually benefit from the splitting up of DB and DBZ this time and get the whole series in 13 instead of 14 volumes, which the original 42 volumes would have fit perfectly into. However, this is assuming that these four in ones have the same $17.99 price tag.

I'm holding out on buying these at the moment. But it's good to know for future reference.
I've taken a gander at the VizBigs at the bookstore, but obviously I've never bought any. To those who have purchased them so far, how well are they holding up? Are pages falling out or anything like that? I already know about editing and color page issues, so you don't need to explain that. Just the general quality of the book in terms of holding itself together and how easy or difficult it is to hold and read.

Mine are in great shape and have held out after reading them a few times.
To be truthful, they aren't all that cumbersome when it comes to reading them. The only difficulty I encountered is when I'm in the middle of the thing and lose my spot because I fumbled the book slightly.
All in all, they're very well put together books. If they weren't edited and had all the color pages, they would be my preferred way of the reading the manga in english.
EDIT: Might I add that they look pretty spiffy on a shelf, even if they don't have the original spine images.

I don't think Viz changes the price on newer installments, regardless of size differences from past ones.
DB Volume 17 (DBZ Vol. 1 in Viz standards) is relatively short, while 42 (DBZ 26) is huge. Both cost the same as any ordinary volume.

Yeah, Ranma 1/2 volume 1 is the same price as the others in that series, but it is twice as long.

I pretty much knew they would do this, since like someone previously posted, there are 16 volumes and vizBig states, "three in one volume". I haven't collected much Dragon Ball manga volumes so this works for me, already preordered volume 5, so I'm done with vizBig

. Although Viz having the next volume (3) clearly saying that it will be released on December 2008, on the last page of volume 2, makes me a bit irritated. March is going to be a packed month, since volume 3 comes out on the 3rd and the 4th comes out on the 17th. Volume 5 is going to be heavy, but I think I should manage hahaha.

I like these books. I bought them to read, and not to particularly look "nice" on a shelf. I've left them sitting around on the floor or tossed them around.
Basically, they work very well for this purpose. They hold up nicely, they're sturdy, and I'm happy with 'em. The paper is a nice-quality and I don't see any issues with the binding.

. Because I already bought it twice. first time Gollancs+Viz tankobons to read, and the second time Chinese kanzenbans for scans and colored pages. So, why would I buy it the third time? My manga shelfs need some space for other mangas you know.

Good to know! I recently started reading my VizBigs and wasn't looking forward to a long wait for the conclusion of DB. What's the date on this, May?
Having read DB vol 1, I can attest that they hold up alright. It's a little awkward reading it for the first few chapters, but once you get the spine nice and flexible it's not bad. I still have to rest it on a table or my lap due to the weight and my little-girl-wrists. Sigh.

So I gotta ask was there anything censorable or that got censored in these volumes or like any of the post RRA arcs?
Be grateful the filler in Dragon Ball doesn't suck like the 3rd arc of Rurouni Kenshin.

As far as I remember there's nothing to censor. No guys with guns killing old people or nudity from Piccolo onward.
