Blue Dragon manga drawn by/based on Akira Toriyama!

Post by nikko » Wed Feb 11, 2009 10:58 pm

Out of pure boredom, I bought January's V-Jump (actually last time I got one was back in 2005) and I was shocked to find that it includes a Blue Dragon manga that has nothing to do with Takeshi Obata's (finished) Blue Dragon Ral Grad or Ami Shibata's (canceled) Blue Dragon ST, the only BD manga that are known in the internet-world as far as I consider.

It is absolutely loyal to Akira Toriyama's art style and I have no clue if it is actually drawn by the aforesaid! I also don't know if it follows the anime or the game but I don't care much about this.

Anyhow, I have scanned some pages to give you an idea of what I am talking about.

*replaced, read below*

EDIT:

I am amazed by the fact that this magazine keeps surprising me!
In the following archive I included the whole chapter as well as some bonuses:

Some brand new art by Akira Toriyama for the new arcade Dragon Quest game as well as a lovely poster, in addition to a bizarre advertisement manga presented by a parody of team Gyunyu.

Anyway the main thing to resolve is what is written in bd00.jpg because it mentions "Toriyama Akira sensei" and it regards the Blue Dragon manga!

I have the feeling/hope that this is something big... or at least very interesting to the community... :)

If you scan maybe the first or third page (the one with the credits,) one of us could tell you. I remember seeing this issue of V-Jump with Blue Dragon on the cover, but I didn't investigate why.

I don't think that's Mr. Toriyama's work, and I know this is a weird reason as to why, but he doesn't use screentones (he even did an author's note about it in Dr. Slump at one point); or when he does use them they're to a very small degree.

Plus the style seems a little too smooth.
On hiatus.

Hm, it would be cool if Mr Toriyama had drawn this. I'm not sure though, it looks like it could just be someone using his style somehow.

Edit: Chuquita sort of put into words what I couldn't.

Strangely enough, I am unable to find any credits, therefore I will scan all the pages and edit my first post with them. There are only some side-notes that do not seem to mention any manga-ka...

Do you know if the manga was drawn post or pre Blue Dragon anime?
The Saiyans are very much like the Klingons and Jem'Hadar.

Probably post. Off the top of my head I only remember there being that manga by the Death Note author by the time the anime came out.

I am scanning the whole manga (20 pages or so), stay tuned.

Before I continue scanning... I found this in the second page of the magazine:

It does say something about Akira Toriyama indicating page 215 where the manga begins!!

The artist mostly likely took the basic design from certain scenes and carried them over to the page.

Is that what it says? With my basic knowledge, I can read:

Kongou no V Jump ni wa Toriyama Akira sensei kyarakunuugataku san tou shyu!

No, I am just guessing unless the artist has a knack for emulating Toriyama’s designs for the anime.

OMG I love Mr. Toriyama's Photoshop work! Seriously, he's got some amazing skills when it comes to coloring things in on whatever program he uses. X3

I can safely say those Dragon Quest kids are drawn by him.

Also, the boy with the sword has this "confident Gohan" vibe coming from him.

Is that Crono and the gang I spy? What does this mean, a preview of the DS game or some sortof manga?
For all the flack that FUNimation gets on this forum for their quote about DBZ, there's some modicum of truth to it: a 9-year-old is born every day. Or in some cases, "reborn". DBZ may be a kids' show, but it's been so close to so many hearts all over Japan, America, and quite possibly, even the world.
Unfortunately nothing special, just a guide for the DS port. No new art there either.

EDIT: OMG-OMG!! THIS ISSUE IS MAGIC!! MORE TO COME!! STAY TUNED!!

Oh that game looks awesome! X3 Thank you!

Looks like its arcade-only though. :(
If they ever port it to an home system I'd like to play it.

I started playing that game last night, actually.

So far it hasn't drawn me in much, but I'm happy they had a Japanese voice option.
