The Armbands In Trunks' Farewell
Something that I've always wondered...when Trunks is about to return to his own time after the Cell Games, Bulma and the others that were there to see Trunks leave (except Vegeta) are wearing black armbands. Why is this?
Maybe I'm missing something in this, and it's some kind of common tradition that people do when they are saying their farewells to friends or it's a sign of respect. Or is this part of Japanese culture?
Does anyone know what this means?

Heh. Didn't realize they had a funeral for Goku. I mean, in DBZ, they never really had a funeral for anyone else, did they? But I guess it fits, seeing as Gohan was wearing a black suit and all.Pain wrote:It was for Son Goku's funeral.

Well, in most of those cases they were planning on wishing them back, so why bother? Goku was actually planning to STAY dead, so a funeral seemed in order.Piccolo Daimao wrote:I mean, in DBZ, they never really had a funeral for anyone else, did they?

Yeah, I guess. Funny how that was the only funeral in all of Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z, even though we never saw it. But since Goku wasn't coming back, I can understand it.SSj Kaboom wrote:Well, in most of those cases they were planning on wishing them back, so why bother? They don't actually mention having a funeral for Goku, at least not in the manga (anywhere I kind find). So the armbands and black clothing might just be a sign of mourning for Goku.

I wonder what they would put in the coffin. Mabye Kaio-sama could have sent some Goku-dust down?

Imagine all the Z gang squashed into a little church and mourning for Goku, It would be quite a comical thing to see. Vegeta would be snarling, Bulma and Chichi distraugt, (Sorry I'm hopeless at spelling.) Roshi likely perving up a sobbing Chichi.... With Gohan reading out one of his many heroic stories of his father.
It would likely end with Goku saying something from above, Interupting his own funeral. (Oh and a very big buffet for the Saiyan's.)
Oh course... I would still need a tissue though, It would be like seeing Vegeta die by Freeza all over again!

"Ok, use your instincts Kakarott. Right or Left? (Hmmm... I'd have to say... left.) Good. Then I'm going right!" (Vegeta to Goku as they try to find their way to free the others inside Buu - Episode: The Innards of Buu)

"In some cultures the wearing of a black armband signifies that the wearer is in mourning or wishes to identify with the commemoration of a comrade or team member who has died. This use is particularly common when a group or team meets after having lost a member. In the movie It's a Wonderful Life, George Bailey is seen wearing a black armband in several scenes after the death of his father. Black armbands are referenced in Tom Lehrer's song, We Will All Go Together When We Go, and in the Guns N' Roses song Civil War." (Wikipedia)
Edit: I don't think it's specifically a Japanese thing. In fact, I would have said it wasn't. But I'm not sure which cultures it's common in actually.

Since Shen Long had been killed they might have, but I think everyone was too busy worrying about Daimao to waste time for funerals.DBHighDefinition wrote:Did they have a funeral for the people Daimao killed? Like Krillin, Roshi, etc...

SHUT UP, you dirty optimist bastard, and take your positive view of life and.... and..... just shove it.

Dragonball was my first time seeing the practice used outside of North America, actually (my first being for Superman in the "Funeral For A Friend" arc after Doomsday killed him.Bussani wrote:"In some cultures the wearing of a black armband signifies that the wearer is in mourning or wishes to identify with the commemoration of a comrade or team member who has died. Don't know if it was filler or not, but the Kame House gang had a moment of silence thing for Roshi, Kuririn, and Chaiotzu. They were in freeze pods so their bodies don't decay for a whole year before they can be wished back.DBHighDefinition wrote:Did they have a funeral for the people Daimao killed? Now that I think about it, were freeze pods needed? I suppose they were, since after this ponit, most people die by being disintegrated, and if their bodies were intact, like Vegeta on Namek, they weren't dead for very long to decay.

That's a very good observation and I'm sad Shenlong didn't get a moment of silence.B wrote:Don't know if it was filler or not, but the Kame House gang had a moment of silence thing for Roshi, Kuririn, and Chaiotzu. That's always how I pictured it was like. No ACTUAL funeral. Like not having a funeral is a sign of respect for Goku's constant fun-loving nature.
I guess you can call me the Mecha fan who loves Dragon Ball!
