I wonder if this offended Akira Toriyama?
I wonder if this offended Akira Toriyama?
From the review for Dragon Ball episode 9 at Rachel's page...
Toninjinka's name was changed to "Boss Rabbit." But, to be fair, he didn't retain his name in the Japanese version, either. He's instead called "Ninjinka" throughout the episode, as opposed to "Toninjinka," which was used in the manga, and appears in every other Japanese source.
Toei just ignored Toriyama's name and used their own, then everyone else used that name instead of the original author's. I would have been very angry and offended if I was Toriyama. I wonder if they showed such disrespect because this was back in the early days of Dragon Ball, and neither the series nor the author himself were as popular as they would one day become.

I guess Toriyama's a lot more easygoing than I am, then. I'd have told them to insert a few scenes in episode 10 along these lines.
Bulma: By the way, Goku, thanks for saving me from Toninjinka.
Goku: No problem. He was a scary guy, Toninjinka.
Oolong: Yeah. I'm glad we saved that town from Toninjinka, otherwise Toninjinka's gang would have always kept the people in fear of Toninjinka.
Bulma: We've done a good thing, haven't we? Saving those guys from the terror of Toninjinka.
Oolong: Let's stop talking about Toninjinka. Toninjinka gave me the creeps.
Yamcha: Hey guys, s'up? How's Toninjinka doing?
Goku: Toninjinka's in bad shape. Thanks for helping us defeat Toninjinka, Yamcha. You're not so bad after all.
Yamcha: I didn't do it for you guys. I just can't stand people like Toninjinka.
Puar: *shudders* I hate Toninjinka.
Oolong: I'm with you there. Toninjinka is even worse than Gyuumao.
Bulma: I hope we never meet someone like Toninjinka ever again...
Manga authors can get anime adaptations based upon their work cancelled at any time, right? You own a copyright to something, you have the right to retract the privilege to let people use your work. If I was Toriyama, I'd have been exercising that right.

Over the name of 1 minor character? Seems a bit dramatic.Dr. Casey wrote:Manga authors can get anime adaptations based upon their work cancelled at any time, right? And I'm certain they don't have NEARLY that much control.
I'm no lawyer, nad even if I was I wouldn't be a Japanese lawyer with manga copyright law as my specialty. But I'm almost certain the contract to sign away the rights to their show at least allows them a certain amount of time to do whatever the hell they want with your property. Considering how long Toei's been doing Dragon Ball stuff, I think they have pretty solid ownership of Dragon Ball on TV.
Anyone who might actually KNOW this stuff want to correct me, or lay down some specifics?

Yeah, I'd say they probably have more control over the franchise than Toriyama.

Well, since Toriyama forgot that he'd already named Pilaf's ninja-dog "Soba" and told Toei to call him "Shu", I wouldn't be surprised if the same thing happened here, since he's even more minor than Soba.
Toriyama really, really doesn't care.

Toriyama can't even keep names straight in his own fucking comic book. He went a whole chapter calling White "Silver".The Tori-bot wrote:Well, since Toriyama forgot that he'd already named Pilaf's ninja-dog "Soba" and told Toei to call him "Shu", I wouldn't be surprised if the same thing happened here, since he's even more minor than Soba.

Woah dude, no need to get mad at Toriyama here....can you imagine how hard it must've been to create the Dragon Ball manga?NeptuneKai wrote:Toriyama can't even keep names straight in his own fucking comic book. Uh, I don't think anyone's "mad". I saw that as nothing more than a legitimate comparison and justification to what was being stated about the anime.ShinRogafuken wrote:Woah dude, no need to get mad at Toriyama here....can you imagine how hard it must've been to create the Dragon Ball manga?NeptuneKai wrote:Toriyama can't even keep names straight in his own fucking comic book. Yeah I was just poking fun at him a little. If I didn't respect him or his work I probably wouldn't have 2,000 something odd posts discussing his creation.VegettoEX wrote:Uh, I don't think anyone's "mad". I'd bet serious money on that. If he can't remember Tao Pi Pi there is no way in hell he's remembering that character.B wrote:Something tells me if you mentioned Toninjinka to Toriyama, he wouldn't even know what you were talking about.

I remember reading somewhere that he couldn't remember who Kame-Sen'nin was.
I'm not sure whether to laugh or cry.

You'll probably thinking of the Oda/Toriyama interview, where he couldn't remember who Tao Pai Pai was.The Tori-bot wrote:I remember reading somewhere that he couldn't remember who Kame-Sen'nin was.
