So, I was listening to the podcasts, and it kinda surprises me how much cropping is still an issue on this show. It kinda got me to thinking that I'd better do some clearing up.

See, I may have jumped the gun in assuming that there was going to be absolutely no cropping going on . Because quite frankly at this point, I'm not so sure myself anymore. That's what I get for assuming, and you know what they say about that. (Although in this case, the only "ass" in ass-ume would be me...)

It was not my intention to mislead....simply an error on my part, but I'm pretty sure I have a good explanation somewhere.

See, here's what I know for certain...when we were re-drawing the animation scenes for DB-Kai, whatever was dead-center in the old scenes was still dead center in the new, re-drawn scenes. In order to fit the new frame sizes being used, some extra bits of art had to be added to both the animated elements and background art so that there would not be any obvious blank spots in the areas where the original versions of the scene were cut off (around the edges). In other words, when the work was handed over to us, it was not "pre-cropped".

What I should have realized was that this did NOT exclude the possibility of the scenes possibly being cropped in post-production.Therefore it was presumptious of me to assume that the final product may not be cropped, because I have not yet actually seen the final product myself. All I know is that at the part of the production where I am involved, it certainly was not cropped.

So, basically, I'm just as uncertain as anybody as to whether ANY of the final footage will be cropped in any way. But because of the way the scenes were re-drawn, if the editors decide to re-position the scenes in any way, there won't be any blank spots around the edges.

Only time will tell whether or not there will be any kind of cropping going. But one thing is certain...
Those guys that on that "We Remember Love" blog got my name wrong.

"Joey Hernandez"? Where'd that come from?

I hope since Yamamoto is doing the BGM that it sounds Super Butoden and Battle Power Infinity-esque. Just a thought. I always found his music to be so different from the Kikuchi music but it had great integrity to it. And many of Yamamoto's tracks are considered great across the board by any DB fan anyway. So it's a good choice even though I wish the Kikuchi music was still there. I'll still wait to say my final thought.
Be grateful the filler in Dragon Ball doesn't suck like the 3rd arc of Rurouni Kenshin.

You're the guy in the video clip?
Do you have an overview of which scenes the company you work at have redrawn?

I have a question; what station did the commercial for Kai appear on? Was it HDTV channel? I know it's already been said that Toei's ads aren't always representative of the final product, but if the ad was in the middle of a bunch of widescreen shows it might have been cropped just to fit in.

But meh, no way of knowing that's going on at this point.

The only person featured in the video was ghostlightning, the owner of the blog. He was drawing in Joey Hernandez's (if that's the name) work station.

Really looking forward to Dragon Ball Kai. Like everyone else here (probably), Dragon Ball is what turned me on to anime and manga over a decade ago. Now that I speak Japanese it'll be fun to watch the series as it airs in Japan and be able to understand and enjoy it each week. I'm really excited for that above all else.

I was the guy near the end of the video off-camera, taking about "Cross Epoch". (Not the guy at the beginning of the video harassing ghostlightning!) And yes, that was my work station ghostlightning was drawing on.
Guess I'll be taking "Joey Hernandez" as an alias now...

Let me see...I don't have a list handy, but so far we've re-drawn scenes from the Bardock special where Bardock faces Frieza just before Planet Vegeta explodes...baby Goku/Kakarrot landing on Earth...some scenes from Dragonball, like young Goku swinging through the trees...Goku's fight with Piccolo at the Tenkaichi Budokai...Raditz' appearance before Farmer with a Shotgun and Piccolo...and that was just episode 1.
We also did some fight scenes involving Raditz, Piccolo and Goku, up until Raditz and Goku get killed by Piccolo's Makanko-Sappo...Raditz and Goku's dying words...the Nappa and Vegeta cameo...and little Gohan being tossed at that plateau by Piccolo (which Gohan blasts to bits). Oh, and Gohan aping-out. So those are scenes from eps. 3,4, and maybe 5 and 6.

Wow. If all of that is just episode 1 then the Raditz fight must be greatly shortened. Sounds good!

It's not a given that just this studio works on episode 1, plus, it's also not a given thing that nothing gets cropped.

I know, but if all of that is in episode 1 and Raditz is supposed to die in episode 3 then...that is moving quick, you know? I realize the DB scenes will probably only be brief recaps, but still.

Well, episode one of the original series begins with Farmer with a shotgun and ends with Raditz meeting Piccolo. So basically they replaced Goku looking for Gohan in the woods with a recap of Dragon Ball.

I'm close to the same wavelength as you except I think there might be a Superman Returns sort of approach to the music. Regardless of what you think of that movie (it was bad...) the score was really good. They got in a guy named John Ottman to do the score, and he wrote plenty of new tracks, but a good amount of the tracks were either based on the old score from the earlier movies, or were lifted directly from it (the Main Superman Theme for example)
I'd REALLY like to see Yamamoto do something like that, where he mixes his new score with plenty of old favorite tunes

Good point. I forgot episode 1 had so much filler to begin with.

You know, after going through a few videos of Budokai in Japanese, I really wouldn't mind if DB Kai sounded like this at all (same composer):

Wow!! Nice Find Tsu!!
That music is actually really good!! also, I love how that game presents the levels as though they are episodes!! when the Announcer said "Watch it!! Gohan's Latent Power!" like it was an episode title, and having it end with the good old naration from Son going "Yo! It's me Goku!" and ending with "Next time on Dragon Ball Z: Now off to Namek! Guys, wait for me" it just made me happy! I don't remember if the English version did that or not...
But thinking about that, we could be taking this as a bit of a... well, not a preview of what's to come since this score might use different tracks, but at least a very good indicator of this guy's style being put into place in an Episode-like situation.
