Episode #0166 (

rss feed)
63:22; 64 kbps, mono; 29.0 MB
Episode #0166! VegettoEX, Meri, Julian and Jeff go through volume 25 in our "Manga Review of Awesomeness". This one seemed like an awkward volume to go through, as the action just doesn't stop and Goku is incapacitated right after (finally) arriving back on the scene. Does this hurt the volume's enjoyment, though? DBZ ABCs, Meri's Top 5, March's releases, the obligatory "DragonBall Kai" news, and your e-mails round out the episode. Referenced sites:
Go ahead and grab it. Big thanks to
godofchaos for hosting the rather sweet *one-hundred-sixty-six* episodes, now.
It's going up a little later than I normally would, but you can just blame
Street Fighter IV for that.
w0rd.

Awesome, now listening. 'Awkward volume' eh? I'll be interested in seeing how this plays out (I keep meaning to reread the volume before hand, but alas there's always next month).

Looks great! It's too bad we'll have to wait another week to hear your analysis of the DB Kai promo. Hopefully there'll be another one out by than.
By the way, the image you used for King Cold in Meri's most recent Top 5 List isn't linked or uploaded quite right.

I was still working on the images when I posted this up

. They've been going up on the page one by one as I finished them. All done. Heh.

Aw no picture of Julian's breakfast? Ah well.
Freeza's mom's name would totally be Icebox.

Great episode! I'm looking forward to the next manga review already.
By the way, I always thought that Dende's healing powers came out when Saichoro released his hidden powers. Looking back at the manga now nothing like that is mentioned though, so maybe it's a bit of an assumption.
Edit: Oh, and Toriyama isn't alone in the half-couple thing. Name 5 Disney characters who have 2 living parents. It's probably doable, but tough.
Edit Edit: About the rumor of Dragon Ball ending with the Freeza saga -- at the end of the Dragon Ball portion of the manga didn't Toriyama write something like, 'Dragon Ball will continue, but just for a bit longer'? And as you said, everything leading up to Freeza seemed very planned out. Maybe that's why people assume that the end of the Freeza saga was supposed to be the end?

I'm so excited to hear the upcoming review of Ryo Horikawa's voice acting cd simply because he's one of my favorite seiyuu. X3
Also I completely forgot he even made one.

On hiatus.

Regarding Dende (from the Daizenshuu):
Kanzentai wrote:The Dragon Clan prodigy Dende has the ability to restore people who have succumbed to injuries. This naturally includes recovering their strength and completely healing their injuries. In short, Dende's ability is to restore them back to health.
http://www.kanzentai.com/daiz04.php?id=race
So in short, he's just special.

Yeah. I think it's something to do with him being Dragon Clan, but is also a somewhat unique ability to him (although we see Kibito use something similar later too).
I still assume that Saichoro releasing his hidden power in the previous volume of the manga had something to do with him being able to use these gifts though, or at least making them strong enough to be useful. I don't know if I'm just assuming this or if Saichoro said something of the sort in some kind of filler or dub line though.

No mention of Dragonball Evolution coming out in Japan on the 13th of this month? Seems like a pretty major thing to gloss over especially since you guys know people who will be able to give first impressions and all.

Honestly? The whole damn movie just keeps slipping my mind.
And clearly no-one else on the show remembers, either. Including Julian. Who's going to see it this month.

Finally listened to the end of the podcast.
What, no picture of Julian?

Well, I'm far off from getting to this volume in my Viz review thread, but I've already taken notes for it (I'm kinda switching to going through the entire manga and taking notes and then going back and writing things up officially), but here are the highlights for volume 25/DBZ 9.
The original name for the small race that Gohan and Kuririn's armor was made for is Ritto-seijin, the people of the Planet Litt, presumably a pun on "little". Viz probably changed it because it's too obvious a pun for an English-speaking audience.
The original name for the region of Planet Namek that Dende mentions is the Maima Region, a pun on maimai, another Japanese word for "snail".
When Vegeta's sleeping, Gohan says that Vegeta said he hadn't slept at all since he'd came to Namek. In Viz he just says that he said he hadn't slept for a really long time.
Oh, and the word Freeza uses for his parent(s) is 親/oya, which can be either singular or plural (unlike 両親/ryoushin, meaning both parents). So Freeza's race could very well reproduce asexually, and Cold could be the only parent Freeza has.

Aw, also sad to hear that you guys didn't mention the release of the Kanzenban this month on the 18th in the Netherlands (and France will have it too this month, not too sure on the specific date though).
There was a topic about it in the General Discussion forum.

Good episode, volume nine was the first DBZ manga, maybe my first purchased manga ever, so it has a soft spot for me.
You guys had some great points, especially Jeff with the whole Freeza had to transform. I couldn't agree more, it's like what Gohan says "If we fight together...Maybe we could do it...He's awesome but our strength has increased..."
Gohan: "You're a Buddhist." Kuririn: "A hungry Buddhist!"

I was so happy to see the return of Meri's Top 5, since there wasn't a single one between when I started listening to the podcast and this one! It was really fun!

Have you gone back to hear the older episodes? I always revisit the older podcasts while doing homework, grinding in a game, or whatever.

Nah, but I've seen them on the page. Top 5 Naked Moments..... classic.
The only old episode I've listened to was the April Fool's one.

Nice, I extremely recommend episode #52. It's their one year anniversary of the podcast and their special guest was
Steven J. Simmons. This is a must.
