Redubbing = Bad(?)
In episode #162 of the podcast, VegettoEX talks about how some fans of the dub wouldn't like the redubs that took place in the season 1 and 2 box sets. This had never occurred to me as something that could ever be considered a bad thing. I had always thought that the beginning of Dragon Ball Z had a horrible dub and I've found that most people agree.
So, I wonder. Is there anybody here who does (or knows someone who does) not like that Funimation redubbed the first two "seasons?"

I don't see what there could be to dislike for fans of the original edited dub, since FUNi was so lazy with the redub of the first 67 episodes that a good majority of the Ocean dub lines were recycled anyway. They only fixed major errors, threw in a few more references to death, and called it a day.
I mean, c'mon, we've still got the "Have you seen my arm?! You can't miss it" crap from Raditz. FUNi changed next to nothing.
I definitely AM pissed at the redubs, yes, but not because they were redubbed in general. But then again, I hold no affection for the old edited dub, so I might be in a minority here...

Wait, so why are you pissed at the redubs? I hold no affection to the original dub either so I don't understand where you're coming from.MagicBox wrote:I definitely AM pissed at the redubs, yes, but not because they were redubbed in general. Sorry for not making it clearer in my original post.Innagadadavida wrote:Wait, so why are you pissed at the redubs? You were asking if people were pissed at the redubs because they were redubbed in general. I said no, but stated that I am pissed at them for a different reason. That reason being that FUNimation was lazy and didn't give us a legit redub. All they did was recycle the exact same scripts from the edited dub and fix some of the major mistakes.
I think it was a wasted opportunity.

Gohan was redubbed.Chuquita wrote:The only thing I didn't like about it is the "half-baked" job they did on Season 3.
If you're redubbing, you either go all out or you don't bother to do it at all.
I can't stand that we're able to get a redubbed Season 3 Vegeta and Kuririn, but not Goku and Gohan (among others). >_O

Really?
Still, it wouldn't have killed Mr. Schemmel to re-record his lines and send them down to Texas somehow.
4Kids just ate him, didn't they?
On hiatus.

I think the redubs mostly sound better on season 1. It's still not nearly as good as the Japanese script, and it really baffles me that they would bother to redub the season and only fix specific things, rather than the entire season, but...
"ALRIGHT I'm back in the saddle! And this three eyed cowboy is goin for ONE LAST RIDE!"
I mean at least we don't have that anymore... It was really hard to take the Saiyan Saga seriously with lines like that everywhere. I can even put up with the "Have you seen my arm?!" line from Raditz, because that's not as bad as some of the horrible dialogue they had in the original dub..
The Freeza saga they really needed to do a better job on though. It doesn't sound to me like they redubbed Freeza or Goku's lines at all during their 20 episode long fight. And given how drastically off the dubbing is from the original script in that area of the show, it really pains me that I bought a "REMASTERED AND REDUBBED" edition of the show, only to get the same script and a cropped screen.. Ugh...

As horrible as the season 3 dub is, taking Vegeta's death scene as an example, I actually prefer the original over the re-dub, because although it sounds terrible, at least Sabat actually stayed in-character, whilst in the re-dub he was constantly switching between his natural voice, and his Vegeta.
So yeah, I have mixed feelings about the re-dubs, while they're a little better, they're still really half-assed (recycled scripts ,sub-par acting) when compared to what FUNimation were putting out for other properties at the time.

This. 20x Kaioken THIS. Linda Young's early Freeza is just fucking terrible, and it's sad she didn't get settled into the role until the video games started popping around evrywhere. And even then, she had a couple of "ugh" moments in Burst Limit. Or maybe she seemed worse than usual when compared to Schemmel's performance in BL.ImmortalSandwich wrote:The Freeza saga they really needed to do a better job on though. Also, am I the only one who didn't have a problem with Raditz's dub lines? Okay, it's different. It's not in the original. At the very least, the dub-sarcasm adds a bit more to his character, which was the lame "i em evololololz." I'm not saying the dub makes him likeable(it does not, fuck Raditz), but that he feels slightly less one-dimensional.

I really do hope Funimation dubs the upcoming HD series with a clean slate. I blame the majority of the UUE's redub being bad on Funimation recycling their old Saban scripts. With the new release, we can at least hope that Funimation's going to write new scripts from the get-go with no previous English scripts to borrow from.
If it's anything like the Buu saga dub, I'd buy it. Don't think we need to worry about Funi adding in-house music anymore.

Is there any particular reason why you can't enjoy both?KillerCory wrote:Switch to Japanese you will never have these problems again.
I did a year ago and haven't looked back.
I like the dub not only for nostalgia, but because I'm fascinated with the process of dubbing and the industry behind it. Maybe even to the point of pursuing a career in that field.
But I've also watched a good portion of Z in Japanese (not Dragon Ball because I don't have those DVDs). And I like it that way as well.

There's no reason to "switch and never look back", that's just being closed minded. English is my native language, and I saw the show in English first, therefor, I watch it in English 9 times out of 10. I do like to watch it in Japanese from time to time. I enjoy the script much more in Japanese and the music gives it a completely different feel than the American track, so it's cool to see Dragon Ball in two different lights. But I'm still a dub fan. Always will be.

I dunno. Saying that because you speak English you should watch it in English is the pretty close-minded statement, I'd say.ImmortalSandwich wrote:There's no reason to "switch and never look back", that's just being closed minded. At least until April 5th when the Japanese cast re-dubs the showKillerCory wrote:Switch to Japanese you will never have these problems again.

How so? And why is it an "act"? What's the proper reaction to have? Are you only allowed to like it, only allowed to tolerate it, or only allowed to be ambivalent about it? Why are no truly visceral reactions allowed?Zenkai Power wrote:It's just stupid to act like the dub is really THAT bad.

Like I said, I also enjoy the show in Japanese, but I prefer to watch it in a language that I don't need subtitles in, since subs distract from what's going on in a scene. Instead of watching it and enjoying the artwork and whatnot, I'm reading subtitles. I can deal with it okay, but prefer not to if I don't have to.
