Perhaps Goku cut his leg or something while he was in the pod. The tiger comes along, laps up the dried blood and now has Saiyan bood in him, meaning he can turn SSj!

I prefer my idea, because it fits along the timeline of AF, which I know is true because my friend's cousin's mailman lived in the same area as Toriyama and he told me so.

After his many adventures in space (which are not shown but are alluded to later on hinting that it must involve an ancient evil and a ham sandwich), the tiger ends up in a black hole, which sucks him back in time to the original Dragon Ball dimension, where he encounters the fight between Ginyu and Son Goku. Ginyu accidentally swaps bodies with the tiger, and the tiger-in-Ginyu's-body falls off a cliff for no apparent reason. The Ginyu-tiger gets his ass handed to him on a silver plate by Goku, until his rage builds him up to Super Saiyan. Z from Neko Majin Z makes an appearance and defeats the SSJ Ginyu-tiger. The vengeful tiger uses his final breaths to somehow summon the evil time-warping Shenron and wishes that the dragon would collide the DB dimension with the real world and preordain the tiger's meeting with the spacepod. Thus, the whole thing happens all over again...
